The objective of this study was to evaluate if Moraxella bovoculi was associated with Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) using a corneal scarification model in calves. A 3-arm single-eye block-randomized and blinded challenge study was designed as follows: corneal scarification only, corneal scarification and inoculation with M. bovoculi (ATCC strain: BAA-1259; origin: CA) and corneal scarification and inoculation with Moraxella bovis (strain Epp63-300; origin: NADC). The study was conducted in 3 replicates of 10-12 animals housed in individual pens with no nose-to-nose contact. Calv

The difficulties in preventing and treating infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) and the consequent impact on the cattle industry worldwide emphasize the need to better understand this infectious process along with the biology of Moraxella bovis, its primary causative agent. Although there is increasing evidence that bacterial biofilms participate in a variety of ocular infections by direct biofilm formation on the surfaces of the eye, IBK has not been considered as a biofilm-based disease so far, and even more, no information is currently available regarding the ability of M. bovis to

Urogenital schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the parasite Schistosoma haematobium, which resides in the vasculature surrounding the urogenital system. Previous work has suggested that helminthic infections can affect the intestinal microbiome, and we hypothesized that S. haematobium infection could result in an alteration of immune system-microbiota homeostasis and impact the composition of the gut microbiota. To address this question, we compared the fecal microbiomes of infected and uninfected schoolchildren from the Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Niger

BACKGROUND: Psychrobacter species are aerobic, Gram-negative, spherical-to-rod-shaped, psychrophilic bacteria that belong to the Moraxellaceae family. In spite of their uncommon manifestation in the general population, infections due to Psychrobacter spp. are increasingly identified especially in immunocompromised individuals or patients with severe comorbidities.
OBJECTIVES: This review aims to analyze all reported instances of Psychrobacter spp. infections in humans, with an emphasis on data pertaining to epidemiology, microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, treatment strategies, and mortal

Establishing causation, otherwise known as causal assessment, is a difficult task, made more difficult by the variety of causal assessment frameworks available to consider. In this article, Bradford Hill viewpoints are used to discuss the evidence base for Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi being component causes of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. Each of the nine Bradford Hill viewpoints are introduced and explained: strength, consistency, specificity, temporality, biologic gradient, plausibility, coherence, experiment, and analogy. Examples of how the viewpoints have been applied

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative, non-fermenting coccobacillus of the Moraxellaceae family. It is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for several hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) associated with skin and tissue infections at surgical sites, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, and central line catheters. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) A. baumannii has caused hospital outbreaks that are difficult to eradicate and represent one of the leading producers of HAIs. MDR-A. baumannii presents a broad range of resistance to different antimicrobials, including carbapenems.

BACKGROUND: Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in beef cattle has major welfare and production implications. Effective vaccination against IBK would also reduce antibiotic use in beef production.
OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the efficacy of a conditionally licensed commercial IBK vaccine containing Moraxella bovoculi bacterin. Primary working hypothesis was that animals vaccinated with 2 doses of the commercial M. bovoculi vaccine would have a lower risk of disease.
ANIMALS: Spring born calves at a university cow-calf herd. After excluding animals with ocular lesions, calves e

The success of the immunization programs against Haemophilus influenzae type b and, more recently, Streptococcus pneumoniae in developed and some developing countries has demonstrated that invasive disease caused by these bacteria can be very effectively controlled by vaccination. There is also evidence that pneumococcal vaccines can reduce the incidence of acute otitis media in children. More complete control of this disease would be achieved if infections caused by Moraxella catarrhalis and nontypeable H. influenzae, the other common agents of otitis media in children and of a number of resp

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is associated with 2 species of Moraxella: M. bovis and M. bovoculi. A third novel Moraxella spp., designated tentatively as M. oculi, has been identified from the eyes of cattle with and without pinkeye. These 3 Moraxella spp. can be found in various combinations within the same clinical sample, making speciation of this genus directly from a sample impossible with Sanger sequencing. Assessing Moraxella diversity found in IBK- and non-IBK-affected cattle eyes, independent of culture, may provide additional information about IBK by avoiding the sele

A three-year-old spayed domestic short-haired cat presented for evaluation of weight loss, cardiomegaly and pleural effusion. Echocardiographic examination demonstrated a thickened pericardium with mild pericardial effusion and a large volume of pleural effusion characterized by exudate. Although the cat was treated with antibiotics, the clinical symptoms did not improve. The cat developed dyspnea and died on day 7. Necropsy revealed a large amount of modified transudates ascites, pleural effusion and markedly dilated pericardium. Histopathological examination revealed severe exudation of fibr

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis is a common and highly contagious ocular disease affecting cattle worldwide. The tremendous economic losses attributable to this disease warrant continued investigation into methods of prevention. Multiple virulence factors have been linked to the primary aetiologic agent, Moraxella bovis. Efforts to develop an efficacious vaccine have primarily focused upon the use of surface pili or cytolysin to stimulate host immunity; however, M. bovis possesses other virulence determinants that include proteases, fibrinolysins, phospholipases and other cell surface c

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic diseases pose a significant threat to public health. Chlamydia, as an intracellular pathogen, can colonize the intestinal tract of humans and animals, changing the gut microbiota. However, only a few studies have evaluated alterations in the gut microbiota of horses infected with Chlamydia. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate gut microbiota and serum biochemical indicators in horses with Chlamydial infection (IG) and healthy horses (HG). Fecal and blood samples were collected from 16 horses (IG: 10; HG: 6) before morning feeding for the determination of gut microbio

Zanubrutinib, a second-generation Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor used in B-cell malignancies, has a favorable systemic safety profile, whereas its ocular surface effects remain insufficiently defined. We report a 73-year-old woman receiving zanubrutinib for mantle cell lymphoma who presented with acute pain and decreased vision in the right eye. Slitlamp examination revealed a corneal epithelial defect with an associated stromal infiltrate in the right eye and bilateral epithelial surface abnormalities. The patient reported three months of bilateral ocular irritation and conjunctival hyperem

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) has been associated with ocular infections by Moraxella bovis, the established etiologic agent of IBK, and more recently, Moraxella bovoculi, a recently described species of Moraxella. To assist in designing rational treatment regimens for M. bovoculi infections associated with IBK, the in vitro susceptibilities of 57 M. bovoculi field isolates cultured from eyes of cattle with IBK in California from 2002 through 2007 were determined. The minimum inhibitory concentration required to inhibit the growth of 90% of organisms (MIC(90)) of the following 1

Acute respiratory tract infections, such as bacterial pneumonia and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, have been identified by the World Health Organisation as the leading global infectious cause of death. An increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance has been identified worldwide in the three major bacterial respiratory pathogens -Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Haemophilus influenzae. The selection and spread of resistance is to some degree inevitable and the importance of monitoring its progress has led to the instigation of numerous international, regional a

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has been strongly associated with alterations in the oropharyngeal microbiota, yet the microbial features linked to disease severity remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to elucidate the microbial signatures associated with COVID-19 disease severity.
DESIGN: 16S rRNA gene sequencing was employed to profile the oropharyngeal microbiota of patients with varying degrees of COVID-19 severity.
RESULTS: A significant reduction in alpha diversity suggests a major microbial dysbiosis in critically ill patients compared to less severe cases and healthy individuals, wherea
