Sober housing and motivational interviewing: the Treatment Access Project.

This paper describes an innovative program that provides rental subsidies for sober housing and supportive services to persons in early recovery who are homeless and have substance use disorders. Preliminary data point to the success of this program in enhancing recovery and exiting from homelessness. In supporting sober house placements, the Treatment Access Project creates a bridge that supports these individuals in their transition from clinical treatment services to the community. Integration with natural community supports can help to build self-efficacy, which can enhance the likelihood

Teaching Physicians Motivational Interviewing for Discussing Weight With Overweight Adolescents.

PURPOSE: We tested whether an online intervention combined with a patient feedback report improved physicians' use of motivational interviewing (MI) techniques when discussing weight with overweight and obese adolescents. METHODS: We randomized 46 pediatricians and family physicians and audio recorded 527 patient encounters. Half of the physicians received an individually tailored, online intervention. Then, all physicians received a summary report detailing patient's weight-related behaviors. We coded MI techniques and used multilevel linear mixed-effects models to examine arm differences. W

Strength of commitment language in motivational interviewing and gambling outcomes.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the mechanisms by which the motivational interview (MI) is an effective treatment for pathological gambling. Forty MIs with pathological gamblers were transcribed and coded for language content and strength of expression. As hypothesized, participants who expressed stronger commitment to change their gambling behavior during the MI exhibited better gambling outcomes over 12 months than did those who expressed weaker commitment or no commitment to change their gambling behavior during the MI. Contrary to expectation, commitment strength in the lat

Motivational Interviewing Enhances Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety Disorders.

This pilot study tested whether the addition of motivational interviewing (MI) prior to group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety may improve the effectiveness of the treatment. Prior to group CBT, 40 individuals with a principal diagnosis of an anxiety disorder (40% panic disorder, 25% generalized anxiety disorder, 22.5% social phobia, and 12.5% others) were randomly assigned to receive either three individual sessions of MI or were assigned to a control group that did not receive MI. The pretreatment MI group, compared to the control group, experienced significantly greater reduct

Toward an Emerging Role for Motivational Interviewing in Primary Care.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Implementing Motivational Interviewing (MI) in primary care settings has been problematic due in part to persistent gaps in knowledge. Examples include poor understanding of how to effectively train persons to conduct MI, or of which aspects of MI-related communication are associated with better outcomes for patients. This review describes how recent research findings addressing the knowledge gaps support a growing role for MI in primary care. RECENT FINDINGS: Two trials of MI training combined classroom time with ongoing coaching and feedback, resulting in enhanced MI abil

Assessing treatment fidelity in a cultural adaptation of motivational interviewing.

The efficacy of motivational interviewing (MI) for addictions is well documented. Grounding MI in social/cultural priorities may enhance treatment response. We evaluate the method of assessing competence using the motivational interviewing treatment integrity system (MITI) for standard MI and culturally adapted MI (CAMI) delivered to Latino heavy drinkers. Twenty audiotapes (MI, n = 10; CAMI, n = 10) were MITI coded by two raters unaware of treatment assignment. Inter-rater reliabilities were excellent (.78-.99) except for CAMI complex reflections, global ratings of empathy, and MI spirit. The

Motivational interviewing workshop in a virtual world: learning as avatars.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Limited research has been done to understand outcomes of continuing medical education offered in three-dimensional, immersive virtual worlds. We studied a case of a virtual world workshop on motivational interviewing (MI) applied to smoking cessation counseling and its educational impact. METHODS: To facilitate content development and evaluation, we specified desired MI competencies. The workshop consisted of three sessions, which included lectures, practice with standardized patients, and chat interactions. Data were collected from 13 primary care physicians and re

Preconceptional motivational interviewing interventions to reduce alcohol-exposed pregnancy risk.

