Skewed birth sex ratio and premature mortality in elephants.

Sex allocation theories predict equal offspring number of both sexes unless differential investment is required or some competition exists. Left undisturbed, elephants reproduce well and in approximately even numbers in the wild. We report an excess of males are born and substantial juvenile mortality occurs, perinatally, in captivity. Studbook data on captive births (CB, n=487) and premature deaths (PD, <5 years of age; n=164) in Asian and African elephants in Europe and North America were compared with data on Myanmar timber (Asian) elephants (CB, n=3070; PD, n=738). Growth in CB was found i

Premature expulsion of the placenta and bovine perinatal mortality.

In one study two cases of premature expulsion of the placenta were recorded among 60 supervised calvings (3.3 per cent); both calves died. In a second study, 47 cases were recorded among 332 cases of perinatal mortality (14.2 per cent). The condition was associated with fetal malpresentation and malposture, and mortality either before or during parturition. There was no significant relationship between the occurrence of premature expulsion of the placenta and parity, calving difficulty, previous calving history or the sex of the calf. The condition in cattle is compared with placenta praevia i

[Perinatal mortality and asphyxia in premature babies (author's transl)].

The aim of the present investigation was to study the influence of O2-ventilation, blind buffer therapy with Na-bicarbonate, late cord clamping and infusion of low molculare weight dextran on morbidity of Respiratory-Distress-Syndrom (RDS) and mortality during the first week in infants with a birthweight of 2500 g and less. The charts of 536 infants were studied. There were 481 life birth and 55 stillbirth (10.2%). In 185 infants the pH and Base-excess in the umbilical arterial blood was meassured. The infants born in 1969--1971 were compaired with them born in 1972--1973. In 52% of the "prema

Type A behavior pattern is not a predictor of premature mortality.

BACKGROUND: Type A personality was introduced in the 1950s and was defined as an action-emotion complex characterized by excessive competitive drive, intense striving for achievement, easily provoked hostility, aggressiveness, impatience, and exaggerated sense of time urgency. Despite many positive findings earlier, almost 50 years of studies have not yielded conclusive results regarding Type A as a risk factor for negative health outcomes and early death. This may partly be due to methodological weaknesses such as small and selected samples, short follow-up times, and varying ways to assess T

The economic burden of COVID-19 premature mortality in Kuwait.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has caused substantial mortality worldwide, with significant economic consequences. In countries with segmented labour markets, such as Kuwait—where most citizens work in the public sector and most non-Kuwaitis occupy high-exposure essential jobs—the economic impact of premature mortality could be considerably high and these losses may differ across population groups. No prior study in the Gulf region has quantified these losses using established valuation methods. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Kuwait between 2020 and 20

Vitamin D, premature mortality, and life expectancy among US adults.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is prevailing worldwide and linked to multiple diseases; however, its association with premature mortality remains unknown in the US. METHODS: To investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D or 25(OH)D concentrations and premature mortality and life expectancy in a nationally representative cohort of US adults. We analyzed data of adults aged ≥ 18 years included in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination (NHANES III) (1988 - 1994) and NAHANES (2001 - 2018) with linkage to th

[Morbidity and mortality of retarded and normal weight premature infants].

Differences of fetal outcome between appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and small for gestational age (SGA) preterm newborns with birth weight below 2500 g and gestational age ranging from 27 to 36 weeks have been evaluated. As described by Rohrer SGA have been divided into symmetrical retarded and asymmetrical retarded newborns using ponderal index. Therefore distribution of ponderal index on our local population has been analysed. SGA more often had an Apgar score below 6 five minutes post partum (p = 0.01) and their mothers more often announced abuse of nicotine during pregnancy. AGA hav

Expanded Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention to Address Premature Mortality.

IMPORTANCE: Alcohol use is a leading cause of premature mortality in the US. Despite public health recommendations and insurance coverage mandates, alcohol screening and brief intervention (ASBI) in primary care remains underused. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the population-level impact of expanded ASBI delivery on alcohol use and potential years of life lost (YLL) from major alcohol-related causes of death in US adults through 2030, by sex, race and ethnicity, and educational attainment as a proxy for socioeconomic status. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a decision analytical study th

Joint association of objective and subjective aging with premature mortality.

Objective and subjective aging indicators reflect diverse biological and psychosocial processes, yet their combined association with premature mortality remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association between a multidomain framework of aging indicators and premature mortality, addressing gaps in understanding cumulative effects. We included 369,741 UK Biobank participants initially free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer, followed until December 31, 2022. Four indicators, hearing loss, tooth loss, falls and subjective aging, were counted, and their joint associat

Uncovering Risk Factors of Premature Mortality in Common Variable Immunodeficiency.

