[Cutaneous mucinosis].

The cutaneous mucinoses are a heterogeneous group of diseases in which mucin accumulates in the skin or within the hair follicle. We divide the cutaneous mucinoses into two groups: the distinctive cutaneous mucinoses in which the mucin deposit is a distinctive histopathologic feature that manifests as a clinically specific lesion, and the diseases associated with histopathologic mucin deposition as an additional finding. This article deals with the clinical and histopathologic features and the treatment of the distinctive cutaneous mucinoses and updates their classification. They may be divide

Cutaneous mucinosis of infancy.

Cutaneous mucinosis is a term that has been used to describe a group of diseases or conditions in which accumulation of mucin in the skin is a prominent feature. The cutaneous mucinoses includes myxedema (both diffuse and localized), lichen myxedematosus (papular mucinosis), lipoid proteinosis, follicular mucinosis, cutaneous focal mucinosis, cutaneous myxoid cyst, and others. All of these diseases share distinct histologic features. I examined a 16-month-old infant with a case of cutaneous mucinosis that had unique clinical and histologic features, unlike any of the known mucinoses.

Unusual presentation of primary cutaneous mucinosis with Blaschkoid Hemibody distribution: case report.

Primary cutaneous mucinosis (PCM) is a rare condition characterized by dermal mucin deposition without systemic disease, thyroid dysfunction, or paraproteinemia. The following report details the case of a 25-year-old female patient who exhibited the presence of firm, flesh-colored nodules and plaques that were strictly confined to the right hemibody, distributed linearly along Blaschko's lines. Laboratory tests revealed no significant findings, and histological analysis confirmed the presence of abundant dermal mucin, as indicated by Alcian Blue staining within a normal epidermis. This strictl

Alopecia Mucinosa (Follicular Mucinosis) in a Dog.

Abstract- A 10-year-old male Labrador Retriever dog presented with alopecia and scaling that was extensive in the head and limb regions and patchy over the trunk. The major histopathological feature was degeneration of the outer root sheath with disruption of keratinocytes and formation of cystic spaces filled with mucin. A diagnosis of follicular mucinosis was made. This case report represents the first case of this syndrome in the canine species. Résumé- Un Labrador, mâle de 10 ans est présenté pour une alopécie squameuse, extensive, de la tête, des membres, et en "taches" sur le tronc. La l

Obesity-associated lymphedematous mucinosis and stasis mucinosis.

Cutaneous dermal mucinoses are a group of conditions characterized by abnormal deposition of mucin (hyaluronic acid and sulfated glycosaminoglycans) in the dermis. They can be classified either as localized or generalized forms and occur primarily or secondarily to systemic disorders. Obesity-associated lymphedematous mucinosis and pretibial stasis mucinosis are uncommon and relatively newly recognized disorders occurring in obese patients or in patients with venous insufficiency. Clinically, patients present with papules and nodules progressing to plaques and arising in an erythematous and ed

Self-healing localized cutaneous mucinosis.

A 54-year-old woman presented a lesion on the dorsum of the right hand. Routine laboratory tests were normal or negative. Histological examination revealed mucin deposits in the reticular dermis. The lesion cleared within 1 year without any treatment but biopsy. This case does not fit the diagnostic criteria of any known cutaneous mucinoses.

Nodular cutaneous mucinosis associated with lupus erythematosus.

Nodular mucin-containing skin lesions in a Mexican woman were present in conjunction with probable systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Histologically, the lesions contained features of both lupus erythematosus (LE) and of the mucin deposition diseases. The clinical subsets of LE and the mucinoses are briefly reviewed and the unique clinical nature of the skin lesions in this case are emphasized.

Cutaneous focal mucinosis arising from the chin.

Cutaneous focal mucinosis is a type of degenerative-inflammatory dermal mucinoses characterized with asymptomatic, single, dermal mucin deposition. Because of its rarity, it is often mistaken clinically for other disorders such as sebaceous cyst, fibroma, myxoma, and xanthoma. In this study, we will discuss a case of cutaneous focal mucinosis arising from the chin of a 27-year-old man.

Papular and Plaque-like Mucinosis in a Puppy.

