Practitioner-Centered Design: A Case Study of a Human-Computer Interaction-Clinician Collaboration on the Development of Prototype Virtual Reality Environments for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Moral Injury in Health Care Workers.

The development of virtual reality-based psychotherapies requires interdisciplinary teams of subject matter experts, including technical and clinical experts. Such teams benefit from a "bridge"-either an existing team member with knowledge of multiple disciplines or, in the absence of a bridge member, a focused understanding of the norms and content of other involved fields. This article explores a collaboration between technical and clinical professionals developing immersive environments for treating posttraumatic stress disorder and moral injury in health care workers. This type of collabor

Does Childhood Maltreatment Predict Moral Disgust? The Underlying Mediating Mechanisms.

Although moral disgust is one of the most important moral emotions, there is limited evidence about the antecedents of it in China. This paper aimed to discuss the linkage between childhood maltreatment and moral disgust, and investigated the specific mechanism between these two variables from the perspective of emotional development and moral development, respectively, based on the Tripartite Model. By combining random sampling and cluster sampling, this study recruited 968 participants from college. Then, childhood maltreatment, moral disgust, emotional intelligence, and empathy were measure

A Psychoanalytically Informed Pilot Study of Moral Competence in German Young Adults Linked to Personality Structure and Parenting Experiences.

The present pilot study explored associations between moral competence, personality structure and perceived parenting experiences. While previous research on moral competence has mainly emphasized educational and cognitive determinants, this work represents a novel psychoanalytically informed investigation of this ability. A sample of 88 young adults aged 18 to 21 completed an online survey including the Moral Competence-Test, OPD-Structure-Questionnaire, and Zurich Brief Questionnaire for the Assessment of Parental Behaviors. Exploratory analyses revealed a positive association between moral

Experience and Contributing Factors of Moral Injury in Military Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Moral injury among military personnel is characterized by profound psychological, relational, and existential distress arising from experiences that violate deeply held moral values. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Moral injury may be accompanied by guilt, shame, social disconnection, and increased suicide risk, thereby threatening both individual well-being and military readiness. This qualitative meta-synthesis aimed to elucidate military personnel's experiences of moral injury and identify the factors contributing to its development, persistence, and recovery. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

The use of service learning in client environments to enhance ethical reasoning in students.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effects of two service-learning experiences on the psychosocial and moral reasoning development of occupational therapy students. The assumption was that ethical reasoning ability can be facilitated through participation in value-laden experiences. METHOD: Participants visited older adults in nursing homes (n = 19) or interacted with persons with disabilities in community settings (n = 33). All participants reflected on their experiences through weekly journals. Psychosocial and moral reasoning development were measured at the beginning and end of the exper

The Moral Competence Test in healthcare education: a critique based on informal logic.

The article critically examines Georg Lind's Moral Competence Test, which is often used to assess the moral abilities of healthcare professionals and students. Test results have purportedly shown that students' moral competence declines during their studies; they have also failed to demonstrate the effectiveness of most ethics education methods. Based partly on Kohlberg's theory of moral development, the test presents moral dilemmas followed by arguments for and against the protagonists' decisions. Each argument corresponds to one of Kohlberg's stages of moral development. Participants rate ho

That's not fair: Children's neural computations of fairness and their impact on resource allocation behaviors and judgments.

The ability to distinguish between mere equality in resource distributions and fairness based on a broader range of contextual factors is of paramount importance in social decision making and is a critical component of morality. Children's developmental shift from viewing inequality as a dichotomous moral issue toward a more nuanced understanding of partial inequality has been well documented across middle childhood and is attributed to a host of potential theoretical underpinnings, including developing number concept, increased regard for one's social status, and a maturing concept of fairnes

Moral distress & moral community: A narrative review of the literature.

Moral distress is recognized as a major contributor to burnout and attrition among nurses. While the sequelae of moral distress are profound, the antecedents of moral distress are multi-factorial and therefore the phenomenon is challenging to address. Many interventions target individual-level factors such as moral resilience; however, moral distress is a system-level problem. As such, there is a growing focus on developing upstream, system-level interventions to mitigate or prevent moral distress in the healthcare setting. Moral community is a system-level dynamic that reflects ethical climat

Toward a framework of moral challenges in military operations: implications for psychological resilience.

This perspectives paper presents a programmatic integrative review and preliminary framework informed by a multi-year, multi-method research program conducted at Defence Research and Development Canada - Toronto Research Centre to document moral experience in military operational contexts. Drawing on a multidisciplinary, empirically grounded program integrating qualitative, experimental, field, and survey methods, the paper outlines a framework in which operational environments can give rise to moral challenges-ethically salient situations that may test values or the ability to act-which can e

Parenting styles and Chinese preschoolers' moral sensitivity: domain-specific associations and moderating roles of child gender and age.

