[Mollusca contagiosa in an infant with atopic eczema. A therapeutic challenge].

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral disease frequently observed in children and adolescents with atopic dermatitis, in whom it poses a special therapeutic challenge. A 3-year-old girl presented with atopic eczema and disseminated molluscum contagiosum on her buttocks and upper legs. Topical application of 0.05% tretinoin resulted in a steady regression of the lesions. Other therapeutic options include topical anti-viral agents, cryosurgery, laser treatment, and curettage. Further, the therapeutic outcome is highly dependent on an adequate therapy of the concomitant atopic eczema.

Finite element analysis of individual taenioglossan radular teeth (Mollusca).

Molluscs are a highly successful group of invertebrates characterised by a specialised feeding organ called the radula. The diversity of this structure is associated with distinct feeding strategies and ecological niches. However, the precise function of the radula (each tooth type and their arrangement) remains poorly understood. Here for the first time, we use a quantitative approach, Finite-Element-Analysis (FEA), to test hypotheses regarding the function of particular taenioglossan tooth types. Taenioglossan radulae are of special interest, because they are comprised of multiple teeth that

Increased expression of human beta-defensin 3 in mollusca contagiosum.

The human beta defensins (hBDs)-2 and -3 are inducible antimicrobial peptides present in human skin. Besides an important role in fighting bacteria, they also have an antiviral function. Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a cutaneous viral disease caused by the MC virus. Lesions show a tendency towards spontaneous regression, which might be caused by antiviral proteins such as defensins. We report a marked increase in hBD-3 immunoreactivity in MC lesions in contrast to hBD-2, which was only marginally increased. We suggest a role for the hBD-3 peptide in MC pathogenesis.

[Mollusca contagiosa in HIV-infected children receiving optimal antiretroviral therapy].

Two children with symptomatic HIV-infection suffered from extended mollusca contagiosa. Intensified antiretroviral therapy including a protease inhibitor, resulted in a decrease of HIV RNA plasma concentration and a dramatic increase of CD4 T cells. Mollusca contagiosa nearly completely disappeared. These cases demonstrated that newly generated CD4 T cells during sufficient antiretroviral treatment have functional abilities. Therefore, sufficient antiretroviral treatment should be offered to HIV infected children with extended mollusca contagiosa before surgical intervention is considered.

Functional morphology of the glandular esophageal pouches of chitons (Mollusca, Polyplacophora).

The esophageal pouches of Chaetopleura angulata and Acanthochitona fascicularis were investigated using light and transmission electron microscopy. These pouches linked to the posterior region of the esophagus are known as sugar glands as they contain a fluid rich in polysaccharide digesting enzymes. They are the second largest glands in the digestive system of chitons, just after the digestive gland. In both species, the pouches contain a dense array of finger-shaped villi. The villi epithelium includes absorptive cells, basophilic secretory cells, mucus-secreting cells, and basal cells. Some

Cross-reactivity of IgE antibodies to caddis fly with arthropoda and mollusca.

We investigated the possibility that subjects with IgE antibodies to an inhalant insect allergen, such as caddis fly, might also have antibodies to cross-reacting carbohydrate determinants (CCDs). IgE antibodies to cross-reacting allergens in caddis flies, mussels, oysters, shrimps, crabs, honeybee, and yellow jacket venoms were determined by RAST, RAST inhibition, and immunoblot studies with sera from three different sources: (1) sera of patients with well-defined inhalant atopy to caddis fly, (2) sera with IgE anti-CCD antibodies from subjects without known exposure to caddis fly, and (3) hy

First confirmed report of Nassarius sinarum (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in Korea.

BACKGROUND: The marine gastropod mollusc Nassarius sinarum has attracted attention due to its status as a potential invasive species and the ecological impact it may have on local environments and the fishing industry. It was observed exclusively within China initially, but its distribution now seems to have expanded into Japan and Korea. Accurate identification of N. sinarum, particularly in its juvenile stage, is vital for understanding its ecological influences and distribution patterns. NEW INFORMATION: This study represents the first comprehensive analysis of N. sinarum samples from Kore

Genetic variability and molecular identification of Brazilian Biomphalaria species (Mollusca: Planorbidae).

Freshwater snails belonging to the genus Biomphalaria are intermediate hosts of the trematode Schistosoma mansoni in the Neotropical region and Africa. In Brazil, one subspecies and ten species of Biomphalaria have been identified: B. glabrata, B. tenagophila, B. straminea, B. occidentalis, B. peregrina, B. kuhniana, B. schrammi, B. amazonica, B. oligoza, B. intermedia and B.t. guaibensis. However, only the first three species are found naturally infected with S. mansoni. The classical identification of these planorbids is based on comparison of morphological characteristics of the shell and m

Condyloma acuminata and mollusca contagiosa: a giant manifestation in a patient with lupus.

