The mammalian yolk sac placenta.

There are three fetal membranes in mammals, namely the yolk sac, allantois and amnion, but only the first two form a placenta. In Monotremata (monotremes), Marsupialia (marsupials) and Placentalia (eutherians), the yolk sac transfers nutrients originating from uterine glandular secretion or the maternal blood. Ontogenetically, the yolk sac of most eutherians loses contact with the peripheral chorion and forms a free splanchnopleuric yolk sac that transfers substances from the exocoelomic cavity, not directly from the endometrium as in marsupials and rodents. This free yolk sac has been preserv

Responses of electroreceptors in the snout of the echidna.

1. This is a report of experiments which provide evidence in support of the existence of an electric sense in the echidna, or spiny anteater Tachyglossus aculeatus. It is the first known example of electroreception in a terrestrial animal. 2. In each of four animals anaesthetized with alpha-chloralose, afferent responses were recorded in dissected filaments of the infraorbital branch of the trigeminal nerve which supplies skin of the upper jaw. Recordings were obtained from a total of forty-seven units identified as electroreceptors, by their responses to weak voltage pulses using focal stimul

Parathyroids and ultimobranchial bodies in monotremes.

Only scant information is available in the scientific literature on the parathyroids and ultimobranchial bodies in the primitive mammals, the echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) and platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus). The major aim of this paper is to describe the morphology of the monotreme parathyroid gland and to compare it with parathyroids in mammals and reptiles. The gross anatomy and light microscopic structure of the ultimobranchial body, thymus, and thyroid are also given. Animals were dissected and routine light and electron microscopic techniques used to examine the microscopic morpho

Deciphering Ancestral Sex Chromosome Turnovers Based on Analysis of Male Mutation Bias.

The age of sex chromosomes is commonly obtained by comparing the substitution rates of XY gametologs. Coupled with phylogenetic reconstructions, one can refine the origin of a sex chromosome system relative to specific speciation events. However, these approaches are insufficient to determine the presence and duration of ancestral sex chromosome systems that were lost in some species. In this study, we worked with genomic and transcriptomic data from mammals and squamates and analyzed the effect of male mutation bias on X-linked sequences in these groups. We searched for signatures indicating

Intestinal glycosidase activities in one adult and two suckling echidnas: absence of a neutral lactase (beta-D-galactosidase).

The activities of various glycosidases in homogenates of the small-intestinal mucosa of one adult and two suckling echidnas, Tachyglossus aculeatus, were investigated. The activities of lactase (beta-D-galactosidase), beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase, neuraminidase and alpha-L-fucosidase were higher in the sucklings than in the adult animal. Maltase and isomaltase activities were lower. Sucrase and cellobiase activities were absent or present in trace amounts only. The lactase activity had a pH optimum of 4.0-4.5, was predominantly in the soluble fraction following ultracentrifugation and was inhi

Are aggressive epithelial cancers 'a disease' of Eutherian mammals?

Placental immune editing switches (PIES) have not evolved to prevent or to cause cancer but to make feto-maternal immune tolerance possible, which is at the very core of our placental mammalian ('Eutherian') nature. Aggressive epithelial cancers might be an unfortunate 'side effect' of this highly sophisticated biological nature. Microenvironmental properties in the placenta and decidua are thought to be a key to feto-maternal immune tolerance. Recently, in 2016-2018, we published the first human genomic and epigenomic evidence of similar gene expression profiles in immune regulatory genes in

Metabolic effects of cortisol, corticosterone and adrenocorticotrophin in a prototherian mammal Tachyglossus aculeatus (Shaw).

The effects of injections of cortisol, corticosterone and ACTH on indices of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism were investigated in the conscious echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus. Intravenous infusion of cortisol and corticosterone for 2 h at rates of 3 and 30 microgram/kg/h respectively did not cause significant changes in the plasma concentrations of glucose, urea or amino acids during a 12.5 h observation period. In contrast, a dose-related increase in plasma free fatty acid (FFA) concentration was observed. Infusion of synthetic ACTH at 2 i.u./kg/h for 2 h caused a minor, short-lived

The Fast and the Furriest: Investigating the Rate of Selection on Mammalian Toxins.

