Continuing Orthohantavirus Circulation in Deer Mice in Western Montana.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is an often-fatal disease caused by New World hantaviruses, such as Sin Nombre orthohantavirus (SNV). In the US, >800 cases of HPS have been confirmed since it was first discovered in 1993, of which 43 were reported from the state of Montana. The primary cause of HPS in the US is SNV, which is primarily found in the reservoir host Peromyscus maniculatus (deer mouse). The reservoir host covers most of the US, including Montana, where multiple studies found SNV in local deer mouse populations. This study aimed to check the prevalence of SNV in the deer mice at

First record of native entomopathogenic nematodes from Montana agroecosystems.

A total of 30 different agricultural fields in the Golden Triangle Region of Montana, USA were surveyed, and 150 soil samples were evaluated for the presence of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). The authors isolated EPNs from 10% of the collected samples. The recovered isolates were identified as Steinernema feltiae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora by using morphological and molecular analysis. Steinernema feltiae was found from two fields, Kalispell (S. feltiae 1) and Choteau (S. feltiae 2). Steinernema feltiae (1 and 2) differed significantly from each other in terms of morphological chara

Tick-borne relapsing fever caused by Borrelia hermsii, Montana.

Five persons contracted tick-borne relapsing fever after staying in a cabin in western Montana. Borrelia hermsii was isolated from the blood of two patients, and Ornithodoros hermsi ticks were collected from the cabin, the first demonstration of this bacterium and tick in Montana. Relapsing fever should be considered when patients who reside or have vacationed in western Montana exhibit a recurring febrile illness.

Elk Resource Selection and Implications for Anthrax Management in Montana.

Anthrax, caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is a zoonotic disease that affects humans and animals throughout the world. In North America, anthrax outbreaks occur in livestock and wildlife species. Vaccine administration in wildlife is untenable; the most effective form of management is surveillance and decontamination of carcasses. Successful management is critical because untreated carcasses can create infectious zones increasing risk for other susceptible hosts. We studied the bacterium in a re-emerging anthrax zone in southwest Montana. In 2008, a large anthraxepizoot

Ovine abortion and neonatal death due to toxoplasmosis in Montana.

Of 33 ewes in a flock in Montana, 6 aborted or gave birth to weak lambs, which died within 2 days after birth. Two lambs and a placenta from 1 ewe as well as 1 lamb from another ewe were submitted for diagnosis. Focal necrotizing placentitis, focal pneumonia, focal hepatitis, focal interstitial nephritis, and focal nonsuppurative encephalitis were seen in tissue sections from 2 of the lambs. Toxoplasma gondii was found in smears and sections of the placenta and in sections of lung from 1 lamb. Mice inoculated with tissues from a lamb developed dye test antibodies to T gondii. Eleven of 12 ewes

Training for rural prehospital providers: a retrospective analysis from Montana.

OBJECTIVE: This paper provides a retrospective analysis of training methods used by rural Montana's prehospital care providers. Drawn from both published and unpublished sources and spanning the past 25 years, it examines the origins of training in this vast rural state and aims to shed light on successful, nontraditional training delivery methods currently being used. Because volunteer personnel traditionally provide prehospital emergency care in rural areas, development and implementation of effective training programs are generally considered important to helping these practitioners maintai

Effect of Satureja montana Essential Oil on Model Lipid Membranes.

Satureja montana essential oil is a natural substance able to inhibit the growth of several pathogens. This antimicrobial effect is often attributed to its ability to penetrate cellular structures and disrupt them. Although these properties are recognized as playing a key role in the mechanism of action of this substance, many unresolved issues still exist, and fundamental studies focused on such aspects are scarce. In this framework, we investigated the interaction of SEO with lipid monolayers, which represent simplified models of cell membranes, using the Langmuir monolayer technique, comple

Mortality from asbestos-associated disease in Libby, Montana 1979-2011.

Research on asbestos exposure in Libby, MT, has focused on occupational exposure in vermiculite mining and processing, but less attention has been paid to asbestos-related mortality among community members without vermiculite mining occupational history. Our study reports on asbestos-related mortality in Libby over 33 years (1979-2011) while controlling for occupational exposure. We calculated sex-specific 33-year standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) for Libby residents who died from 1979 to 2011 with an asbestos-related cause of death. Decedent address at time of death was geocoded to confirm

Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia montana from Ixodid ticks in Connecticut.

Dermacentor variabilis, infected with spotted fever group rickettsiae, parasitized 8 of 70 raccoons captured in Newtown, Connecticut. The spotted fever agent, Rickettsia rickettsii, was isolated and identified from 4 adult D. variabilis and from 1 nymphal Ixodes texanus removed from raccoons. This verifies the presence of this etiologic agent in ticks in an area where 6 people had clinical signs and symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) and antibodies to R. rickettsii. These are the first isolations of R. rickettsii from D. variabilis in southern New England and the first identified

Histoplasmosis in a state where it is not known to be endemic--Montana, 2012-2013.

Histoplasmosis is caused by infection with the dimorphic fungus, Histoplasma capsulatum, following inhalation of contaminated soil. Among symptomatic patients, the most common clinical presentation is acute pneumonia. Persons with compromised immune systems are at risk for disseminated histoplasmosis, a severe illness requiring antifungal therapy that is often characterized by fever, malaise, anorexia, and weight loss. H. capsulatum is endemic in the Ohio River and Mississippi River valleys, where it is found in soil enriched with bird droppings and bat guano. During November 2012-February 201

Metagenomic Profiling of Microbial Pathogens in the Little Bighorn River, Montana.

The Little Bighorn River is the primary source of water for water treatment plants serving the local Crow Agency population, and has special significance in the spiritual and ceremonial life of the Crow tribe. Unfortunately, the watershed suffers from impaired water quality, with high counts of fecal coliform bacteria routinely measured during run-off events. A metagenomic analysis was carried out to identify potential pathogens in the river water. The Oxford Nanopore MinION platform was used to sequence DNA in near real time to identify both uncultured and a coliform-enriched culture of micro

Antigenotoxicity of Roupala montana extract in the mouse micronucleus and comet assays.

Roupala montana Aubl. (Proteaceae) is a typical savannah species and native to tropical South America that has a moderate mortality for adult forms of Schistossoma mansoni. Because this species has been little studied, the aim of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of R. montana extract on DNA damage induced by methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) in peripheral blood cells and liver of Swiss mice using the micronucleus and comet assay, respectively. R. montana dichloromethane extract was prepared from a stock solution (0.5 mg/mL) in 5% dimethyl sulfoxide in water. Animals received a sing
