INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: We aimed to characterise motor performance in predominantly Aboriginal children living in very remote Australia, where rates of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are high. Motor performance was assessed, and the relationship between motor skills, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and PAE was explored.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Motor performance was assessed using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-Second Edition Complete Form, in a population-based study of children born in 2002 or 2003 living in the Fitzroy Valley, Western Australia. Composite scores ≥2SD

BACKGROUND: To evaluate a school-based pilot intervention combining fundamental movement skills (FMS) training and action observation and motor imagery (AOMI) for gross motor skills and executive function in developmental coordination disorder (DCD).
METHODS: In this pilot randomized controlled trial, 20 children with DCD were randomized to an experimental group (FMS plus AOMI, n = 10) or an active control group (FMS plus video-based physical activity education). Both groups completed sessions three times per week for 10 weeks. Gross motor skills were assessed using the Test of Gross Motor De

This study examined the differences between children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and neurotypically developing (NTD) in terms of balance, postural control, and motor skills. It also examined which motor skills are most affected and whether scores on different assessment tests in ASD children are correlated. A cross-sectional observational study with two research groups was conducted. Timed up and go test (TUG), short form of Bruininks-Oseretsky test of Motor Proficiency version 2 (SFBOT-2), and pediatric balance scale (PBS) were used. A total of 100 participants 50 with

BACKGROUND: Motor milestones such as the onset of walking are important developmental markers, not only for later motor skills but also for more widespread social-cognitive development. The aim of the current study was to test whether gross motor abilities, specifically the onset of walking, predicted the subsequent rate of language development in a large cohort of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
METHODS: We ran growth curve models for expressive and receptive language measured at 2, 3, 5 and 9 years in 209 autistic children. Measures of gross motor, visual reception and autism

Our aim in this study was to affirm or negate (quantitatively) our subjective impression of altered hands and knees crawling (H&K crawling) among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Through parental questionnaires and children's health records, we retrospectively compared early motor skills, including the frequency of H&K crawling in 79 children with Autistic Disorder or Asperger Syndrome versus 100 children with typical development (TD). We found H&K crawling to be significantly less frequent among children with ASD (44.2%) versus children with TD (69%). Children with ASD also showe

Background: Motor skills in early and middle childhood are essential for physical play, social interactions, and academic development. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit atypical sensory responses, which can impact self-care and other developmental areas. This study explores the impact of sensory and motor rehabilitation using a Motor Sensory Room to stimulate motor development in children with ASD. Methods: Twenty-five children with ASD, preschool and school-aged (2-10 years), were divided into three groups based on the DSM-5 severity levels. The PEP-3 scale was used t

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) comprise a broad category of neurodevelopmental disorders that include repetitive behaviors and difficulties in social interactions. Notably, individuals with ASDs exhibit significant impairments in motor skills even prior to the manifestation of other core symptoms. These skills are crucial for daily activities, such as communication, imitation, and exploration, and hold significant importance for individuals with ASDs. This review seeks to offer new insights into the understanding of motor skill impairments by delineating the pathological mechanisms underlyin

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) show relative weaknesses on rhythm tasks beyond their characteristic linguistic impairments. The current study compares preferred tempo and the width of an entrainment region for 5- to 7-year-old typically developing (TD) children and children with DLD and considers the associations with rhythm aptitude and expressive grammar skills in the two populations. Preferred tempo was measured with a spontaneous motor tempo task (tapping tempo at a comfortable speed), and the width (range) of an entrainment region was measured by the difference betwee

BACKGROUND: School failure or poor academic performance is often found in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD); however, there is a dearth of a comprehensive assessment tool to evaluate various underlying deficits, including perceptual-motor, cognitive, language, and scholastic skills of those who have NDD. The study aimed to develop a test to fill-up this gap.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study followed three phases: the construction of an assessment battery in both Bengali and English languages, separately, incorporating tasks on perceptual-motor, cognitive, language, and scholastic skills; doi

BACKGROUND: Anxiety affects approximately 40% to 50% of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet evidence-based nonpharmacological interventions remain limited. Trampoline exercise, which combines vestibular stimulation and aerobic activity, may offer dual benefits by reducing anxiety and improving motor skills in this population. To examine the effects of an 8-week trampoline exercise program on anxiety, motor performance, and physiological outcomes (heart rate variability, HRV) in children with mild-to-moderate ASD.

BACKGROUND: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is characterized by difficulties in motor coordination and is highly comorbid with one or more neurodevelopmental disorders. Multiple studies report that DCD is associated with prenatal and perinatal risk factors for brain damage. However, few studies have examined the role of clinical characterization in DCD.
METHODS: To examine this, 22 participants were enrolled in the study (9 females; mean (M) age: 2 months to 6.6 ± 0.6 years). All of them were diagnosed with DCD, comorbid with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, specific learni

Interventions based on everyday motor skills have been developed to be effective in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of motor skill training on exercise tolerance and cardiorespiratory fitness in children with DCD. Children were assigned to 3 groups: an experimental training group comprising 14 children with DCD, a control nontraining group comprising 13 children with DCD, and a control nontraining group comprising 14 typically developed children. All participants were tested twice with an interval of 8-weeks o

The introduction of food textures in a child's first 2 years of life plays a vital role in growth, nutrition, and feeding development. However, the absence of a standardized texture framework for studying texture progression limits both pediatric feeding research and the ability to diagnose pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) based on age-appropriate expectations. To address this gap, authors Delaney and Goday proposed data sharing from the Nestlé Feeding Infant-Toddler Study (FITS) to explore texture progression and define age-appropriate texture expectations. In response, Nestlé assembled a mul

The aim of this paper was to analyze the acute and chronic effects of physical activity (PA) on cognition, behavior, and motor skill in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), taking into account potential confounders. In addition, it was intended to elaborate a guide of educational applications with strategies for PA use. Studies were identified in four databases from January 2010 to June 2023. A total of 19 interventional studies met the inclusion criteria. PA programs ranged from two weeks to one year in duration, with a frequency of one to five sessions per week. More than 58% of the st

Dyslexia and Attention deficit disorder (AD) are prevalent neurodevelopmental conditions in children and adolescents. They have high comorbidity rates and have both been associated with motor difficulties. Little is known, however, about what is shared or differentiated in dyslexia and AD in terms of motor abilities. Even when motor skill problems are identified, few studies have used the same measurement tools, resulting in inconstant findings. The present study assessed increasingly complex gross motor skills in children and adolescents with dyslexia, AD, and with both Dyslexia and AD. Our r

This study aimed to examine the effects of parent-child coparticipation in physical activity (PA) on the PA levels and fundamental motor skills (FMSs) of children with autism spectrum disorder. Participants were assigned to one of the following three groups: (a) a parent-child group (n = 14), (b) a child group (n = 13), and (c) a control group (n = 13). After 8 weeks of intervention, the within-group comparison revealed a significant increase in PA levels and FMSs in children with autism spectrum disorder in the parent-child group and the child group (p < .001). The between-group comparison fu

Purpose This case-control study sought to determine if (a) children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), other speech sound disorders (SSDs), and typical development would perform differently on a procedural learning assessment and (b) whether grammatical ability would impact group differences. Method Communication, motor, and procedural learning abilities were assessed in 48 children with CAS (n = 13), SSD (n = 20), and typical development (n = 15), between 43 and 97 months of age (M = 66 months, SD = 12 months). Results On average, children with CAS demonstrated grammatical and motor impa
