Motor Skills in Intellectually Gifted Children: A Neuropsychological Investigation.

Researches on motor skills in intellectually gifted children (IGC) are Insufficient to establish a clear profile of their motor functioning and understanding their potential needs. This study aimed to characterize motor skills in 30 IGC (Intelligence Quotient ≥130) compared with 35 typically developing children (TDC) with an intelligence level in the average range, aged from 6 to 16 years. A thorough theory-driven exploratory examination of motor skills was carried out to explore distinct components described in the cognitive models of apraxia. Results of IGC were compared with those of TDC fo

Influence of disability type on upper-limb motor skills.

This study was carried out in order to determine the effect of physical disability (paraplegia) and sensory disability (deafness) on motor skills of the upper limbs. Studies were distinguished by two parameters: the nature of the control curve (sine or random) and the magnitude of the isometric force exerted on the lever (10 N, 20 N, 40 N, 80 N). A comparison of the quality of manual force control in a visual detection task among groups of people with sensory disability (deaf), people with physical disability (paraplegic) and people without disability showed differences among those groups. Capacity to improve fine motor skills in Williams syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) are known to have difficulties in carrying out fine motor movements; however, a detailed behavioural profile of WS in this domain is still missing. It is also unknown how great the capacity to improve these skills with focused and extensive practice is. METHOD: We studied initial performance and learning capacity in a sequential finger tapping (FT) task in WS and in typical development. Improvement in the FT task has been shown to be sleep dependent. WS subjects participating in the current study have also participated in earlier polysomnogr

Relationship between skill training and skill transfer through the example of bimanual motor learning.

Skill training aims to improve the performance of the task at hand and aims to transfer the acquired skill to related tasks. Both skill training and skill transfer are part of our everyday lives, and essential for survival, and their importance is reflected in years of research. Despite these enormous efforts, however, the complex relationship between skill training and skill transfer is not yet portrayed completely. Building upon two theories, we probed this relationship through the example of bimanual learning with a large cross-sectional design (N = 450) using an online framework. We design

Using a Sequential Skills Training Model to Increase Oral-Motor Skills for Consuming Table-Textured Foods.

Background: Quantifying tumor-stroma architecture on routine hematoxylin and eosin slides may refine risk stratification in bladder cancer (BCa). We developed a convolutional neural network to segment whole-slide images, compute the mixed tumor-stroma ratio (MTSR), evaluate its prognostic value across multicenter cohorts, explore underlying molecular programs through multi-omics analysis, and construct a preoperative multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) radiomics model to estimate MTSR noninvasively. Methods: The ResNet50 convolutional network was customized using The Cancer Genome Atlas BCa slides lab

Individual differences in motor timing and its relation to cognitive and fine motor skills.

The present study investigated the relationship between individual differences in timing movements at the level of milliseconds and performance on selected cognitive and fine motor skills. For this purpose, young adult participants (N = 100) performed a repetitive movement task paced by an auditory metronome at different rates. Psychometric measures included the digit-span and symbol search subtasks from the Wechsler battery as well as the Raven SPM. Fine motor skills were assessed with the Purdue Pegboard test. Motor timing performance was significantly related (mean r = .3) to cognitive meas

Alterations in the thickness of motor cortical subregions after motor-skill learning and exercise.

Behavioral manipulations such as housing in an enriched environment have been shown to increase brain weight and visual cortical thickness. The present study was designed to test whether skill learning or repetitive movements can alter the thickness of the motor cortex. One group of 6-mo-old Long-Evans female rats learned motor skills on an obstacle course that increased in difficulty over training and required balance and coordination. A second group ran voluntarily in exercise wheels attached to their home cage but had little opportunity for skill learning. The third group was handled daily

The early motor milestones in infancy and later motor skills in toddlers: a structural equation model of motor development.

The relationship between the achievement of early motor milestones in infancy and later motor development was studied in 130 children with (N = 66, 35 male/31 female) and without (N = 64, 31 male/35 female) familial risk for dyslexia. A structured parental questionnaire was used to assess motor development in infancy, and the Movement Assessment Battery for Children was used to assess motor skills at age 3.5 years. No differences were found at the group level and therefore the structural equation model was constructed by entering both groups simultaneously. An Early Body Control factor, comput

FRONTAL AND PARIETAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO PROPRIOCEPTION AND MOTOR SKILL LEARNING.

Motor skill learning is the process of developing new movements with practice until they can be performed automatically. This necessitates the interaction of high-level cognitive processes with low-level sensorimotor mechanisms. Skill learning involves not only changes in the motor system but also proprioception (position sense). Proprioceptive deficits increase variability and decrease accuracy of movement. The somatosensory cortex, where low-level proprioception is processed, is known to play a role in motor skill learning, but the involvement of higher-level proprioceptive regions is unclea

The effect of altered hand position and motor skills on stereognosis.

