Water quality assessment of rivers in Mongolia.

A study was made on the water quality of the rivers in Mongolia over the years 1949-1990 for the three river basins in the country. In most of the 72 monitoring stations, the water quality is governed by geological and hydrological characteristics; bicarbonate and calcium are the most abundant major ions. No significant trends were observed between river discharges and total dissolved solids contents. The sediment yields (expressed in the run-off of total suspended solids, TSS) were always low, viz. between 0.02 and 20 x 10(3) kg TSS/km2 yr. In general, the rivers in Mongolia showed low pollut

Epidemiological study of equine piroplasmosis in Mongolia.

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the occurrence of equine piroplasmosis in Mongolia, a country in which the disease occurs epidemically in different climatic conditions. Antibodies to Babesia equi and B. caballi were determined in serum samples of 254 pastured horses in different locations of Mongolia using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with recombinant antigens. One hundred and eighty-five (72.8%) and 102 (40.1%) of all serum samples were positive for B. equi and B. caballi infections, respectively. In addition, 78 (30.7%) samples were positive for both B. equi and B. cabal

Epidemiology of meningococcal meningitis in Sahel and Mongolia.

The epidemiological situation of meningococcal meningitis in the African meningitis belt and in Mongolia are presented. Studies on bacterial air pollution have been conducted in different types of dwellings in the two regions affected by meningococcal meningitis. Results have shown that during the dry (meningitis) season the air in dwellings is much more contaminated by bacteria, including those of oral origin, as a consequence of environmental conditions (crowding, activity, ventilation). A significant correlation between the bacterial counts and the incidence of meningococcal disease has bee

Viral Hepatitis and Liver Diseases in Mongolia.

Mongolia is known for its high endemicity for viral hepatitis. Previous studies report that the seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is 11.8% (178/1,512) among the unvaccinated population in 13 provinces and Ulaanbaatar city. The serosurvey of adults (>20 years of age) conducted during 2013 among persons in four provinces and in Ulaanbaatar showed that the overall prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positivity was 10.6%. The overall prevalence of anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HCV ribonucleic acid among 1,512 apparently healthy subjects was 15.6% (236/1,512) and 11.0% (167

Viral and bacterial diseases in livestock in Mongolia.

This review focuses on the status of infectious diseases that are serious for animal health and have adverse economic effects in Mongolia. Data presented here are limited due to the lack of published or other easily available documents. Foot-and-mouth disease continues to cause substantial economic losses as exemplified by the outbreak of infection with serotype O PanAsia lineage virus. In the case of the 2001 outbreak, a 65% reduction in export revenues was recorded. In order to ascertain the free status of Mongolia from rinderpest, sero-epidemiological surveillance has been carried out since

Prevalence of equine piroplasmosis in Central Mongolia.

Antigen for the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) was routinely prepared from infected erythrocytes from horses experimentally infected with Babesia equi and Babesia caballi. With the successful establishment of in vitro cultures of B. equi and B. caballi, it is now possible to employ culture-derived antigens in this test. In this study, in vitro-propagated B. equi- and B. caballi-infected erythrocytes were used as antigen in the IFAT. Various modifications to an established protocol had to be implemented to allow repeatable results. Cultures with 3-4% parasitized erythrocytes were fou

Sequence diversity of hepatitis D virus in Mongolia.

INTRODUCTION: The Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV) is a defective, single-stranded RNA virusoid encoding for a single protein, the Hepatitis Delta Antigen (HDAg), which requires the hepatitis B virus (HBV) envelope protein (HBsAg) for its transmission. Currently, hepatitis D is the most aggressive form of viral hepatitis and treatment options are limited. Worldwide 12 million people are chronically infected with HDV being at high risk for progression to cirrhosis and development of liver cancer. OBJECTIVES: Although it is well established that Mongolia is the country with the highest prevalence of

Epidemiology of Viral Hepatitis and Liver Diseases in Mongolia.

UNLABELLED: Mongolia which is located in Northern Asia between Russia and China is endowed with one of lowest population density in the world. Acute hepatitis due all types of hepatitis virus has been reported in Mongolia. Also, dual and triple hepatitis viruses, HBV, HDV and HCV are highly prevalent among patients with chronic liver disease living in Mongolia. Due to these facts, liver cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in Mongolia. The national immunization program including vaccination against hepatitis B was started in 1991 and screening of blood donations for HBsAg and anti-H
