Fibrolipomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms of the fatty tissue rarely encountered in the oral cavity. They account for around 1% to 5% of all neoplasms affecting the mouth and occur as raised, slow-growing, painless lesions of normal or yellow coloration and uncertain etiology. In contrast, mucus retention cysts are epithelium-lined cavities originated from a salivary gland. They are also raised, asymptomatic, slow-growing lesions, located on the floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa and lips. This article reports a diagnostic and a surgical treatment of a rare fibrolipoma case associated with

Swelling of the floor of the mouth is sometime difficult to diagnose clinically. Lithiasis and neoplasm are the most frequent causes of intraoral swelling. Also after plain radiology and computed tomography the diagnosis is often dubious. A case of swelling of the floor of the mouth due to an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the sublingual gland is reported.

Prediction of future suffering could improve palliative care. To identify the factors contributing to physical symptoms, a prospective study was performed on two series of hospice inpatients with cancer (n = 150 and n = 200, respectively). Physical symptoms, patients' characteristics, and tumor locations were recorded using a structured protocol on admission and throughout the clinical course. Common symptoms on admission and during the patient's course were pain (65%, 88%), general malaise (58%, 77%), anorexia (57%, 94%), constipation (33%, 71%), dyspnea (33%, 66%), nausea/vomiting (29%, 48%)

Neoplasms in the infratemporal fossa (ITF) are rare and insidious lesions that cause various symptoms due to involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), paranasal sinuses, and orbit. Here, we report a case of metastatic non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma in the ITF. The patient presented with facial pain and limited mouth opening, which did not respond to treatment for TMJ disorder, and a neoplasm was discovered in the ITF through medical imaging. With an open biopsy, the diagnosis was finalized. This report suggested that the physician should consider lesions in the ITF when facial pain

Lipomas and hemangiomas are well-known benign lesions of the body. However, their occurrence in the oral cavity is rare. Lipoma accounts for 1-4% of benign neoplasms of mouth affecting predominantly the buccal mucosa, floor of mouth and tongue. Hemangiomas occur mostly on the lips, buccal mucosa, tongue, and palate. Lipomas when superficially placed show yellowish surface discoloration and hemangiomas usually have reddish blue to deep blue color. Here, we report an unusual case of benign tumor occurring in the buccal vestibule.

A nasal neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma) extending into the brain in a heifer produced mouth breathing and proptosis. The mass filled much of the left nasal cavity, palatine sinus and maxillary sinus, with turbinate atrophy and deviation of the septum. Caudally the neoplasm extended into the nasopharynx and olfactory bulb. It was a cellular neoplasm composed of small, undifferentiated piriform cells showing infrequent pseudorosettes and immature axonal processes. Mitosis was common is some areas.

This multi-institutional report describes 8 cases of rhabdomyosarcoma in horses. Four neoplasms were in the tongue and other areas of the mouth or head, 2 were in the abdominal wall, and 1 each was in right shoulder muscles and heart. Four rhabdomyosarcomas that were less than 10 cm in diameter were treated by surgical excision or radiation with no recurrence. Two neoplasms greater than 10 cm in diameter in the abdominal wall and the right shoulder were considered inoperable and led to decisions to euthanize the horses. Two neoplasms were incidental findings at necropsy. All the neoplasms were

Many malignant tumours other than squamous cell carcinoma may present in the oral cavity. Melanomas of the oral cavity are usually pigmented, aggressive tumours associated with a poor prognosis. Neoplasms of the minor salivary glands have a greater tendency to be malignant than those of the major glands, and some exhibit a predilection for occurring in the mouth. Many types of connective tissue malignant tumours (sarcomas) may arise in the mouth, including soft-tissue cancers and lesions of hematologic cells such as lymphoma, whereas osteosarcoma is the most common malignancy of the hard tissu

In this study slightly more than two out of every 100 biopsy specimens from the set population of 10,414 specimens showed malignant oral lesions. The most common sites for oral malignancy were the floor of the mouth and the alveolar ridge, respectively. Lesions were most common during the fifth decade of life, followed by the sixth. Eighty-eight percent of the malignant lesions occurred in whites and 12% inn blacks. This does not deviate significantly from the percentage in the total biopsies reported. Of the categories of neoplasms, surface ectodermal neoplasms predominated, followed by saliv

