Association Between Moraxella catarrhalis and Nodular Lymphocyte-Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma (NLPHL) may be an antigen-driven malignancy. Recent studies demonstrated that in NLPHL patients, lymphoma B-cell receptor can bind proteins derived from Moraxella catarrhalis (MC) and Rothia mucilaginosa (RM). We examined whether MC and RM can be detected in NLPHL lymph nodes. The presence of MC DNA and RNA was tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and RNAScope in situ hybridization (ISH), respectively. The presence of RM DNA was tested by PCR. We demonstrated the presence of MC DNA in 29 of 49 (59.2%) NLPHL patient tumor samples and RNA in 1

Identification of a conserved Moraxella catarrhalis haemoglobin-utilization protein, MhuA.

Moraxella catarrhalis is a leading cause of acute otitis media in children and is a cause of respiratory disease in adults with underlying lung disease. This organism is a strict human pathogen that has an absolute requirement for iron in order to grow and cause disease. Previous studies identified transferrin and lactoferrin receptors used by M. catarrhalis to obtain iron from the human host, yet other iron-acquisition systems remain undefined. In this study, it is demonstrated that this strict mucosal pathogen can utilize haemoglobin (Hb) as a sole source of iron for growth. A novel 107 kDa

[A rare case of endocarditis due to Moraxella catarrhalis in an immunocompetent patient].

Moraxella catarrhalis is a gram-negative, catalase and oxidase positive diplococcus. While it causes otitis media, sinusitis, bronchitis and conjunctivitis in children and adults, it has a tendency to cause lower respiratory tract infections in older ages. More severe clinical pictures with the range of sepsis to endocarditis are also seen in immunocompromised patients. In this report, a case of M. catarrhalis endocarditis in an immunocompetent host who needed valve replacement has been presented. Forty three years old female patient was admitted to our hospital with the complaints of fever, n

Moraxella catarrhalis sepsis in a patient with juvenile spinal muscle atrophy.

Moraxella catarrhalis rarely causes severe infections or bacteraemia in healthy subjects. In the literature only four cases of clinical sepsis with M. catarrhalis have been described, mostly in immunocompromised patients. We describe a case of a 34-year-old patient with Kugelberg-Welander disease and low body weight (28 kg) who developed clinical sepsis due to M. catarrhalis bacteraemia. A review of the literature is given.

Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis--clinical and molecular aspects of a rediscovered pathogen.

Since its discovery at the end of the nineteenth century, Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis has undergone several changes of nomenclature and periodic changes in its perceived status as either a commensal or a pathogen. Molecular analysis based on DNA hybridisation or 16S rDNA sequence comparisons has established its phylogenetic position as a member of the Moraxellaceae and shown that it is related more closely to Acinetobacter spp. than to the genus Neisseria in which it was placed formerly. However, confusion with phenotypically similar Neisseria spp. can occur in the routine diagnostic l

Inhibiting F-Actin Polymerization Impairs the Internalization of Moraxella catarrhalis.

Moraxella catarrhalis, a commensal in the human nasopharynx, plays a significant role in the acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Its pathogenicity involves adherence to respiratory epithelial cells, leading to infection through a macropinocytosis-like mechanism. Previous investigations highlighted the diverse abilities of M. catarrhalis isolates with different phenotypes to adhere to and invade respiratory epithelial cells. This study used a murine COPD model and in vitro experiments to explore the factors influencing the pathogenicity of distinct phenotypes o

A Unique Case of Moraxella catarrhalis Meningitis Following Neurosurgical Intervention.

We present a rare case of Moraxella catarrhalis meningitis in a 51-year-old immunocompetent woman after surgical resection of a fourth ventricle ganglioma. Notably, the patient had no history of sinusitis or otitis media, which are typical predisposing factors for Moraxella infection. She developed symptoms including headache, altered mental status, and neurological deficits three days post discharge, leading to her diagnosis confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid culture. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges and management complexities of atypical meningitis post neurosurgery. The occurre

Moraxella catarrhalis Promotes Stable Polymicrobial Biofilms With the Major Otopathogens.

Otitis media (OM) is a prevalent pediatric infection characterized by painful inflammation of the middle ear. The Gram-negative diplococcus Moraxella catarrhalis is a commensal of the nasopharynx and one of three leading causative agents of OM. The most recent work on this multifaceted disease indicates that biofilms and polymicrobial infections play a pivotal role in recurrent and chronic OM, which are difficult to eradicate using standard antibiotic protocols. Although there have been significant advances in OM research, the actual bacterial and viral interactions leading to pathogenesis rem

Moraxella catarrhalis: clinical significance, antimicrobial susceptibility and BRO beta-lactamases.

Moraxella catarrhalis is an important pathogen of humans. It is a common cause of respiratory infections, particularly otitis media in children and lower respiratory tract infections in the elderly. Colonisation of the upper respiratory tract appears to be associated with infection in many cases, although this association is not well understood. Nosocomial transmission is being increasingly documented and the emergence of this organism as a cause of bacteremia is of concern. The widespread production of a beta-lactamase enzyme renders Moraxella catarrhalis resistant to the penicillins. Cephalo

Subtractive genomics profiling for potential drug targets identification against Moraxella catarrhalis.

