Ultra-dense Motion Capture: An exploratory full-automatic approach for dense tracking of breast motion in 4D.

Understanding the dynamic deformation pattern and biomechanical properties of breasts is crucial in various fields, including designing ergonomic bras and customized prostheses, as well as in clinical practice. Previous studies have recorded and analyzed the dynamic behaviors of the breast surface using 4D scanning, which provides a sequence of 3D meshes during movement with high spatial and temporal resolutions. However, these studies are limited by the lack of robust and automated data processing methods which result in limited data coverage or error-prone analysis results. To address this i

Two-Layer Ultra-Wideband Localization: Scalability for Dense Wearable Motion Capture.

A recurrent challenge in scaling ultra-wideband (UWB) motion-capture systems is interference management when many ranging transactions coexist in time and space. To address this, we study a two-layer localization architecture that separates field-level player localization from local on-body pose tracking, allowing the two tasks to operate with different communication regimes and spatial-reuse policies. A stochastic-geometry framework is used to map sport-dependent parameters, including player density, field size, tag count, anchor count, update rates, and ranging airtime, to reliability and up

Peristaltic Motion in Structurally Adaptive Molecular Crystals Enables Selective Propyne Capture.

Cyclotetrabenzoin and its tetraacetate, two macrocyclic porous molecular crystals, were examined as adsorbents for light hydrocarbons, with a focus on C3 hydrocarbons: propane, propene, and propyne. While both materials exhibit a preference for propyne, only the tetraacetate─owing to its higher surface area (570 vs. 42 m2 g-1), enhanced uptake capacity (1.99 vs. 1.19 mmol g-1), and faster kinetics─achieves dynamic binary separation of propyne from propylene under ambient conditions and various influent ratios (1/1, 1/2, and 2/1, v/v). The high propyne selectivity and separation trends were exp

Low-frequency earthquakes track the motion of a captured slab fragment.

Accurate tectonic models are essential for assessing seismic hazard and fault interactions. However, the plate configuration at the complex Mendocino triple junction, where the San Andreas Fault and the Cascadia subduction zone meet, remains uncertain. We analyzed fault slip associated with a recently identified zone of tectonic tremor and low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) near the southern edge of the subducting Gorda slab. Based on tidal sensitivity and P-wave first motions, we show that the LFEs are generated by dipping, strike-slip motion. This suggests that a former Farallon slab fragment,

A motion capture protocol for the kinematic analysis of transfemoral and transtibial sprinters.

Optimizing performance and safety in sprinters with lower-limb amputation requires standardized methods. This study presents a novel marker-based motion capture protocol to define local coordinate systems and Cardan sequences for in-vivo analysis of running biomechanics in athletes with transfemoral (TF) and transtibial (TT) amputation. The protocol provides detailed definitions and shares computational codes, supporting prosthetists and coaches in optimizing prosthetic setups. Moreover, integrating in-vivo biomechanics data into in-vitro and in silico experiments could lead to safer, more eff

Hip-ROM-Y: An open IMU and motion capture dataset for hip joint range-of-motion analysis.

The diagnosis and rehabilitation assessment of hip disorders require high-quality data that can reflect the true range of joint motion. However, most existing public datasets focus on gait scenarios, have limited angle coverage, and lack time-aligned joint angle and action labels. Therefore, we constructed and released the Hip-ROM-Y dataset, which includes 16 healthy male participants performing 6 characteristic hip ROM actions across 3 anatomical planes. During data collection, 8 wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) were used to record acceleration, angular velocity, and orientation-rel

Shoulder motion during tennis serve: dynamic and radiological evaluation based on motion capture and magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: Rotator cuff and labral lesions in tennis players could be related to posterosuperior internal impingement or subacromial impingement during tennis serve. However, it is unknown which of these impingements are responsible for the lesions found in the tennis player's shoulder. Moreover, there is a lack of validated noninvasive methods and dynamic studies to ascertain impingement during motion. METHODS: Ten intermediate or ex-professional tennis players were motion captured with an optical tracking system while performing tennis serves. The resulting computed motions were applied to pa

A new method for synchronization of motion capture and plantar pressure data.

A common plantar pressure analysis technique requires dividing the pressure distribution into regions based on key landmarks of the foot. Typically, this is done using visual inspection of the footprint and is subject to error when there is abnormal foot contact. A novel, robust method of synchronizing motion capture and plantar pressure data was created that allows for motion capture markers to be projected onto the plantar pressure mat for accurate subdivision of the foot. Validation studies showed that spatial synchronization of the plantar pressure and motion capture systems was determined

Gait biomechanics change during pregnancy and postpartum measured using markerless motion capture.

Sixty-five percent of pregnant women experience lower extremity musculoskeletal pain and 27 % fall during pregnancy. The risks of pain and falls during pregnancy may be elevated by compensatory gait biomechanics that result from hormonal and musculoskeletal changes like weight gain and postural adjustment. Using markerless motion capture to quantify these unique biomechanics will expand our understanding of the musculoskeletal changes that occur throughout pregnancy and help clinicians manage such risks. We measured gait biomechanics in 46 pregnant patients during early pregnancy (12 weeks), l

Markerless motion capture provides repeatable gait outcomes in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Motion analysis has seen minimal adoption for orthopaedic clinical assessments. Markerless motion capture solutions, namely Theia3D, address limitations of previous methods and provide gait outcomes that are robust to clothing choice and repeatable in healthy adults. Repeatability in orthopaedic populations has not been investigated and is important for clinical utility and adoption. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the repeatability of Theia3D for gait analysis in a knee osteoarthritis population. Ten orthopaedic patients with knee osteoarthritis underwent gait analysis on three visi

Tongue and jaw movement assessed by 3D motion capture during gum chewing.

INTRODUCTION: The tongue plays an important role in mastication, swallowing, and articulation, but it cannot be directly observed because of its location inside the oral cavity. This study aimed to clarify detailed 3D tongue movements during chewing using electromagnetic articulography (EMA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants were 10 healthy, young volunteers (average age 26.8 ± 2.1 years; 5 males, 5 females). Tongue and jaw movement during gum chewing was measured and recorded using EMA. Four EMA sensors were attached to the anterior, posterior, left, and right surfaces of the tongue,

IMU Motion Capture Method with Adaptive Tremor Attenuation in Teleoperation Robot System.

Teleoperation robot systems can help humans perform tasks in unstructured environments. However, non-intuitive control interfaces using only a keyboard or joystick and physiological tremor reduce the performance of teleoperation. This paper presents an intuitive control interface based on the wearable device gForcePro+ armband. Two gForcePro+ armbands are worn at the centroid of the upper arm and forearm, respectively. Firstly, the kinematics model of the human arm is established, and the inertial measurement units (IMUs) are used to capture the position and orientation information of the end

Towards remote monitoring of Parkinson's disease tremor using wearable motion capture systems.

The management of movement disorders is shifting from a centralized-clinical assessment towards remote monitoring and individualized therapy. While a variety of treatment options are available, ranging from pharmaceutical drugs to invasive neuromodulation, the clinical effects are inconsistent and often poorly measured. For instance, the lack of remote monitoring has been a major limitation to optimize therapeutic interventions for patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD). In this work, we focus on the assessment of full-body tremor as the most recognized PD symptom. Forty PD and twenty two heal