Alcohol exposed pregnancy (AEP) is a leading cause of preventable birth defects. While randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that multi-session motivational interviewing-based interventions reduce AEP risk, a one-session intervention could facilitate broader implementation. The purposes of this study were to: (1) test a one-session motivational AEP prevention intervention for community women and (2) compare outcomes to previous RCTs. Participants at risk for AEP (N=217) were randomized to motivational interviewing+assessment feedback (EARLY), informational video, or informational broc

Introduction to the special series on motivational interviewing and psychotherapy.

Clinical and research applications of motivational interviewing (MI) have grown at a remarkable pace over the past 25 years. Most of this work has targeted the addictions and health-related behaviors. The series of articles in this issue highlight a rapidly accelerating recent trend: the application of MI to other problems typically seen in clinical practice. This introductory article describes MI, its core principles, treatment methods, and the variety of ways in which it has been employed. The 6 case reports in this issue are then described. They illustrate how MI can be employed with genera

Integration of Motivational Interviewing and Self-Affirmation Theory into a Culturally Adapted Motivational Interview: A Case Study.

Annually, alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use are responsible for the 11.8 million deaths worldwide, exceeding the number of deaths from all cancers (Ritchie & Roser, 2018). Motivational Interviewing (MI), a person-centered addiction counseling approach (Miller & Rollnick, 2013), is designed for those with low motivation to change. MI is presumed to minimize client defensiveness by avoiding confrontation. Culturally adapting evidence-based treatments such as MI may reduce alcohol-related health disparities among Latinx adults. A completed randomized trial tested the relative efficacy of Cul

A Motivational Interviewing Intervention by Pharmacy Students to Improve Medication Adherence.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with comorbid hypertension (HTN) are at a higher risk of developing microvascular and macrovascular DM complications. Through guideline-driven recommendations, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are highly recommended for these patients. Unfortunately, medication adherence to these products, though crucial to achieving therapeutic benefit, is frequently suboptimal. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered collaborative communication style that is used to strengthen internal motivat

Motivational Interviewing to Reduce Substance Use in Adolescents with Psychiatric Comorbidity.

Substance use among adolescents with one or more psychiatric disorders is a significant public health concern. In this study, 151 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents, ages 13-17 with comorbid psychiatric and substance use disorders, were randomized to a two-session Motivational Interviewing intervention to reduce substance use plus treatment as usual (MI) vs. treatment as usual only (TAU). Results indicated that the MI group had a longer latency to first use of any substance following hospital discharge relative to TAU (36 days versus 11 days). Adolescents who received MI also reported le

The Impact of Motivational Interviewing on Delinquent Behaviors in Incarcerated Adolescents.

The impact of Motivational Interviewing (MI) on risky behaviors of incarcerated adolescents and adults has been investigated with promising results. Findings suggest that MI reduces substance use, improves motivation and confidence to reduce use, and decreases risky behaviors. The current study investigated the impact of MI on general, alcohol-related, and marijuana-related delinquent behaviors in incarcerated adolescents. Participants in the study were incarcerated adolescents in a state correctional facility in the Northeast region and were assessed as part of a larger randomized clinical tr

Change talk and relatedness in group motivational interviewing: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Change talk (CT), or client speech in favor of change, is a hypothesized mechanism of action in motivational interviewing (MI) for substance use disorders. Although group-based treatment is the primary treatment modality for the majority of clients seeking substance use treatment, limited research has examined group motivational interviewing (GMI) among this population, and no study has examined CT within GMI. Therefore, in the current study we examined both standard CT (e.g., desire, ability, reason, need) and a novel phenomenon involving CT which we termed 'relatedness,' or the s

Imaginal desensitisation plus motivational interviewing for pathological gambling: randomised controlled trial.

Sixty-eight individuals were randomised to either six sessions of imaginal desensitisation plus motivational interviewing (IDMI) or Gamblers Anonymous. Individuals assigned to IDMI had significantly greater reductions in Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale Modified for Pathological Gambling total scores, gambling urges and gambling behaviour. People who failed to respond to Gamblers Anonymous reported significantly greater reduction in pathological gambling symptoms following later assignment to IDMI. Abstinence was achieved by 63.6% during the acute IDMI treatment period.