The evolution of venom and the selection pressures that act on toxins have been increasingly researched within toxinology in the last two decades, in part due to the exceptionally high rates of diversifying selection observed in animal toxins. In 2015, Sungar and Moran proposed the 'two-speed' model of toxin evolution linking evolutionary age of a group to the rates of selection acting on toxins but due to a lack of data, mammals were not included as less than 30 species of venomous mammal have been recorded, represented by elusive species which produce small amounts of venom. Due to advances

New Cretaceous marsupial from Mongolia and the early radiation of Metatheria.

A marsupial mammal from Mongolia representing a previously unreported group, Asiadelphia, offers unequivocal evidence that metatherians were represented on the continent of Asia during the Late Cretaceous (Campanian), even in the northern arid interior. Asiatherium is known by skull, left and right mandibles, and most of its postcranial skeleton. Comparisons of the dentition, ear region, and aspects of the postcranium not only allow its diagnosis as an Asian group of metatherians but also permit a diagnosis of the Metatheria based on the unequivocally apomorphous condition of the dental formul

Glycoproteins secreted by sublingual glands of the echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus).

The portion of echnida sublingual glycoproteins which could be solubilized was fractionated by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel and by filtration on a column of Sephadex G-100. Analyses for carbohydrate and amino acid are given and are compared with those of the submaxillary mucins of cattle, dog, pig and sheep. The molar ratio of galactosamine to sialic acid was roughly 1:1 in the echidna fractions, the sialic acid was N-acetyl-neuraminic acid, and there was very little neutral sugar. Proline was relatively high in amount, and isoleucine, half-cystine, methionine, leucine, tyrosine, and

Special challenges of maintaining wild animals in captivity in Australia and New Zealand: prevention of infectious and parasitic diseases.

The authors review infectious and parasitic diseases of eutherians (excluding marine mammals), marsupials, reptiles and birds in Australia and New Zealand. The diseases discussed are those which are common and/or more likely to affect humans. The emphasis is placed on the type of animal affected, the epidemiology, and hence the control or prevention measures necessary. Clinical signs, pathology and treatment are not considered in any detail.

The nocturnal bottleneck and the evolution of mammalian vision.

Evidence from the early paleontological record of mammalian evolution has often been interpreted as supporting the idea that mammals were nocturnal for most of their early history. Multiple features of extant mammal sensory systems, such as evolutionary modifications to the light-regulated circadian system, photoreceptor complement, and retinal morphology, support this nocturnal hypothesis for mammalian evolution. Here, we synthesize data on eye shape and orbit orientation in mammals as these data compare to other amniotes. Most mammals differ from other amniotes in retaining an eye design opt

Phylogeny and Molecular Characterisation of PRNP in Red-Tailed Phascogale (Phascogale calura).

Background/Objectives: The normal cellular prion protein (PrPC) is a cell-surface glycoprotein, mainly localised in neurons of the central nervous system (CNS). The human PRNP gene encodes 253 amino acid residues of precursor PrPC. Several studies that investigated the role of PRNP and PrPC in placental mammals, such as humans and mice, failed to reveal its exact function. Methods: In this study, we sequenced and characterised the PRNP gene and PrPC of the marsupial, P. calura, as a strategy to gain molecular insights into its structure and physicochemical properties. Placentals are separated

Identification and characterization of amelogenin genes in monotremes, reptiles, and amphibians.

Two features make the tooth an excellent model in the study of evolutionary innovations: the relative simplicity of its structure and the fact that the major tooth-forming genes have been identified in eutherian mammals. To understand the nature of the innovation at the molecular level, it is necessary to identify the homologs of tooth-forming genes in other vertebrates. As a first step toward this goal, homologs of the eutherian amelogenin gene have been cloned and characterized in selected species of monotremes (platypus and echidna), reptiles (caiman), and amphibians (African clawed toad).
