IVF Doctors as Moral Pioneers and Moral Guardians in Pronatalist China.

In this article I examine the roles of IVF doctors in two state-owned hospitals amid China's shift to pronatalism. Rather than simply promoting infertility treatment, some doctors act paternalistically as "moral pioneers" and "moral guardians," reappropriating moral authority granted by biomedical expertise to persuade many women of "advanced maternal age" seeking a second child through ART to reconsider or discontinue treatment. Their reasoning arises from navigating contradictory reproductive governance while drawing on personal moral values. While reinforcing state narratives on declining f

A latent profile analysis of moral emotions following moral transgressions.

OBJECTIVE: Moral transgressions (MTs), events that violate one's moral code, are associated with the moral emotions of guilt and shame. However, there may be different patterns by which people experience guilt and shame that affect distress following MTs. METHOD: Undergraduates (N = 1371) exposed to an MT completed self-report assessments. This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to examine profiles based on guilt cognitions, internalized shame, and distress in relation to a reported MT. Cognitive flexibility, years since the MT, and deliberate and intrusive rumination were examined as v

Between Moral Relativism and Moral Hypocrisy: Reframing the Debate on "FGM".

The spectrum of practices termed "Female Genital Mutilation" (or FGM) by the World Health Organization is sometimes held up as a counterexample to moral relativism. Those who advance this line of thought suggest the practices are so harmful in terms of their physical and emotional consequences, as well as so problematic in terms of their sexist or oppressive implications, that they provide sufficient, rational grounds for the assertion of a universal moral claim--namely, that all forms of FGM are wrong, regardless of the cultural context. However, others point to cultural bias and moral double

The Phenomenology and Dynamics of Wealth Shame: Between Moral Responsibility and Moral Masochism.

In an age of striking inequality in wealth, a related phenomenon, wealth shame, has developed. A multidisciplinary exploration of such shame examines its intrapsychic, intersubjective, transgenerational, and sociopolitical roots in the U.S., as well as its multiple functions: as an ethical response to economic disparity (moral responsibility), as a manifestation of a pervasive shame pattern (moral masochism), and as a defense against pleasure, feelings of superiority, and the fear of being envied. Several clinical vignettes illustrate these themes and are followed by reflections on their clini

Centripetal and centrifugal forces in the moral circle: Competing constraints on moral learning.

The idea of the moral circle pictures the self in the center, surrounded by concentric circles encompassing increasingly distant possible targets of moral concern, including family, local community, nation, all humans, all mammals, all living things including plants, and all things including inanimate objects. The authors develop the idea of two opposing forces in people's moral circles, with centripetal forces pulling inward, urging greater concern for close others than for distant others, and centrifugal forces pushing outward, resisting "drawing the line" anywhere as a form of prejudice and

Evolutionary establishment of moral and double moral standards through spatial interactions.

Situations where individuals have to contribute to joint efforts or share scarce resources are ubiquitous. Yet, without proper mechanisms to ensure cooperation, the evolutionary pressure to maximize individual success tends to create a tragedy of the commons (such as over-fishing or the destruction of our environment). This contribution addresses a number of related puzzles of human behavior with an evolutionary game theoretical approach as it has been successfully used to explain the behavior of other biological species many times, from bacteria to vertebrates. Our agent-based model distingui

Moral identity and the expanding circle of moral regard toward out-groups.

This article examines moral identity and reactions to out-groups during intergroup conflict Four studies suggest that a highly self-important moral identity is associated with an expansive circle of moral regard toward out-group members (Study 1) and more favorable attitudes toward relief efforts to aid out-group members (Study 2). Study 3 examines moral identity and national identity influences on the provision of financial assistance to out-groups. Study 4 investigates the relationship between moral identity and (a) the willingness to harm innocent out-group members not involved in the confl

Cyborgs and moral identity.