BACKGROUND: Among patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), patients with complications of immune dysregulation (CVIDc) have higher mortality rates than those with infection-only presentation (CVIDio). Therefore, identifying predictive markers of premature mortality among patients with CVIDc is crucial. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this retrospective exploratory study was to describe the mortality in a large tertiary referral center and compare the clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients with CVIDc who died prematurely with a group of matched living CVIDc control patient

[Prediction of mortality in premature neonates. An updated systematic review].

INTRODUCTION: Extreme prematurity is associated with high mortality rates. The probability of death at different points in time is a priority for professionals and parents, and needs to be established on an individual basis. The aim of this study is to carry out a systematic review of predictive models of mortality in premature infants that have been published recently. METHODS: A double search was performed for article published in PubMed on models predicting mortality in premature neonates. The population studied were premature neonates with a gestational age of ≤30 weeks and / or a weight

Premature mortality related to United States cross-state air pollution.

Outdoor air pollution adversely affects human health and is estimated to be responsible for five to ten per cent of the total annual premature mortality in the contiguous United States1-3. Combustion emissions from a variety of sources, such as power generation or road traffic, make a large contribution to harmful air pollutants such as ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5)4. Efforts to mitigate air pollution have focused mainly on the relationship between local emission sources and local air quality2. Air quality can also be affected by distant emission sources, however, including emissio

Preterm Delivery in Relation to Neighbourhood-Level Adult Premature Mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of neighbourhood-level adult premature mortality on a woman's risk of preterm delivery (PTD). METHODS: We included 286 872 singleton live birth deliveries in Toronto, Ontario, between 2002 and 2011. The study exposure was neighbourhood premature mortality rate, expressed in quintiles (Q), among adults aged 20 to 49 years living within each of Toronto's 140 neighbourhoods. The primary study outcome was PTD at 24 to 36 weeks' gestation. Logistic regression analysis generated unadjusted ORs, adjusted ORs, and 95% CIs, controlling for maternal age, parity, marit

Association of Serum Albumin Level and Mortality in Premature Infants.

BACKGROUND: Hypoalbuminemia has been proven to be a powerful predictor of mortality in adult patients. However, prognostic value of serum albumin in neonates is not clear. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between serum albumin level within the first day of life and outcome in preterm infants born before 32 weeks of gestation. METHODS: The study was conducted prospectively in Baskent University Hospital between October 2008 and November 2009. Patients were divided by gestational age into two groups as below or of 28 weeks and above 28 weeks. Then serum albumin percentile groups were esta

Deprivation (im)mobility and cause-specific premature mortality in Scotland.

A common approach for measuring geographical inequalities in health has been to calculate deprivation scores for small areas and then to aggregate these into quintiles. Mortality rates may then be compared for the highest and lowest deprivation quintiles at two points in time and the change in the difference between the rates determines the extent to which inequalities have widened or narrowed. This 'period-specific' approach to measuring inequalities is problematic both because deprivation calculated at different points in time is not directly comparable, and because the boundaries of the are

Role of sex in morbidity and mortality of very premature neonates.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sex on survival and short-term outcomes of very low-birthweight infants (VLBWI) born in Japan. METHODS: This study included VLBWI who were admitted to neonatal intensive care units participating in the Neonatal Research Network of Japan, between 2003 and 2012. The primary outcome was a composite of mortality or any major morbidity, including neurologic injury, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), or retinopathy of prematurity requiring treatment. RESULTS: The composite primary outcome was worse i

Quantifying the economic impact of premature mortality from cirrhosis in Spain.

OBJECTIVES: Excessive alcohol consumption is a major contributor to illness and mortality on a global scale. Per-capita alcohol consumption rose from 5.5 litres in 2005 to 6.4 litres in 2016 and is projected to reach 7.6 litres by 2030. In 2019, alcohol was associated with roughly a quarter of all cirrhosis-related deaths worldwide. The aim of this study is to assess the economic impact of premature mortality due to cirrhosis in Spain. METHODS: To estimate the economic impact of premature mortality due to cirrhosis, we utilized the human capital method. This method involved collecting data on

Reducing Premature Mortality in the Mentally Ill Through Health Promotion Programs.

Nearly half of the U.S. adult population will have a major mental illness during their lifetimes. At any point in time, almost a fifth of all American adults have a serious mental illness (SMI). Too many in our society do not understand mental illnesses, placing the blame for the illness on those with the illness, resulting in isolation, marginalization, or incarceration of individuals with SMIs. They may experience stigma, inadequate and delayed health and mental health care, and major socioeconomic disadvantages. They may struggle with activities of daily living, lose many of their resources