Moraxella catarrhalis (M. catarrhalis) is a gram-negative bacterium, responsible for major respiratory tract and middle ear infection in infants and adults. The recent emergence of the antibiotic resistance M. catarrhalis demands the prioritization of an effective drug target as a top priority. Fortunately, the failure of new drugs and host toxicity associated with traditional drug development approaches can be avoided by using an in silico subtractive genomics approach. In the current study, the advanced in silico genome subtraction approach was applied to identify potential and pathogen-spec

Novel mechanism responsible for high-level macrolide resistance in Moraxella catarrhalis.

BACKGROUND: High-level macrolide-resistant Moraxella catarrhalis strains have been isolated; however, the underlying mechanism has not been well elucidated. We investigated the role of mutations in the 23S rRNA gene and the L4 and L22 ribosomal proteins using spontaneous erythromycin-resistant mutants and transformants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The erythromycin-susceptible M. catarrhalis ATCC25238 and clinical isolate Mc19 were used as parental strains. To obtain spontaneous erythromycin-resistant mutants, in vitro stepwise selection was performed using brain-heart infusion agar plates containi

Respiratory syncytial virus promotes Moraxella catarrhalis-induced ascending experimental otitis media.

Otitis media (OM) is a polymicrobial disease wherein prior or concurrent infection with an upper respiratory tract virus plays an essential role, predisposing the middle ear to bacterial invasion. In episodes of acute bacterial OM, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most commonly isolated virus and thus serves as an important co-pathogen. Of the predominant bacterial agents of OM, the pathogenesis of disease due to Moraxella catarrhalis is the least well understood. Rigorous study of M. catarrhalis in the context of OM has been significantly hindered by lack of an animal model. To bridge

Comparative analysis and supragenome modeling of twelve Moraxella catarrhalis clinical isolates.

BACKGROUND: M. catarrhalis is a gram-negative, gamma-proteobacterium and an opportunistic human pathogen associated with otitis media (OM) and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). With direct and indirect costs for treating these conditions annually exceeding $33 billion in the United States alone, and nearly ubiquitous resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics among M. catarrhalis clinical isolates, a greater understanding of this pathogen's genome and its variability among isolates is needed. RESULTS: The genomic sequences of ten geographically and phenotypically diver

Serological cross-reactions between Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis and other oropharyngeal bacteria.

Oropharyngeal bacteria belonging to different species were tested for serological cross-reactions with Moraxella catarrhalis using sera from immunized rabbits. Sera were tested using immunofluorescence, an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and immunoblotting. On immunofluorescence, significant cross-reactions were demonstrated with beta-hemolytic streptococci group A and group G, as well as with streptococci of the viridans group. Some cross-reactions were also noted with Neisseria meningitidis. In the EIA, strong cross-reactions were demonstrated with beta-hemolytic streptococci. No cross-reactions we

Asymptomatic carriers of Neisseria meningitidis and Moraxella catarrhalis in healthy children.

There is a close correlation between asymptomatic oropharyngeal colonization by bacterial pathogens and paediatric respiratory diseases. Evaluation of the frequency of asymptomatic carriers of Neisseria meningitidis and Moraxella catarrhalis in healthy children was the main aim of the current study. In this cross-sectional study, 123 oropharyngeal swabs were collected from children between 2 and 6 years old in kindergartens of Ilam, Iran. Moraxella catarrhalis and N. meningitidis were identified using phenotypic and genotypic assays. In addition, the occurrence of the virulence factors (ctrA a

Virulence determinants of Moraxella catarrhalis: distribution and considerations for vaccine development.

Moraxella catarrhalis is a human-restricted opportunistic bacterial pathogen of the respiratory mucosa. It frequently colonizes the nasopharynx asymptomatically, but is also an important causative agent of otitis media (OM) in children, and plays a significant role in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults. As the current treatment options for M. catarrhalis infection in OM and exacerbations of COPD are often ineffective, the development of an efficacious vaccine is warranted. However, no vaccine candidates for M. catarrhalis have progressed to clinical t

In childhood recurrent respiratory infection with Moraxella catarrhalis have high incidence demonstrated by multiple risk factors association (atopia, immunsuppresion, chronic diseases, malnutrition) that makes this common bacteria pathogen. The study was carried on 56 children (0-16 years old). Authors try to find correlations between clinical signs and microbiological markers that determine recurrent respiratory infection with Moraxella catarrhalis. Treatment consisted of association between "target" antibiotherapy and immunomodulation drugs. Efficacy of this treatment was proven by decrease

Multifactorial inhibition of lactobacilli against the respiratory tract pathogen Moraxella catarrhalis.

Probiotics, mainly lactic acid bacteria (LAB), are widely focused on gastrointestinal applications. However, recent microbiome studies indicate that LAB can be endogenous members of other human body sites such as the upper respiratory tract (URT). Interestingly, DNA-based microbiome research suggests an inverse correlation between the presence of LAB and the occurrence of potential pathogens, such as Moraxella catarrhalis, an important URT pathogen linked to otitis media, sinusitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, a direct interaction between these microbes has not been expl

Outer membrane porin M35 of Moraxella catarrhalis mediates susceptibility to aminopenicillins.

BACKGROUND: The outer membrane protein M35 is a conserved porin of type 1 strains of the respiratory pathogen Moraxella catarrhalis. It was previously shown that M35 is involved in the uptake of essential nutrients required for bacterial growth and for nasal colonization in mice. The aim of this study was (i) to characterize the potential roles of M35 in the host-pathogen interactions considering the known multifunctionality of porins and (ii) to characterize the degree of conservation in the phylogenetic older subpopulation (type 2) of M. catarrhalis. RESULTS: Isogenic m35 mutants of the typ