Neuroscience and technological medicine in general increasingly faces us with the imminent reality of cyborgs-integrated part human and part machine complexes. If my brain functions in a way that is supported by and exploits intelligent technology both external and implantable, then how should I be treated and what is my moral status-am I a machine or am I a person? I explore a number of scenarios where the balance between human and humanoid machine shifts, and ask questions about the moral status of the individuals concerned. The position taken is very much in accordance with the Aristotelian

Epidemiology and moral philosophy.

To an increasing extent ethical controversies affect and sometimes obstruct public health work and epidemiological research. In order to improve communication between the concerned parties a model for identification and analysis of ethical conflicts in individual-based research has been worked out in co-operation between epidemiologists and moral philosophers. The model has two dimensions. One dimension specifies relevant ethical principles (as beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice). The other dimension specifies the groups of persons involved in the conflict under consideration (

Psychotherapy of moral masochism.

The psychotherapeutic approach to sadomasochism is discussed with clinical examples. The necessary attributes of the therapist and specific therapeutic techniques are emphasized so as to avoid the destructive, uncontrollable negative therapeutic reactions. A better modulated transference can be interpreted with beneficial results.

Medicine and Moral Innocence.

In 1990, Congress established the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHP). The program has since expanded to cover numerous treatments and support services. It is hard to overstate how transformative RWHP has been, but hundreds of thousands of other people had died from the same condition White had, so why did politicians wait to enact serious AIDS health care? Bluntly, White's AIDS education activism was sympathetic because he embodied a "moral innocence," a quality the public did not usually extend to gay men, intravenous drug users, or others who suffered from HIV/AIDS. I ask two questions about

Human morality and temperament.

This chapter has tried to make two points. First, the concept of morality refers to a developmental cascade of phenomena whose essential features are (a) inhibition of punished acts; (b) a representation of prohibited actions; (c) the emotions of uncertainty, empathy, shame, and guilt; (d) the semantic concepts of good and bad; (e) accepting the moral obligations of social categories; and (f) the concepts of fairness and the ideal. The inhibition of prohibited actions and the cognitive representation of prohibited behaviors, as well as the affect states that follow violations, appear by the en

Large language model attributes and perceived moral agency of artificial moral advisors.

INTRODUCTION: Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used as conversational artificial moral advisors capable of providing ethical guidance, moral reflection, and recommendations regarding complex moral dilemmas. Despite their ability to generate coherent and persuasive moral discourse, LLMs lack genuine moral understanding, intentionality, and reflective judgment, raising concerns that users may overattribute moral agency to these systems. Drawing on Theory of Mind, AI Moral Agency, and the Godspeed framework, this study investigates how perceived LLM attributes-namely anthropomorphism

Morality cut both ways: The role of cognition and emotion in attitude moralization and demoralization.

Moralized attitudes motivate social change, political participation, and charitable giving, but at the same time, hinder compromise, conformity, and acceptance of procedural solutions to conflict. Although considerable research has explored the consequences of moralized attitudes, the processes that lead to attitude moralization and demoralization are less clear. Across six studies (N = 4,464), we contrasted the moralization of attitudes about male circumcision (typically viewed as a matter of preference or convention in the United States) with the demoralization of attitudes about female circ

The moralized coalitions model: How coalitional thinking and moralization shape social perception.

Social identities increasingly align along partisan lines in the United States, creating the potential for "moralized coalitions" that structure how people perceive and evaluate others. We propose the moralized coalitions model: When people mentally represent social groups as overlapping coalitions, these representations prompt category-based inferences and shape social evaluation, especially when group boundaries are moralized. Rather than representing groups primarily in terms of traits or beliefs, individuals may also construe social groups (e.g., political parties) as coalitions of overlap

Are moral people happier? Answers from reputation-based measures of moral character.

Philosophers have long debated whether moral virtue contributes to happiness or whether morality and happiness are in conflict. Yet, little empirical research directly addresses this question. Here, we examined the association between reputation-based measures of everyday moral character (operationalized as a composite of widely accepted moral virtues such as compassion, honesty, and fairness) and self-reported well-being across two cultures. In Study 1, close others reported on U.S. undergraduate students' moral character (two samples; Ns = 221/286). In Study 2, Chinese employees (N = 711) re
