The efficacy of permethrin-treated Olyset Net mosquito nets in preventing transmission and morbidity of malaria was studied in Kafine, a village in the rice-growing region of the Cote d'Ivoire. Entomological data demonstrated that permethrin-treated mosquito nets failed to reduce transmission of malaria. Laboratory tests showed that Anopheles gambiae s.s. in Kafine were resistant to permethrin and other pyrethroids. Study included a cohort of 163 children under five years of age who did or did not use mosquito nets. The number of patients seeking treatment for malaria attacks with fever was re

The effect of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITMNs) on Japanese Encephalitis (JE) virus seroconversion in pigs and humans was studied in Assam, Northeast India. A sharp reduction of seroconversion rate in human and pig was found in treated localities after intervention. A marked reduction was achieved in humans (risk ratio [RR] = 0.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.16-0.49) and pigs (RR = 0.21, CI = 0.11-0.40) in the Kollolua locality where ITMNs were used on both humans and pigs compared with the other two area, Athabari and Rajmai, where ITMNs were covering only either humans or pigs.

Pyrethroid resistant malaria vectors are widespread throughout sub-Saharan Africa and new insecticides with different modes of action are urgently needed. Pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone mimic that reduces fecundity and fertility of adult Anopheles mosquitoes when used as a contact insecticide. A long-lasting insecticidal net incorporating pyriproxyfen is under development. As wild, host-seeking females may succeed in blood-feeding at different intervals after initial contact with mosquito nets the aim of this study was to determine the effect that age and gonotrophic status (nulliparous or

A marketing company conducting a consumer omnibus survey (COS) in April 2000 was paid to include questions about household ownership of mosquito nets. At the time of the survey, which involved 5018 respondents, most and perhaps all of the nets owned by the respondents would have been untreated, as a product for net treatment was then virtually unavailable. Sampling was conducted in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Core questions were asked about socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics, and commissioned questions were asked about household net ownership, the

Background Synthetic mesh is the most efficient way to repair groin hernias. However, many patients in low and middle-income countries cannot afford the above-mentioned mesh. This study's goal was to describe the mosquito net mesh's (MNM) safety, viability, complications, and recurrence rate in hernioplasty done in rural populations. Material and methods This study was a single-centre, prospective, descriptive study, conducted in patients >18 years of age, of either gender, with unilateral or bilateral primary inguinal hernias (reducible/irreducible/bilateral hernia), admitted for elective or

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets are the primary method of preventing malaria. To remain effective, the pyrethroid insecticide must withstand multiple washes over the lifetime of the net. ICON(®) Maxx is a 'dip-it-yourself' kit for long-lasting treatment of polyester nets. The twin-sachet kit contains a slow-release capsule suspension of lambda-cyhalothrin plus binding agent. To determine whether ICON Maxx meets the standards required by the World Health Organization Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES), the efficacy and wash fastness of ICON Maxx was evaluated against wild, free-flying an

BACKGROUND: Many countries across sub-Saharan Africa are rapidly increasing insecticide-treated net (ITN) coverage to combat malaria, but systematic data on the use of those ITNs and the factors affecting this use are scarce.
METHODS: A household survey was conducted during malaria season in 23 communities of Amhara and Oromia Regional States, Ethiopia, stratified by degree of urbanization (rural, peri-urban, or urban), whether or not they received indoor residual spraying (IRS), and whether or not free nets had been distributed. Descriptive statistics as well as univariate and multivariate l

In order to prevent the resistance of Anopheles gambiae s.l. to pyrethroids from spreading too quickly and to lengthen the effectiveness of insecticide impregnated mosquito nets, it has recently been suggested to use mixtures of insecticides that have different modes of action. This study presents the results obtained with tulle mosquito nets treated with bifenthrin (a pyrethroid) and chlorpyrifos-methyl (an organophosphorous) both separately and in mixture on two strains of An. gambiae, one sensitive to all insecticides, and the other resistant to pyrethroids. The values of KDt50 and KDt95 an

Recent large-scale field trials show that mosquito nets impregnated with insecticide can substantially reduce all-cause mortality in children in malaria-endemic areas in Africa. This paper considers the cost-effectiveness of impregnated nets, initially from the perspective of a government programme which would distribute nets free of charge and organize and fund re-impregnation on an annual basis. The calculations show that with the reductions in all-cause mortality observed in the trials, complete government subsidy of nets through a vertical programme would represent an efficient use of scar

During recent years, long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) have been developed to overcome the problems of low retreatment rates, washing, and erratic dose of the insecticide resulting in the dilution of efficacy of the conventional insecticide-treated mosquito nets. These nets are treated at factory level with insecticide either incorporated into or coated around fibers. Olyset net, a polyethylene net with 2% permethrin incorporated within fibers, is one type of LLIN. Therefore, these nets were evaluated for their wash resistance and bioefficacy against malaria vectors Anopheles culic