PURPOSE: Poor stereognosis has been considered to be indicative of abnormal cerebral sensory function, and therefore a relative contraindication for upper extremity surgery in hemiplegic cerebral palsy. The effect of hand position and motor function on stereognosis has not been studied; decreased hand mobility can decrease a person's ability to recognize objects in the hand and can be an important component of stereognosis. METHODS: Twenty-one normal subjects had their nondominant arm positioned to simulate the hemiplegic hand posture of forearm pronation and wrist and digital flexion. Subjec

The contribution of motor skills and playfulness to the play performance of preschoolers.

Consideration of a child's motor proficiency, intrinsic motivation, internal locus of control, and freedom to suspend many of the constraints of objective reality were proposed to provide a more comprehensive assessment of play than would an assessment of play performance alone. For empirical validation of this conceptual model of play, 29 subjects (15 nondisabled children and 14 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis) between the ages of 4 years 6 months and 6 years 6 months were given four assessments: (a) the Preschool Play Scale (Bledsoe & Shepherd, 1982, Knox, 1974); (b) the Bruinink

Concurrent validity of the Gardner Test of Visual-Motor Skills.

Scores on the Test of Visual-motor Skills, Developmental Test of Visual-motor Integration, and Bender-Gestalt test were compared for a sample of 44 elementary school children referred for evaluation of learning disorders. While the tests shared common variance, the mean standard score on the Test of Visual-motor Skills was significantly lower than the means of the other two tests, suggesting caution in the clinical use of the new scale.

Characterizing the Motor Skills in Children with Specific Language Impairment.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Specific language impairment (SLI) is characterized by deficits in language ability. However, studies have also reported motor impairments in SLI. It has been proposed that the language and motor impairments in SLI share common origins. This exploratory study compared the gross, fine, oral, and speech motor skills of children with SLI and children with typical development (TD) to determine whether children with SLI would exhibit difficulties on particular motor tasks and to inform us about the underlying cognitive deficits in SLI. METHODS: A total of 13 children with SLI (age

TMS enhances retention of a motor skill in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: In Parkinson's disease (PD), skill retention is poor, even when acquisition rate is generally preserved. Recent work in normal subjects suggests that 5 Hz-repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (5Hz-rTMS) may induce phenomena of long-term potentiation at the cortical level. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: We thus verified whether, in PD, 5Hz-rTMS enhances retention of a visuo-motor skill that involves the activity of the right posterior parietal cortex. METHODS: A group of patients with PD was tested in two two-day sessions, separated by one week (treatment and placebo sessions). The

Language and motor speech skills in children with cerebral palsy.

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to investigate associations between the severity of motor limitations, cognitive difficulties, language and motor speech problems in children with cerebral palsy. Also, the predictive power of neonatal cranial ultrasound findings on later outcome was investigated. For this purpose, 36 children (age range 1 year 10 months to 9 years 0 months) with cerebral palsy due to premature birth and white-matter damage (periventricular leukomalacia) participated in the study. Twenty-two children (62%) had an intelligence level above 70. One-half of this group exhibited

Apraxia and motor-skill acquisition in Alzheimer's disease are dissociable.

Many patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) are apraxic and the apraxia has been posited to be related to a loss of movement representations. Whereas patients with Alzheimer's disease have been reported to demonstrate normal motor learning on a rotor pursuit skill acquisition task, it is unknown whether AD subjects who are apraxic demonstrate normal skill-learning. We tested subjects with probable AD and normal controls on a rotor pursuit task. We also tested the AD subjects for ideomotor apraxia. Subjects with AD who were apraxic had normal motor learning. In addition, praxis score did not co

Pitching-specific facilitation of upper-limb corticospinal excitability during motor imagery of sports motor skills.

Pitching is an essential skill in baseball, requiring precise and well-coordinated neural control. However, elucidating its underlying neural mechanisms remains challenging because of the methodological difficulties in assessing neural activity during dynamic movement. Motor imagery (MI) provides a potential approach for investigating neural control in pitching, as MI of basic movements activates neural processes similar to those during actual movement. This study examined how MI of pitching, with and without visual guidance, modulates corticospinal excitability in muscles involved in pitching

Neural correlates of fine motor grasping skills: Longitudinal insights into motor cortex activation using fNIRS.

BACKGROUND: Motor learning is essential for performing specific tasks and progresses through distinct stages, including the rapid learning phase (initial skill acquisition), the consolidation phase (skill refinement), and the stable performance phase (skill mastery and maintenance). Understanding the cortical activation dynamics during these stages can guide targeted rehabilitation interventions. METHODS: In this longitudinal randomized controlled trial, functional near-infrared spectroscopy was used to explore the temporal dynamics of cortical activation in hand-related motor learning.
