Zhongguo xue xi chong bing fang zhi za zhi = Chinese journal of schistosomiasis control2013chi
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the field effect of a novel plant molluscicide "Luo-wei" (Tea-seed distilled saponins, TDS) against Oncomelania hupensis in the lake and marshland regions.
METHODS: A spraying experiment was carried out in the grassland of two schistosomiasis endemic counties, including Xingzi in Jiangxi Province and the Huarong in Hunan Province, to assess the molluscicidal effect of 4% TDS comparing with 50% wettable powder of niclosamide ethanolamine salt (WPN). The chi2 test was used to examine the differences between regions, molluscicides, or days after spraying.
RESULTS: Followi

Schistosoma intercalatum bilharziasis continues to raise numerous questions regarding pathogenicity and gravity. The parasite was identified recently and the last fully described outbreak occurred 10 years ago in the city of Bata, Equatorial Guinea. Geographically Schistosoma intercalatum biharziasis is limited to one part of the African continent but has shown a tendency to spread. Hybridization of Schistosoma intercalatum and Schistosoma haematobium has been observed. The main clinical manifestation of Schistosoma intercalatum is rectal bleeding. The endoscopic appearance of lesions is varia

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the molluscicidal effect of niclosamidate against Oncomelania hupensis in laboratory and explore its mechanism by determining the enzyme activities of six important enzymes in snail soft tissues.
METHODS: O. hupensis snails were treated with niclosamidate at the concentration of 1.25 mg/L for 24 h and the snail soft tissues were separated and prepared for analysis. The enzyme activities of NOS, AChE, SDH, LDH, ACP and AKP were determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The morphology of the snail soft tissue was also observed.
RESULTS: Niclosamidate exhibited a poten

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic worms of several species of the genus Schistosoma. Transmission occurs by parasitic larvae that stay in freshwater snails of the genus Biomphalaria. Thus, the search for new products that are biodegradable has increased the interest in products of plant origin. The aim of this article is to review the isolated substances from natural products that showed molluscicidal activity against the species Biomphalaria glabrata in order to reevaluate the most promising prototypes and update the progress of research to obtain a new mollu

Some snail species pose a serious threat for human health, economy, and the environment due to their widespread distribution and the transmission of dangerous parasites causing, among others, schistosomiasis and fascioliasis. Scientists from around the world have been studying the effects of plant extracts on snails for many years in order to find an alternative to molluscicides of synthetic origin. The main purpose of this study was to collect the results obtained so far on the effect of plant alkaloids on snails in the context of their molluscicidal properties. This work presents the results

Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), is one of the most prevalent parasitoses in the World. Certain freshwater snail species are the intermediate host in the life cycle of schistosome species. Controlling snails employing molluscicides is an effective, quick, and convenient intervention strategy to prevent the spread of Schistosoma species in endemic regions. Advances have been made in developing both synthetic molluscicides and molluscicides derived from plants. However, at present, the development of molluscicides is not adapted to the actual demand for snails and schistosoma

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the molluscicidal effects of various water-free formulations of niclosamide ethanolamine salt against Oncomelania hupensis in the field of marshlands along the Yangtze River.
METHODS: The river beach with O. hupensis snails were selected as the test field in the marshland along the Yangtze River in Pukou District, Nanjing City. A molluscicidal experiment was carried out by the mechanical dusting method with the dustable powder (DP), powder-granule (PG), granule (GR) of niclosamide ethanolamine salt respectively. The snail mortality, corrected mortality, and the reduced

Schistosomiasis is a disease that affects tropical and subtropical areas and is considered the second most prevalent parasitic disease in the world. One of the ways of combating this disease is the use of molluscicidal agents to eliminate or reduce the population of intermediate host snails. Polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB) is a chemical biocide commonly used as a disinfectant and antiseptic in the food industry and very successfully for the disinfection of swimming pools. The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) indicated the PHMB as low environmental risk. The present s

OBJECTIVE: To observe the toxity of niclosamide on the growth of silkworms.
METHODS: Mulberry leaves were soaked in the different concentrations of solution of 50% ethanol salt powder of niclosamide for 10 s or 3 min, and then the leaves were fed to silkworms. The death rates of silkworms and the weight of cocoons were observed. Normal feeding control groups were established.
RESULTS: The death rates were 22.5%-85.0% and 56.0%-100% in the 10-s-soaked groups and 3-min groups, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in the control groups.
CONCLUSION: The 50% ethanol salt powd

METHODS: In the barren land with a lot of Oncomelania hupensis snails, 3 experimental groups were set up, in which respectively using 3 different methods: a simple plastic film mulch covering method, film assisted with ammonium bicarbonate, and film assisted with amine molluscicide. In the canals, two experimental groups were set up, in which respectively using 2 different methods: simple plastic film mulch covering method and film assisted with ammonium bicarbonate. AIM: Fascioliasis is an important helminth disease caused by Fasciola (F.) hepatica and F gigantica of Asia and Africa. This disease belongs to the plant-borne trematode zoonoses. Human infection has been reported in 51 different countries from 5 continents. One of the possible approaches to control this problem is to interrupt the life cycle of the parasitic trematodes by eliminating the snail.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Snails attractant pellets (SAP) were prepared from binary combination of carbohydrate + amino acid (20 mM) in 2% agar solution with active molluscicidal component Ferula asafoet

The niclosamide and uccmaluscide proved to be the most effective compounds, followed by copper sulphate. The second category of efficiency includes the anilofos, isoprothiolane and fluazifop-P-butyl. Moreover, Butachlor herbicide was the least potent compound. In general, the specific molluscicides showed more efficiency than the conventional tested herbicides and fungicides on treated snails. Pre-exposure to 1/10 LC50 of anilofos, butachlor and isoprothiolane showed synergistic effects to uccmaluscide. However, the same treatment with 1/10 LC50 of fluazifop-P-butyl, isoprothiolane and butachl

The development of large areas of irrigation farming in the south-eastern lowveld of Southern Rhodesia has produced the risk of severe transmission of schistosomiasis over an extent of some 30 000 ha. Control measures instituted by the Ministry of Health were primarily directed against the large and widely distributed snail populations by using molluscicides. The chemical was applied to the irrigation water by drip-feed methods once every 6-8 months. The drains, however, were treated routinely by pairs of rangers searching for snails and applying chemical where they were found. The efficacy of

Oncomelania hupensis snail control by chemical treatment is an important approach for control and elimination of snails, and an appropriate apparatus for spraying chemicals is an important support to molluscicidal effects. Nevertheless, the research and evaluation of molluscicidal apparatuses have not been paid high attention in the schistosomiasis control programme for a long period of time. Currently, agricultural plant-protective apparatuses have been widely used for chemical treatment. This comment provides a short overview of the application of drones in O. hupensis snail control by chemi
