Somatotopic localization in cat motor cortex.

Punctate intracortical stimulation of the motor cortex (areas 4 and 6), with parallel observation of the induced movements, permits description of a fine somatotopic organization of the motor control areas for different parts of the musculature in freely moving adult cats. The results show that movements produced by electrical stimulation of the motor cortex are always single and non-repetitive, regardless of the duration and intensity of the stimulation. These movements are restricted to a very precise part of the musculature, and experiments show that this localization is related to the exac

Motor Cortex Stimulation for Facial Pain.

Motor cortex stimulation (MCS) has been used in the treatment of intractable neuropathic facial pain for nearly 30 years. While efficacy rates have been noted as high as 88% in some studies, considerable variability in treatment response remains. Additionally, MCS is often cited as providing diminishing relief over time, and there are few long-term studies on efficacy. Complications are generally mild and include infection, hardware complication, seizure, and transient neurological deficit. Despite relatively minimal use, MCS remains a viable treatment option for the appropriately selected fac

[Triad TMS of Human Motor Cortex].

To study cortical excitability changes induced by external stimulation with a certain rhythm, we developed a new method using motor evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the primary motor cortex. In this method, three conditioning TMS with the intensity below the motor threshold are given prior to the supra-threshold test stimulus with the four TMSs were separated by a certain interval (triad-conditioning stimulation: TCS). In healthy volunteers, MEP facilitation was elicited at an interval of 25ms, whereas TCSs with other intervals induced no facili

Motor cortex stimulation for intractable pain.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: An altered growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-I (GH/IGF-I) axis occurs in advanced liver cirrhosis, characterised by diminished serum levels of IGF-I and increased concentrations of GH. Under normal conditions, GH release is mediated by somatostatin (SS) inhibition. However, the influence of SS on GH release in cirrhosis is not well known. IGF-I supplementation has beneficial effects in experimental cirrhosis, and - under physiological conditions - IGF-I increases SS, inhibiting GH. The aims of this work were to study SS tone in cirrhotic animals and to evaluate whether

Motor cortex retains and reorients neural dynamics during motor imagery.

The most prominent characteristic of motor cortex is its activation during movement execution, but it is also active when we simply imagine movements in the absence of actual motor output. Despite decades of behavioural and imaging studies, it is unknown how the specific activity patterns and temporal dynamics in motor cortex during covert motor imagery relate to those during motor execution. Here we recorded intracortical activity from the motor cortex of two people who retain some residual wrist function following incomplete spinal cord injury as they performed both actual and imagined isome

Neuroplasticity in the motor cortex following the achievement of sufficient motor learning.

Skilled motor training causes the cortical representation of the trained body parts to expand into regions of the motor cortex related to other body parts. However, the effect of neuroplastic changes on the neurons originally existing within the expanded area is not well understood. In this study, the extent of the neuroplastic changes after achieving sufficient motor learning and the impact of the expansion on the neurons related to movements of other body parts were investigated. Rats were trained to perform a single-pellet retrieval reaching task, and intracortical microstimulation in the m

Transcranial stimulation of the motor cortex to produce motor-evoked potentials.

Monitoring of the nervous system using evoked potentials is a developing tool. A new evoked potential, the motor-evoked potential (MEP), based on a traditional test, uses brain stimulation to monitor the motor system. The MEP complements the existing modalities, which are wholly sensory. The MEP can be prompted by direct stimulation of the motor cortex, but, in a more general way, by transcranial stimulation. Electric or magnetic means can be used. One electric system involves placement of an electrode on the scalp over the motor cortex, paired with a cathodal plate on the roof of the hard pal

Somatosensory responses in a human motor cortex.

Somatic sensory signals provide a major source of feedback to motor cortex. Changes in somatosensory systems after stroke or injury could profoundly influence brain computer interfaces (BCI) being developed to create new output signals from motor cortex activity patterns. We had the unique opportunity to study the responses of hand/arm area neurons in primary motor cortex to passive joint manipulation in a person with a long-standing brain stem stroke but intact sensory pathways. Neurons responded to passive manipulation of the contralateral shoulder, elbow, or wrist as predicted from prior st

Location of the primary motor cortex in schizencephaly.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Functional reorganization of the brain can result from congenital brain disorders as well as from brain infarction. The purpose of our study was to use functional MR imaging to determine whether reorganization of brain function occurs in patients with schizencephaly. METHODS: Four patients with schizencephaly (three right-handed, one ambidextrous) presented with seizures. Associated lesions included agenesis of the corpus callosum (n = 1) and absence of the septum pellucidum (n = 1). Functional MR imaging was performed in each patient using a single-section fast low-an

The left parietal cortex and motor attention.