INTRODUCTION: Malaria ranks as the fifth leading cause of death from infectious diseases globally. Despite centuries of scientific advancement, malaria remains a major global health challenge, affecting populations across 91 countries and placing millions at risk each year. Nigeria accounts for 27% of the global malaria burden. However, this burden is highest in the northern parts of the country. Bauchi State contributed an estimated 4.5% of Nigeria's 68 million malaria cases in 2021.
METHODS: This study employs an extended susceptible-infected-recovered model for humans and a susceptible-inf

The study assessed the operational feasibility and acceptability of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) in one Primary Health Centre (PHC) in a falciparum malaria endemic district in the state of Orissa, India, where 74% of the people are tribes and DDT indoor residual spraying had been withdrawn and ITNs introduced by the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme. To a population of 63,920, 24,442 ITNs were distributed free of charge through 101 treatment centers during July-August 2002. Interview of 1,130, 1,012 and 126 respondents showed that the net use rates were 80%, 74% and 5

BACKGROUND: Advances in digitized video-tracking and behavioural analysis have enabled accurate recording and quantification of mosquito flight and host-seeking behaviours, facilitating development of individual (agent) based models at much finer spatial scales than previously possible.
METHODS: Quantified behavioural parameters were used to create a novel virtual testing model, capable of accurately simulating indoor flight behaviour by a virtual population of host-seeking mosquitoes as they interact with and respond to simulated stimuli from a human-occupied bed net. The model is described,

Long-lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) are central to malaria prevention, but their effectiveness is threatened by the increasing pyrethroid resistance and low bed net utilization in malaria-endemic regions globally. This study formulates a genotype-specific compartmental model accounting for malaria transmission. It incorporates the blocking and insecticidal killing effects of LLINs, and pyrethroid-induced fitness costs, to evaluate the impact of LLIN utilization on malaria and resistance dynamics. Reproductive numbers with and without LLINs were derived, and sensitivity analysis performed. Th

BACKGROUND: In low-resource countries, a suture repair is still in common use due to the limited access to commercial mesh implants. The search for less expensive alternatives to the synthetic meshes has led to using mosquito nets. Sterilized mosquito net appears to be a low-cost and commonly available product that closely resembles commercially available meshes. However, the extent to which sterilization alters the structure of mosquito nets is still unknown. The aim of this research was to assess the effects of different sterilization types on physico-mechanical properties of mosquito nets.

Malaria continues to pose a significant public health challenge in Cameroon, requiring effective prevention strategies. Long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) are widely distributed as a key control measure, but their physical integrity and effectiveness need to be monitored. This study aimed to assess the condition and bio-efficacy of LLINs in 2 regions of Cameroon, namely Santchou in the West and Bertoua in the East. The study evaluated LLIN use and care using a structured questionnaire, following World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for assessing physical integrity. Bio-efficac

BACKGROUND: Although long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the most effective tool for preventing malaria parasite transmission, the nets have some limitations. For example, the increase of LLIN use has induced the rapid expansion of mosquito insecticide resistance. More than two persons often share one net, which increases the infection risk. To overcome these problems, two new mosquito nets were developed, one incorporating piperonyl butoxide and another covering ceilings and open eaves. We designed a cluster randomized controlled trial (cRCT) to evaluate these nets based on the informa

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) as one of the main interventions to control malaria spread. The leading driver of this intervention is use of ITN; however, socio-demographic characteristics factors, access and possession of ITN could also influence its usage. Therefore, the present study aimed to document the factors associated with using ITNs to eliminate malaria in Burkina Faso. This study's findings would be useful to the National Malaria Control Programme and other stakeholders engaged in the promotion of ITNs to fight malaria c

A new approach is proposed in the treatment of mosquito nets, using a 'two-in-one' combination of pyrethroid and non-pyrethroid insecticides applied to different parts of bednets. The objectives are mainly to overcome certain limitations of pyrethroid-impregnated bednets currently recommended for malaria control purposes. Apart from developing alternatives to pyrethroid dependency, we sought to counteract pyrethroid irritant effects on mosquitoes (excito-repellency) and resistance to pyrethroids. The idea takes advantage of the presumed host-seeking behaviour of mosquitoes confronted by a net

Consistent use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) for malaria prevention has been a challenge undermining the intervention's effectiveness. Perceptions of heat and absence of mosquitoes are among the reasons cited for non-use of ITN in populations with access. We conducted repeated household surveys across seasons in Ondo State of Nigeria to investigate seasonal changes in ITN use rates and potential determinant factors. Five household surveys were conducted in different months before an ITN distribution campaign in December 2021 followed by post-campaign surveys in April 2022, and in June, Au