The indications of photodynamic therapy (PDT) of oral cavity and oropharynx neoplasms are not well defined. The main reason is that the success rates are not well established. The current paper analyzes our institutional experience of early stage oral cavity and oropharynx neoplasms (Tis-T2) to identify the success rates for each subgroup according to T stage, primary or non-primary treatment and subsites. In total, 170 patients with 226 lesions are treated with PDT. From these lesions, 95 are primary neoplasms, 131 were non-primaries (recurrences and multiple primaries). The overall response

Malignant sublingual gland neoplasms are rare, early-stage neoplasms presenting as painless non-ulcerated masses in the antero-lateral floor of the mouth. The majority of patients present with advanced disease, with symptoms of pain or anaesthesia of the tongue. Malignant minor salivary gland neoplasms are more common, the majority (>80%) of which present in the oral cavity, most frequently in the palatal area, as painless masses or as obstructive symptoms in the head and neck region. The most frequent pathologies are adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (>85%), with the major

Electron beam therapy with its high energy capabilities appears promising as a therapeutic modality in head and neck neoplasms. Over a 10-year period, 153 cases of head and neck neoplasms involving the alveolar ridge, floor of mouth, buccal mucosa, retromolar trigone, tonsil, parotid, tongue, and pharynx were treated. The pharyngeal group was removed from consideration because of the unsuitability of this lesion for single port therapy. Normal standard doses and time-dose fractions are included as a basis for treatment comparison, and the influence of stage on survival is noted. Survival and t

Basaloid-squamous cell carcinoma is a rare tumor characterized by Wain et al in 1986 as a separate pathological entity. In head and neck more than 100 cases have been reported, with a strong predilection for hypopharynx, base of tongue, and supraglotic larynx. This entity also has been described in nasal cavity, oesophagus, tonsils and oral cavity. Only 14 cases has been reported arising in the floor of the mouth, and none in our literature. We present a new case in floor of the mouth and clinicopathological features are emphasized. We have undertaken moreover a bibliographic review of this un

Spindle cell lipoma (SCL) is a benign lipomatous neoplasm typically located in the posterior neck and back of older males. It presents as a well-circumscribed mass in the buccal mucosa, tongue, floor of the mouth or hard palate. There are only two case reports of SCL in the gingiva and alveolar ridge. Here, we report a case of SCL in the mandibular mucogingival junction of a 68-year-old male. Clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings are presented. Although oral SCL is rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of spindle cell neoplasms occurring in the oral

A review of oral malignant neoplasms biopsies accessioned in the pathology services of Harare Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Hospital, Harare, Zimbabwe, during the 10year period January 1982 to December 1991 was carried out. Clinical records of 428 patients with histologically diagnosed oral malignant neoplasms by ICD-O type and site (COO.O-CO6.9) were retrieved and analyzed for gender, age, history of tobacco and alcohol usage, neoplastic type and histologic differentiation of squamous cell carcinoma (8000/3). Oral malignant neoplasms constituted 24.8% (n = 428) of the 1723 biopsies access

BACKGROUND: Multifocal nodular oncocytic hyperplasia (MNOH) is a rare lesion of the parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in MNOH has not been described previously to the best of our knowledge.
CASE: A 55-year-old woman presented with a lump at the left angle of her mouth for 2 months. Local examination revealed a hard, nontender parotid mass. FNAC revealed clusters as well as discretely lying oncocytic cells. cells at places showed moderate nuclear pleomorphism. The features were consistent with a diagnosis of oncocytic neoplasm neoplasm; however, because of pleomorphism, a s

A series of 145 patients with tongue and floor of mouth neoplasms is presented. Age, sex, TNM classification, lymph node presence or absence at the time of first visit and management protocols have been studied in each case. Management protocols have been divided into primitive tumor treatment (iridium and/or surgery) and lymph node treatment (radical surgery and radiotherapy). Results have been assessed considering tumoral stage and management scheme.

BACKGROUND: A solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the oral cavity is an extremely rare entity. Its diagnosis is complicated because of its diverse morphology and similarity to other mesenchymal diseases.
CASE REPORT: A rare case of SFT involving floor of the mouth is presented. The tumor was well circumscribed and almost spherical, measuring approximately 3 cm in diameter. Patient was submitted to biopsy and histopathologic examination showed a tumor composed of spindle to epithelioid cells showing pale to eosinophilic cytoplasm, oval or elongated nuclei with inconspicuous nucleoli. Tumor cells sh