Abstract- A case of a papular and plaque-like superficial dermal mucinosis with pruritus in a mixed-breed puppy is reported. The mucinosis and pruritus were non-responsive to glucocorticoid or antibiotic therapy and the dog was eventually euthanised at the owner's request. This type of mucinosis has not been reported in the dog to the authors' knowledge. It shares some similarities with discrete papular mucinosis and self-healing juvenile cutaneous mucinosis in people. Résumé- Un cas de mucinose dermique superficielle en plaque et papuleuse avec prurit chez un chiot croisé est décrit. La mucin

Discrete Papular Lichen Myxedematosus and Scleromyxedema with Hypothyroidism: A Report of Two Cases.

Scleromyxedema and lichen myxedematosus (LM) are rare disorders that fall along the spectrum of primary cutaneous mucinoses. Scleromyxedema is a systemic form that classically presents with generalized waxy papules, sclerodermoid eruption, and monoclonal gammopathy; LM is a localized form limited to the skin that classically presents with white, firm, waxy papules and lacks monoclonal gammopathy. According to diagnostic criteria established in 2001, the diagnosis of both conditions requires absence of thyroid disease. However, atypical cases that lack monoclonal gammopathy and that present wit

Self-healing infantile familial cutaneous mucinosis.

Childhood cutaneous mucinoses have been rarely reported and are difficult to classify. We describe two brothers who developed multiple, extensive cutaneous lesions during the first few months of life. Histologically the lesions were composed of mucin deposits in the dermis. In the first patient, the lesions spontaneously disappeared over the years. We believe that familial self-healing cutaneous mucinosis represents a unique entity not previously reported.

Discrete papular lichen myxedematosus: a rare entity or an under- diagnosed disease?

Primary cutaneous mucinoses are characterized by abnormal mucin deposits in the skin. Discrete papular lichenmyxedematosus (DPLM) is an unusual subtype which is characterized by the presence of multiples smooth, waxy, or flesh-colored papules, 2 to 5 mm in size affecting the trunk and limbs and most commonly proximal sites. We report a 42-year-old man with both the clinical and histopathological described criteria.

Periadnexal mucin as an additional histopathologic feature of chronic eczematous dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous mucinoses are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by an abnormal amount of mucin in the skin. However, the pathomechanism of an excessive mucin deposition in the skin is still unknown. Eczematous dermatitis is sub-classified histologically into acute, subacute, and chronic variants. The characteristic histopathologic findings for chronic eczema are variable. However, periadnexal mucin deposition is not known as a feature of chronic eczema. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of periadnexal mucin deposition in chronic eczematous dermatitis. METHODS: We analy

[Dermatological manifestations of monoclonal gammopathies: contribution of cutaneous histopathology].

Skin manifestations associated with monoclonal gammapathy are common and can present with various clinical and pathological aspects. They can be the first events leading to the diagnosis of monoclonal gammapathy. They may be present either as specific lesions, including lymphoplasmacytic or pure plasma cell neoplastic infiltrates and monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits, or as non-specific dermatitis, such as leukocytoclastic vasculitis, neutrophilic dermatoses, mucinoses or xanthomatosis, giving little clues for the diagnosis of the underlying disease.

Reticular erythematous mucinosis (REM) with telangiectasias associated with essential thrombocytosis and lung carcinoma.

The cutaneous mucinoses are a heterogeneous group of diseases in which mucin accumulates in the skin. Reticular erythematous mucinosis (REM) is an infrequent variant. We present a 48-year-old man with essential thrombocytosis and REM lesions with atypical telangiectasias on his chest, who developed a non-small cell lung carcinoma. We discuss the unusual clinical finding of telangiectasias over REM lesions and the association with essential thrombocytosis and lung carcinoma.

Lichen myxedematosus: a rare group of cutaneous mucinosis.

Cutaneous mucinoses are a heterogeneous group of dermatoses in which excess deposition of mucin in the dermis gives the skin a waxy appearance, with papules and plaques that can vary from self-healing mucinosis to even disrupting the normal shape of a patient's face, conferring a leonine facies, or be part of life threatening diseases like scleromyxedema. This review will describe the most recent classification on lichen myxedematosus in the generalized (scleromyxedema) and the localized forms, as well as the different organ systems involved in scleromyxedema, diagnostic workup, current manage