The posterior parietal cortex, particularly in the right hemisphere, is crucially important for covert orienting; lesions impair the ability to disengage the focus of covert orienting attention from one potential saccade target to another (Posner, M. I. et al., Journal of Neuroscience, 1984, 4, 1863-1874). We have developed a task where precues allow subjects to covertly prepare subsequent cued hand movements, as opposed to an orienting or eye movement. We refer to this process as motor attention to distinguish it from orienting attention. Nine subjects with lesions that included the left pari

Learned Motor Patterns Are Replayed in Human Motor Cortex during Sleep.

Consolidation of memory is believed to involve offline replay of neural activity. While amply demonstrated in rodents, evidence for replay in humans, particularly regarding motor memory, is less compelling. To determine whether replay occurs after motor learning, we sought to record from motor cortex during a novel motor task and subsequent overnight sleep. A 36-year-old man with tetraplegia secondary to cervical spinal cord injury enrolled in the ongoing BrainGate brain-computer interface pilot clinical trial had two 96-channel intracortical microelectrode arrays placed chronically into left

A systematic review of non-motor rTMS induced motor cortex plasticity.

Motor cortex excitability can be measured by single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can induce neuroplastic effects in stimulated and in functionally connected cortical regions. Due to its ability to non-invasively modulate cortical activity, rTMS has been investigated for the treatment of various neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, such studies revealed a high variability of both clinical and neuronal effects induced by rTMS. In order to better elucidate this meta-plasticity, rTMS-induced changes in mo

A redrawn map for the human motor cortex.

The human brain’s motor cortex is often regarded as a linear map with discrete sections, each controlling different parts of the body. The discovery that portions of the motor cortex have other functions points to a different type of map.

Triad TMS of the human motor cortex.

Usually, cortical rhythmic activities are studied with local field potentials. To overcome small amplitude of EEGs easily disturbed by several factors, we developed a new method to study motor cortical rhythm using Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). We, here, review triad-conditioning TMS technique for investigating the intrinsic rhythm of the human primary motor cortex (M1). MEP was recorded from the first dorsal interosseous muscle (FDI). TMS was applied over the M1 to study its frequency dependency. In the intervention condition, the subthreshold, sam

Physiology of the motor cortex in polio survivors.

We hypothesized that the corticospinal system undergoes functional changes in long-term polio survivors. Central motor conduction times (CMCTs) to the four limbs were measured in 24 polio survivors using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Resting motor thresholds and CMCTs were normal. In 17 subjects whose legs were affected by polio and 13 healthy controls, single- and paired-pulse TMS was used to assess motor cortex excitability while recording from tibialis anterior (TA) muscles at rest and following maximal contraction until fatigue. In polio survivors the slope of the recruitment cu

A larynx area in the human motor cortex.

The map of the human motor cortex has lacked a representation for the intrinsic musculature of the larynx ever since the electrical stimulation studies of Penfield. In addition, there has been no attempt to localize this area using neuroimaging techniques. Because of the central importance of laryngeal function to vocalization, we sought to localize an area controlling the intrinsic muscles of the larynx by using functional magnetic resonance imaging and to place this area in a somatotopic context. We had subjects perform a series of oral tasks designed to isolate elementary components of phon

The functional properties of barrel cortex neurons projecting to the primary motor cortex.

Nearby neurons, sharing the same locations within the mouse whisker map, can have dramatically distinct response properties. To understand the significance of this diversity, we studied the relationship between the responses of individual neurons and their projection targets in the mouse barrel cortex. Neurons projecting to primary motor cortex (MI) or secondary somatosensory area (SII) were labeled with red fluorescent protein (RFP) using retrograde viral infection. We used in vivo two-photon Ca(2+) imaging to map the responses of RFP-positive and neighboring L2/3 neurons to whisker deflectio

Motor cortex excitability in acute cerebellar infarct.

Limited evidence to date has demonstrated changes in excitability that develops over the contralateral motor cortex after a cerebellar infarct. As such, the present study investigated changes in excitability over the contra- (contraM1) and ipsilateral motor cortices (ipsiM1), in patients with acute cerebellar infarct, to determine whether the changes may have functional relevance. Paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation, combined with detailed clinical assessment, was undertaken in ten patients presenting with acute unilateral cerebellar infarct. Studies were undertaken within 1 week of

Motor cortex disinhibition in normal-pressure hydrocephalus.

OBJECT: Previous studies have shown a close association between frontal lobe dysfunction and gait disturbance in idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). A possible mechanism linking these impairments could be a modulation of corticospinal excitability. The aim of this study was 2-fold: 1) to determine whether iNPH affects corticospinal excitability; and 2) to evaluate changes in corticospinal excitability following ventricular shunt placement in relation to clinical outcome. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with iNPH were examined using single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic st
