A Gaussian-plume based Monte Carlo method for calculating radiation dose in the near field of buildings.

A Monte Carlo (MC) programme was written using the dose point kernel method to calculate doses in the roof zone of a building from nearby releases of radioactive gases. A Gaussian Plume Model (GPM) was parameterised to account for near-field building effects on plume spread and reflection from the roof. Rooftop recirculation zones and building-generated plume spread effects were accounted in a novel Dual Gaussian Plume (DGP) formulation used with the MC model, which allowed for the selection of angle of approach flow, plume release height in relation to the building and position of the release

Monte Carlo Method and GA-MLR-Based QSAR Modeling of NS5A Inhibitors against the Hepatitis C Virus.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a serious disease that threatens human health. Despite consistent efforts to inhibit the virus, it has infected more than 58 million people, with 300,000 deaths per year. The HCV nonstructural protein NS5A plays a critical role in the viral life cycle, as it is a major contributor to the viral replication and assembly processes. Therefore, its importance is evident in all currently approved HCV combination treatments. The present study identifies new potential compounds for possible medical use against HCV using the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR)

A Monte Carlo based method to estimate radiation dose from multidetector CT (MDCT): cylindrical and anthropomorphic phantoms.

The purpose of this work was to extend the verification of Monte Carlo based methods for estimating radiation dose in computed tomography (CT) exams beyond a single CT scanner to a multidetector CT (MDCT) scanner, and from cylindrical CTDI phantom measurements to both cylindrical and physical anthropomorphic phantoms. Both cylindrical and physical anthropomorphic phantoms were scanned on an MDCT under the specified conditions. A pencil ionization chamber was used to record exposure for the cylindrical phantom, while MOSFET (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor) detectors were used

Determination of spatial dose distribution in UCC treatments with LDR brachytherapy using Monte Carlo methods.

Using Monte Carlos methods, with the MCNP5 code, a gynecological phantom and a vaginal cylinder were modeled. The spatial distribution of absorbed dose rates in Uterine Cervical Cancer treatment through low dose rate brachytherapy was determined. A liquid water gynecology computational phantom, including a vaginal cylinder applicator made of Lucite, was designed. The applicator has a linear array of four radioactive sources of Cesium 137. Around the vaginal cylinder, 13 water spherical cells of 0.5 cm-diameter were modeled to calculate absorbed dose emulating the procedure made by the treatmen

Evaluation of maternal and fetal S-values from iodine isotopes in nuclear medicine using the Monte Carlo method.

Internal dosimetry is critical in nuclear medicine, particularly for high-risk groups such as pregnant patients where minimizing radiation exposure to both the mother and fetus is essential. This study employs Monte Carlo simulations to calculate S-values for various target organs in a pregnant woman and her fetus, considering different maternal source organs and three iodine isotopes (131I, 125I, and 123I). Our findings indicate that 131I, with the highest emission energy, produces higher dose deposition in organs located farther from the source, while 125I results in more localized dose abso

Dosimetric assessment of an air-filled balloon applicator in HDR vaginal cuff brachytherapy using the Monte Carlo method.

PURPOSE: As an alternative to cylindrical applicators, air-inflated balloon applicators have been introduced into high-dose-rate (HDR) vaginal cuff brachytherapy to achieve sufficient dose to the vagina mucosa as well as to spare organs at risk, mainly the rectum and bladder. Commercial treatment planning systems which employ formulae in the AAPM Task Group No. 43 (TG 43) report do not take into account tissue inhomogeneity. Consequently, the low-density air in a balloon applicator induces different doses delivered to the mucosa from planned by these planning systems. In this study, we investi

Determining joint carrier probabilities of cancer-causing genes using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods.

In genetic counseling for cancer risk, the probability of carrying a mutation of a cancer-causing gene plays an important role. Family history of various cancers is important in calculating this probability. BRCAPRO is a widely used software for calculating the probability of carrying mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes given the family history of breast and ovarian cancer in first- and second-degree relatives. BRCAPRO uses an analytical (exact) calculational procedure. Using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, we extend BRCAPRO to handle, in principle, any type of cancer, family history,

Comparison of Gonadal Dose Estimation Using Treatment Planning Systems and Monte Carlo Methods in Pelvic Radiotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Unintended irradiation of organs outside the target volume remains a concern in pelvic radiotherapy, particularly for radiosensitive structures such as the gonads. Analytical dose calculation algorithms used in treatment planning systems (TPS) may underestimate out-of-field doses. Monte Carlo (MC) methods provide improved dosimetric accuracy. This study compared gonadal dose estimates from a clinical TPS with those obtained using MC simulations. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 30 patients treated for rectal or gynaecological malignancies using 3D conformal rad

Evaluation of the KERMA approximation method in Monte Carlo dose calculations for BNCT involving a realistic 3D patient phantom.

