Clinical Molecular and Genomic Epidemiology of Morganella morganii in China.

Objectives: Ongoing acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes has made Morganella morganii a new clinical treatment challenge. Understanding the molecular epidemiology of M. morganii will contribute to clinical treatment and prevention. Methods: We undertook a 6-year clinical molecular epidemiological investigation of M. morganii from three tertiary hospitals in China since 2014. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using a VITEK-2 system. All isolates were screened for β-lactam and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes by PCR. Isolates carrying carbapenem-resistant gen

Immunohistopathologic demonstration of pleuropneumonia associated with Morganella morganii in a piglet.

Serofibrinous pleuropneumonia in a piglet was examined microbiologically and immunohistopathologically. Large numbers of Morganella morganii were isolated from the pneumonic lesion, but no other pathogens were identified. A large amount of M. morganii antigen was demonstrated, and its distribution was closely associated with the histologic lesion. This finding suggests that pleuropneumonia in piglets might be caused by M. morganii.

Case of chorioamnionitis in an immunocompetent woman caused by Morganella morganii.

Morganella morganii is an opportunistic organism that leads to serious morbidity. It is an enteric organism commonly associated with immunocompromise and chronic urinary catheterization. We present a case of a healthy gravid individual who presented with chorioamnionitis and neonatal seizures associated with M. morganii. This organism, which causes severe morbidity, is fortunately rare in obstetrics and gynecology.

Comparative Genomic Analysis of 66 Bacteriophages Infecting Morganella morganii Strains.

Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically target bacteria and play a crucial role in influencing bacterial evolution and the transmission of antibiotic resistance. In this study, we explored the genomic profiles of 66 bacteriophages that infect Morganella morganii, an opportunistic pathogen associated with difficult-to-treat nosocomial and urinary tract infections. Our findings highlight the extraordinary diversity within this phage population, reflected in their genomic features, evolutionary relationships, and potential contributions to bacterial pathogenicity. The 66 phage genomes exhibi

Morganella morganii: a newly reported, rare cause of neonatal sepsis.

This case report reviews the clinical course of an 11-day-old boy who developed late-onset neonatal sepsis secondary to a rare neonatal pathogen, Morganella morganii. This gram-negative enteric bacterium, within the Enterobacteriaceae family, has most commonly been a nosocomial pathogen in debilitated, postsurgical patients. Like many other Enterobacteriaceae, M. morganii has an inducible beta-lactamase and is resistant to multiple antibiotics. When caring for neonates with culture-proven M. morganii sepsis, the authors recommend administering both a third-generation cephalosporin and an amino

Fatal Morganella morganii bacteraemia in a diabetic patient with gas gangrene.

We report a case of a 60-year-old lady with a history of a heel ulcer that had not responded to antibiotic therapy. This progressed to involve the right leg, which was swollen and erythematous. Radiological imaging revealed the presence of gas within the fascial planes. Blood cultures on admission yielded Morganella morganii. Due to the extent of the gas gangrene and her co-morbidities the patient was not suitable for surgical intervention and was treated conservatively with antibiotics. She deteriorated and died within 72 h of presentation. Non-clostridial gas gangrene is relatively rare, and

[Occurrence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Morganella morganii strains isolated from clinical samples].

The aim of this study was the evaluation of occurrence and antimicrobial susceptibility of M morganii rods isolated from clinical samples. This study included 201 strains isolated in the Clinical Microbiology Department of Dr. A. Jurasz University Hospital in 2008-2010. Identification to species was carried out on the basis of the results of biochemical reactions included in the tests ID 32E and VITEK2 GN. Antimicrobial susceptibility of M. morganii rods was determined by the disk-diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton II Agar. Strains of M morganii most commonly isolated from skin and soft tissue

Brain abscess caused by Morganella morganii: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Morganella morganii is a Gram-negative enteric rod found in the intestinal tracts of humans, mammals, and reptiles as normal flora. It is highly implicated in urinary tract infections, wound infections, and septicemia. The cerebral nervous system, especially brain abscess attributed to M. morganii, remains extremely rare. To the best of the author's knowledge, only eight documented cerebral brain abscesses caused by M. morganii have been reported in the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 48-year-old man presented with headache, fever, and irritability two months after endoscopic endo

Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of Morganella morganii infections: A multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Morganella morganii is a Gram-negative, opportunistic pathogen that can cause a variety of infections, including bloodstream infections, especially in those with compromised immune systems. It is often resistant to antibiotics, making it a difficult organism to treat. Limited studies have addressed M. morganii, but the organism is becoming increasingly recognized as a public health threat. More research is needed to understand the epidemiology and virulence factors of M. morganii in Saudi Arabia, as well as to develop effective treatment strategies. METHODS: This retrospective stu

Postvitrectomy endophthalmitis caused by Morganella morganii: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Postvitrectomy endophthalmitis is a rare and serious complication following vitreoretinal surgeries. Morganella morganii, an emerging gram-negative, facultative anaerobic rod, is related to severe nosocomial infections in various organs and thus has gained importance in recent decades. Morganella morganii infection following intraocular surgery is rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an immunocompetent patient with Morganella morganii-related endophthalmitis after vitrectomy for retinal detachment who presented with hand motion visual acuity, hypopyon and a unique retrole

Catfish spine envenomation and bacterial abscess with Proteus and Morganella: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Abscess formation and cellulitis in the setting of envenomation are rare complications of handling catfish. To the best of our knowledge, isolation of Proteus vulgaris has not been previously recorded, and recovery of Morganella morganii has been reported in only one prior case from wound cultures in patients injured by catfish stings. We report a case of catfish envenomation characterized by abscess formation and cellulitis, in which wound cultures grew these unusual organisms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old Chinese-American man was hospitalized with erythema and swelling of

[Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome associated to a Morganella morganii and Enterococcus faecium peritonitis].

About fifty to sixty percent of patients with septic shock acquire acute adrenal insufficiency. This insufficiency is most often relative, but can sometimes be absolute. Bilateral adrenal haemorrhage is a rare aetiology of absolute acute adrenal insufficiency. It is classically described in patients with severe meningococcemia (purpura fulminans), who commonly present many of the risk factors associated with bilateral adrenal haemorrhage (shock, coagulation disorders, sepsis). We report a case of bilateral adrenal haemorrhage during a peritonitis complicated by a septic shock, with no coagulat

Association of reactive arthropathy and Morganella morganii cross reacting with Yersinia enterocolitica.

Two patients exhibited reactive arthropathy in association with chronic diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Rising titres of agglutinating antibody to Yersinia enterocolitica O3 were observed in association with arthropathy. Morganella morganii was isolated from faeces of one patient in heavy growth. In both patients, absorption of the sera with morganella antigen abolished yersinia reactivity. Morganella titres were more than 8 times the yersinia titres and were unaffected by absorption with Yersinia. Neither patient had detectable antibody to the predominant enterobacterial species present in faec

Morganella morganii Peritonitis Associated with Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) after Colonoscopy.

A 79-year-old man on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) developed abdominal pain and cloudy peritoneal fluid two days after colonoscopy that revealed multiple diverticula. The white blood cell count was 9,000 cells/μL, C-reactive protein level was 6.86 mg/dL, and the white blood cell count of the peritoneal fluid was 7,800 cells/μL, suggesting acute peritonitis. Empiric therapy consisting of cefazolin and ceftazidime slowly improved the patient's symptoms. The initial microbiological examination of the peritoneal fluid demonstrated Morganella morganii. He was changed from CAPD to

Whole-genome sequencing and identification of Morganella morganii KT pathogenicity-related genes.

BACKGROUND: The opportunistic enterobacterium, Morganella morganii, which can cause bacteraemia, is the ninth most prevalent cause of clinical infections in patients at Changhua Christian Hospital, Taiwan. The KT strain of M. morganii was isolated during postoperative care of a cancer patient with a gallbladder stone who developed sepsis caused by bacteraemia. M. morganii is sometimes encountered in nosocomial settings and has been causally linked to catheter-associated bacteriuria, complex infections of the urinary and/or hepatobiliary tracts, wound infection, and septicaemia. M. morganii inf

Morganella morganii-derived histamine impairs intestinal barrier function via HRH4 and aggravates colitis.

BACKGROUND: Pro-inflammatory dietary patterns are associated with an increased risk of Crohn's disease (CD) and shifts in the gut microbiota. Our previous multi-omics analysis had identified the enrichment of Morganella morganii (M. morganii) in both patients with CD and individuals consuming pro-inflammatory diets. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role and potential mechanisms by which M. morganii contributes to intestinal inflammation. METHODS: Using murine models of colitis, mouse colon organoids, and epithelial cell systems, combined with metabolomic profiling and pharmacologica