A 27-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus since childhood and treated with immunosuppressive therapy for many years was referred to our clinic for the presence of widespread condylomatosis and mollusca contagiosum localized in the genital area. These lesions appeared 4 years before and had been treated with both surgery and topical immunomodulation therapy without resolution. The patient stated that she had two sexual partners in that period, who showed no skin lesions. Cutaneous examination showed about 30 to 40 molluscoid lesions of 0.5 cm to 2 cm in diameter and widespread cauli

Lidocaine and prilocaine toxicity in a patient receiving treatment for mollusca contagiosa.

We describe a 3-year-old child with mollusca contagiosa whose caregiver applied a eutectic mixture of 5% lidocaine and prilocaine (EMLA) in excessive amounts with the subsequent development of adverse reactions, including methemoglobinemia and hypoxemia. Because of the significant systemic absorption of lidocaine and prilocaine, the patient required overnight admission to the pediatric intensive care unit for close monitoring. A brief description of the proper dosing, pharmacokinetics, and possible side effects of EMLA cream are reviewed.

Fine structure of the mineralized teeth of the chiton Acanthopleura echinata (Mollusca: Polyplacophora).

The major lateral teeth of the chiton Acanthopleura echinata are composite structures composed of three distinct mineral zones: a posterior layer of magnetite; a thin band of lepidocrocite just anterior to this; and apatite throughout the core and anterior regions of the cusp. Biomineralization in these teeth is a matrix-mediated process, in which the minerals are deposited around fibers, with the different biominerals described as occupying architecturally discrete compartments. In this study, a range of scanning electron microscopes was utilized to undertake a detailed in situ investigation

Anesthesia of Biomphalaria spp. (Mollusca, Gastropoda): sodium pentobarbital is the drug of choice.

The anesthetic effect of some water-soluble anesthesic or narcotic drugs currently used in mice was tested in molluscs of the Biomphalaria genus. Sodium thiopental was very toxic to the snails resulting in high rates of mortality in all the treatment schedules tested. Cetamine base, at concentration of 0.25 mg/ml of water, resulted in partial snail anesthesia (40% of snails were anesthetized) only after 20 h of exposition. The association of Cetamine base with Tiazine chloridrate did not improve the anesthesic effect, and higher concentrations of these drugs were toxic to the snails. Sodium pe

Stunting of the penis in Heleobia parchappii (Mollusca: Cochliopidae) and its relationship with parasitism.

Penis anatomy is used to discriminate species of gastropods belonging to the family Cochliopidae; however, this characteristic may be affected by the presence of parasites. To evaluate the possible effect of parasites on penis length and number of papillae in Heleobia parchappii, 195 males were collected from the Nahuel Rucá Lagoon, Argentina. Male snails were only infected by trematode digeneans (total prevalence 45.13%). Three out of 9 species of digeneans registered showed prevalence values higher than 10%: Microphallus szidati, M. simillimus, and Notocotylidae sp. 1. The penis length of no

[Membrane mechanisms of effects of antihypoxic agents bemethyl and almide on neurons of Mollusca].

Membranotropic effects of the antihypoxants bemithyl and almide, structural analogs of thiobenzimidazole, have been studied on the isolated neuronal preparations of Lymaea stagnalis branchycephalic mollusk. Both drugs in a concentration range of 100-1000 microM produced a reversible, dose-dependent nonselective single-phase blocking action upon the ion channels and completely blocked the channels at a concentration of 10 mM. Therefore, bemithyl and almide are active membranotropic compounds capable (in sufficiently high concentrations) of changing the conductivity of slow sodium, calcium, and

Imposex in the indigenous Nassarius kraussianus (Mollusca: Neogastropoda) from South African harbours.

Nassarius kraussianus populations in the Durban and Richards Bay harbours (along the eastern seaboard of southern Africa) and in the Knysna lagoon (southern Cape coast) showed imposex development, confirming bioavailability of tributyltin (TBT) in these waterways. Incidence of imposex (which ranged from 29% to 100%) and relative penis length of females (RPL; which ranged from 1.3% to 55.2%) were markedly variable among populations from different sites in each waterway, indicative of localised effects of TBT contamination. Shell length of the snails was apparently not correlated with contaminat

[Mollusca contagiosa--review and critical evaluation of a new form of therapy (author's transl)].

The present state of knowledge of the clinical features and therapy of molluscum contagiosum is reviewed. Treatment with retinoic acid, applied topically, is evaluated on the basis of 15 cases. In the majority of patients the lesions cleared up within an average of 8.9 days. This therapy is contraindicated only in patients with a disposition to develop eczema. This form of therapy appears to be superior to all those in common use up to the present date, especially in children with multiple or recurrent lesions.