Parenting is widely regarded as an important factor in children's early moral development. The present study examined the associations between maternal and paternal parenting styles (emotional warmth, overprotection, and rejection) and preschool children's moral sensitivity across the five moral foundation domains (care, fairness, loyalty, authority, and purity) in a Chinese sample, and tested whether child gender and age moderated these associations. Participants were 143 preschoolers aged 3 to 6 years (70 boys, 73 girls) and their parents from six kindergartens in Guangzhou, China. Parents i

We are still in it: a conceptual model for moral injury and burnout in alternative response programs to guide intervention.

INTRODUCTION: About 20% of police calls involve a person experiencing a behavioral health crisis. To better address these community member's needs and reduce risk of harm, jurisdictions are developing programs that shift calls for crises related to homelessness, addiction, and mental health to non-law enforcement alternatives. In responding to these calls, first responders working in these alternative response programs are exposed to a different set of moral dilemmas and pressures, increasing their risk of developing moral injury. METHODS: The Alternative Response Program Moral Injury and Bur

Predictors of Moral Distress Among Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Investigating the predictors of moral distress is particularly important for protecting nurses' mental health and professional satisfaction, thereby preventing burnout and attrition from the profession. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the predictors of moral distress among nurses. A cross-sectional study design was used. The sample consisted of 412 nurses from 11 hospitals across Slovakia. The mean age of the respondents was 40.48 years (SD = 10.92). Moral distress was assessed using the Modified Moral Distress Scale. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate predictors of

Reimagining resuscitation ethics: a narrative review and emergent ethical pathways model.

BACKGROUND: Decision-making surrounding cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) presents persistent ethical challenges in acute and critical care. Existing evidence points to ambiguous do-not-resuscitate pathways, moral distress, family-driven demands, and systemic pressures, yet these influences are often examined separately. This review synthesizes current evidence to clarify the ethical, relational, and organizational dynamics that influence CPR-related decisions. METHODS: We conducted a structured narrative review of four databases (Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Embase) for studies publishe

Sociomoral reflection and prosocial and antisocial behavior: two Italian studies.

Two Italian studies on the development of moral judgment based on the 1992 Sociomoral Reflection Measure-Short Form of Gibbs, Basinger, and Fuller were performed. In Study 1, 49 male and female adolescent volunteers involved in prosocial activities and a control group of 60 nonvolunteers completed the form. In Study 2, 60 male drug abusers in a drug-rehabilitation community were compared with a matched group of 60 nondrug abusers. Analysis showed that involvement in prosocial activities was associated with higher stages of moral judgment and Type B responses, while drug abuse was associated wi

Commentary on the Special Issue on Moral Injury: Leveraging Existing Constructs to Test the Heuristic Model of Moral Injury.

The literature on moral injury (MI) is currently undermined by the lack of clear boundaries regarding the construct and a dearth of research on the processes by which potentially morally injurious events lead to MI. The heuristic continuum model of moral stressors proposes ways of distinguishing between moral frustrations, moral distress, and MI. In this commentary, we highlight five testable principles that can be derived from the heuristic model and evaluated using well-established constructs. Specifically, we describe meaningful distinctions between guilt and shame and address how these mor

The codevelopment of moral and conventional normative stances from 2.5 to 3.5 years: A cross-lagged panel approach.

Developmental science has accumulated considerable evidence that by 2 to 3 years of age, children begin to appreciate the obligatory nature of different social norms and distinguish between moral and conventional transgressions. However, little is known about the early ontogenetic trajectories of normative stances in the moral and conventional domains. Theoretical considerations point to three open questions: (1) Do young children's reactions toward transgressions of moral and conventional norms show increasing differentiation over this age period? (2) To which extent are young children's mora

The association between adverse childhood experiences and moral hypocrisy: the chain-mediated role of fear of failure and ego depletion.

To examine the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and moral hypocrisy among college students, and to elucidate the underlying psychological mechanisms, this study-guided by Ecological Systems Theory and Ego Depletion Theory-investigated the psychological processes through which ACEs may contribute to moral hypocrisy. A questionnaire survey was administered to 1,082 college students. Results indicated that: (1) ACEs positively predicted moral hypocrisy; (2) fear of failure independently mediated the ACEs-moral hypocrisy relationship; (3) ego depletion independently mediate
