CONTEXT: Excessive spinal motion generated during multiple bed transfers of patients with unstable spine injuries may contribute to neurological deterioration.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate spinal motion in a cadaveric model of global spinal instability during hospital bed transfers using several commonly used techniques.
DESIGN/PARTICIPANTS: A motion analysis and evaluation of hospital bed transfer techniques in a cadaveric model of C5-C6 and T12-L2 global spinal instability. Setting/outcome measures: Global instability at C5-C6 and T12-L2 was created. The motion in three planes was measured in bo

Slide sheets are often stated to be the cause of hand and forearm injuries. While there are many other possible reasons injuries to nursing staff, carer and client occur, the most important linking factors relating to musculoskeletal disorders and manual handling of people is the ongoing inappropriateness or lack of suitably designed and equipped work areas. As physiotherapist Lynn Varcin-Coad writes, staff are bearing the brunt of inefficiencies of design and lack of high order risk control.

The growing need for efficient patient lifting and transfer solutions highlights a significant gap in current healthcare systems, particularly in affordable, accessible options for home use. While most research has focused on automated or motorised systems, this study introduces a novel manual patient lifting device based on a worm gear mechanism, which, despite its proven industrial benefits, remains underexplored in healthcare. Using a case study of a 50-year-old, 72 kg individual, we developed a cost-effective, manually operated lifting system aimed at reducing caregiver workload and improv

In order to implement preventive programs to prevent back pain in nurses, assessments of the degree of passivity and mobility of patients is imperative. After all, the load in health care ergonomics, is often the patient. The degree of cooperation or resistance determines the load on the back for the nurses and the necessity of the use of lifting devices like patient lifters or sliding sheets. These assessments must be done in both a practical and a reliable way. For this purpose a 3-category and a 5- category system to assess the degree of patient mobility and passivity was developed and test

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to perform a literature review and seek expert opinion on the relevance and strength of the evidence concerning setup and transfer performance.
METHODS: Scientific literature databases were searched until June 2009 using 43 keywords resulting in 339 articles. These were internally reviewed and narrowed to 41 articles which were formally assessed by 13 external experts. Articles that 80% or more of the reviewers scored as moderately or highly relevant were included in the final results.
RESULTS: Nineteen articles met the relevancy criteria. The aspects o

This study investigated the differences in required push, pull and rotating forces for moving fully loaded, floor-based and overhead-mounted full body patient lifting devices with simulated patients of varying weight on a floor of optimal design (i.e. level vinyl tile over concrete). A single person operated the lifting devices for all of the tests. Eighteen male and female volunteer participants, ranging in weight from 51 to 146 kg, acted as patients during the lifting tests. For each test, the simulated patients were pushed and pulled for 3.7 linear metres and were rotated while sitting in t

PURPOSE: Pressure ulcers (PUs) are prevalent among immobile bed or wheelchair-reliant individuals who experience prolonged sedentary positions. Pressure relief and frequent repositioning of body posture help to mitigate complications associated with PUs. Adherence with regular repositioning is difficult to maintain due to nursing labour shortages or constraints of in-home caregivers. Manual repositioning, transferring, and lifting of immobile patients are physically demanding tasks for caregivers. This review aimed to explore and categorize these devices, discuss the significant technical chal

ObjectiveTo investigate the biodynamics of human-exoskeleton interactions during patient handling tasks using a subject-specific modeling approach.BackgroundExoskeleton technology holds promise for mitigating musculoskeletal disorders caused by manual handling and most alarmingly by patient handling jobs. A deeper, more unified understanding of the biomechanical effects of exoskeleton use calls for advanced subject-specific models of complex, dynamic human-exoskeleton interactions.MethodsTwelve sex-balanced healthy participants performed three simulated patient handling tasks along with a refe

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of flooring type and resident weight on external hand forces required to push floor-based lifts in long-term care (LTC).
BACKGROUND: Novel compliant flooring is designed to reduce fall-related injuries among LTC residents but may increase forces required for staff to perform pushing tasks. A motorized lift may offset the effect of flooring on push forces.
METHOD: Fourteen female LTC staff performed straight-line pushes with two floor-based lifts (conventional, motor driven) loaded with passengers of average and 90th-percentile r

PURPOSE: Patient handling increases the risk of musculoskeletal complaints and diseases among healthcare workers. Thus, the use of small aids for patient handling is recommended. Small aids are non-electrical and handy assistive devices that support caregivers during patient handling. To date, there is no evidence about the clinical efficacy of small aids. Hence, the objective of this systematic review was to systematically analyze whether the use of small aids during patient handling leads to a decreased occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was car

This study measured the twist angle of the lumbar region and the surface electromyogram (EMG) and examined their mutual relation to elucidate the degree and influence of factors of "twist" in nursing techniques as a cause of lower back pain. Using a goniometer (two-way angle and twist sensors) and an EMG(SX230; DKH Co., Ltd.), we conducted measurements by affixing the goniometer on the lumbar vertebral column and EMG sensor at four points of right and left sides of L2 and L4 (of the erector muscle of the spine). The measured nursing techniques were three common methods of "transferring a patie

Due to improvements in biomedical sciences and clinical expertise, childhood mortality has decreased. Pediatric patients experience similar complications from inactivity as adults, such as hospital-acquired conditions and delirium. Interdisciplinary collaboration is imperative to improve functional and developmental outcomes of children who suffers from either a chronic illnesses or an acute illness that results in a prolonged hospitalization. Pediatric nursing assessments should include gross motor function related to mobility. Activities to mobilize pediatric patients should be based on age

BACKGROUND: Critically ill patients are at high risk for hospital-acquired pressure injury development due to immobility and hemodynamic instability. In the 24-bed Cardiac Intensive Care Unit within an academic medical center, registered nurses have multiple competing responsibilities and priorities that reduced consistency and quality of patient repositioning, including movement from bed to chair. An inconsistent repositioning/out-of-bed schedule can prompt hospital-acquired pressure injuries to bony prominences.
OBJECTIVES: To examine surface hospital-acquired pressure injury rates pre-post

INTRODUCTION: Bedrest is often used for temporary management, as well as definitive treatment, for many spinal injuries. Under such circumstances patients cannot remain flat for extended periods due to possible skin breakdown, blood clots, or pulmonary complications. Kinetic therapy beds are often used in the critical care setting, although this is felt to be unsafe for turning patients with spine fractures. We sought to evaluate whether a kinetic therapy bed would cause as much spinal motion at an unstable cervical injury as occurs during manual log-rolling on a standard intensive care unit b

Pressure injuries (PIs) originate beneath the surface of the skin at the interface between bone and soft tissue. We used diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) and diffuse near-infrared spectroscopy (DNIRS) to predict the development of PIs by measuring dermal and subcutaneous red cell motion and optical absorption and scattering properties in 11 spinal cord injury subjects with only nonbleachable redness in the sacrococcygeal area in a rehabilitation hospital and 20 healthy volunteers. A custom optical probe was developed to obtain continuous DCS and DNIRS data from sacrococcygeal tissue whil