Monte Carlo (MC) methods are generally recognized as the gold standard for dose calculations. However, achieving high statistical confidence is computationally expensive, particularly when complex secondary particles are involved. Kinetic Energy Released in Matter (KERMA) approximation method is a variance reduction technique widely used in MC simulations. This study evaluated the accuracy and efficiency of the KERMA approximation for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) dose calculations using the TOol for PArticle Simulation MC code. Simulations were performed on a CT phantom of a glioblasto

Dosimetric evaluation and benchmarking of proton beam delivery methods in heterogeneous phantoms using the PHITS Monte Carlo code.

Proton therapy is a precise radiation technology; this study focuses on simulating dose distributions in pelvic and thoracic geometries representative of complex clinical scenarios. Two prominent delivery methods, Pencil Beam (PB) and Uniform Beam (UB), are employed to maximize damage to target cancer cells while minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissues. This work proposes an efficient Monte Carlo simulation approach using PHITS to model energy deposition in anatomical regions involving high-density (bone) and low-density (lung) tissue interfaces. The simulation was designed to deliver c

Battery length as a moderator of classification accuracy for cognitive impairment: a Monte Carlo simulation using actuarial and Bayesian methods.

OBJECTIVE: This Monte Carlo simulation study examined whether neuropsychological test battery length impacts cognitive impairment classification accuracy using actuarial and Bayesian interpretive frameworks. Three hypotheses were tested: (a) longer batteries yield higher false-positive rates due to cumulative probability effects; (b) longer batteries show superior classification accuracy; and (c) abbreviated batteries have higher false-negative rates. METHOD: Four simulated batteries of varying length, domain coverage, and redundancy were applied to 10,000 virtual patient profiles. Sensitivit

Analysis of a deep learning-based method for generation of SPECT projections based on a large Monte Carlo simulated dataset.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, a lot of effort has been put in the enhancement of medical imaging using artificial intelligence. However, limited patient data in combination with the unavailability of a ground truth often pose a challenge to a systematic validation of such methodologies. The goal of this work was to investigate a recently proposed method for an artificial intelligence-based generation of synthetic SPECT projections, for acceleration of the image acquisition process based on a large dataset of realistic SPECT simulations. METHODS: A database of 10,000 SPECT projection datasets o

Measurement uncertainty for <711> Dissolution tests using Monte Carlo methods - Uncertainties arising from sampling and analytical steps.

BACKGROUND: The dissolution test is a critical quality control method in the pharmaceutical industry, primarily used to assess drug bioavailability and ensure the consistency of manufactured batches. This test simulates the release of the active ingredient in the body and verifies compliance with specifications through multiple stages (e.g., S1, S2, S3). However, measurement uncertainty can undermine the reliability of test results, potentially leading to erroneous conformity decisions. This study aims to quantify the uncertainties arising from the dissolution, sampling, and quantification ste

SAF values for internal photon emitters calculated for the RPI-P pregnant-female models using Monte Carlo methods.

Estimates of radiation absorbed doses from radionuclides internally deposited in a pregnant woman and her fetus are very important due to elevated fetal radiosensitivity. This paper reports a set of specific absorbed fractions (SAFs) for use with the dosimetry schema developed by the Society of Nuclear Medicine's Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD) Committee. The calculations were based on three newly constructed pregnant female anatomic models, called RPI-P3, RPI-P6, and RPI-P9, that represent adult females at 3-, 6-, and 9-month gestational periods, respectively. Effect of rotation axis and modulation on x-ray emission in dose assessment in panoramic radiographs using the Monte Carlo method.

This study investigates the impact of rotation axis configuration and modulation of tube voltage (kV) and dose rate on organ dose estimates in dental panoramic radiography, using Monte Carlo simulations. Computational phantoms representing 15 year-old male and female patients were each exposed to 16 protocol scenarios across three panoramic radiography units, varying the rotation centre (sliding versus fixed) and the presence or absence of x-ray beam modulation. Simulations were conducted using the particle and heavy-ion transport code system code, employing dump files and a multi-source appro

Evaluation of radiation damage effects of low-energy Auger and conversion electrons emitted by 134Ce decay using a Monte Carlo method.

Targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT) is a cancer treatment method that delivers radiation to specific tumor cells, enabling efficient tumor cell killing. Radionuclides emitting short-range beta or alpha particles have previously been the primary focus. TRT approaches utilizing low-energy electrons, such as Auger and internal conversion electrons, have attracted interest because of their highly localized tumor-killing potential. 134Ce is an imaging surrogate in the form of a 134Ce/134La pair for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in 225Ac targeted alpha therapy, and it has recently exhib

Investigating the closure stress and crack initiation stress in fractured rocks using the student t distribution and Monte Carlo simulation method.

Traditional method of determining closure and initiation stress of fractured rocks by analyzing the stress-strain curve has problems such as strong subjectivity and large errors. This study utilized the rock closure stress values and onset stress values determined by three traditional methods, namely, axial strain method, fracture volume method and empirical value taking method, as the base database. The Student t distribution theory was used to obtain a confidence interval based on its overall distribution of values and to achieve a combination of the advantages of multiple methods. Within co
