Effect of Mud-Bath Therapy on Serum Biomarkers in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: Results from a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Balneotherapy is one of the most commonly used non-pharmacological approaches for osteoarthritis (OA). Recent data indicate that some biomarkers could be useful to predict OA progression and to assess therapeutic response. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of mud-bath therapy on serum biomarkers in patients with knee OA. METHODS: The study group comprised 103 patients with primary symptomatic bilateral knee OA who were randomly assigned to receive a cycle of mud-bath therapy over a period of 2 weeks or to continue their standard therapy alone. Clinical and biochemical parameter

[Electrophoresis of sulphide mud extract in combined therapy of chronic inflammatory diseases of uterine appendages (an experimental and clinical study)].

On the original experimental model of chronic inflammation of the ovaries and oviducts in white rats it was established that electrophoresis of 1% esobel solution prevents an increase in the specific volume of interstitial connective tissue, development of fibrosclerotic alterations and adhesive process. Peloidophysiotherapy normalizes growth and atresia of the ovarian follicular system. Thus, electrophoresis of 1% esobel solution is highly effective in combined treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases of the uterine appendages.

Comparative efficacy of mineral water and mud therapy vs standard rehabilitative interventions: a systematic review of osteoarthritis studies from 2000.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease, and despite extensive research, no disease-modifying drugs are currently available. Various rehabilitation approaches, natural healing factors, and curative agents are commonly used for osteoarthritis management. A key question remains whether treatments involving mud and mineral water therapies in resort-based sanatoriums are more effective than conventional rehabilitation procedures. To address this, we analyzed clinical trials since 2000 that compared the effects of balneotherapy and peloid therapy, either alone or in combination, with standar

One-year follow-up of mud-bath therapy in patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis: a randomized, single-blind controlled trial.

The objective of this prospective parallel randomized single-blind study was to assess that a cycle of mud-bath therapy (MBT) provides any benefits over usual treatment in patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis (OA). Patients with symptomatic primary bilateral knee OA, according to ACR criteria, were included in the study and randomized to one of two groups: one group received a cycle of MBT at spa center of Chianciano Terme (Italy) in addition to the usual treatment, and one group continued their regular care routine alone. Clinical assessments were performed 7 days before enrollment (sc

Neuroimmunomodulation induced by mud-bath therapy: clinical benefits and bioregulation of the innate/inflammatory responses induced by a peloid enriched with rosmarinic acid in elderly patients with osteoarthritis.

Balneotherapy using peloids (mud-bath therapy) is one of the most effective non-pharmacological approaches for managing osteoarticular and musculoskeletal disorders, such as osteoarthritis (OA). Recent studies have shown that peloids enriched with rosmarinic acid (RosA) enhance the therapeutic effects of mud therapy in elderly OA patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the normalization of the interaction between the hormetic stress response, mediated by cortisol, and the inflammatory response, mediated by IL-8 (measured in blood by ELISA), underlies the clinical benefits

[Peloid therapy in various temperature modes in rehabilitation of patients with seronegative spondylarthritis].

Fifty patients with ankylosing spondylarthritis (AS) and 21 patients with reactive arthritis, Reiter's disease received peloid therapy. AS patients with a prevalent spinal lesion received mud applications (38-40 degrees), those with a prevalent joint lesion - applications of colder mud (22-24 degrees C), those free of inflammation in the joints and periarticular tissues - mud of 38-40 degrees C temperature. In reactive arthritis and Reiter's disease mud applications with temperature 22-24 degrees are indicated.

Physicochemical characterization of sterilized muds for pharmaceutics/cosmetics applications.

Clays and muds have been used for centuries as cosmetics or pharmaceutical products for various therapies. The suitability of muds and clays for health- and beauty-related applications depends on their physicochemical properties, mineralogical composition, particle characteristics and toxicity. In this work, the physicochemical characterization of 12 mud specimens from different natural spa resorts in Greece and one from Israel (Dead Sea) is presented. All specimens were sterilized at 121 °C for 20 min, because of their intended use. The Greek mud specimens were collected from various location

Spa therapy and peripheral serotonin and dopamine function: a systematic review.

Spa therapy consists of multiple techniques based on the healing effects of water, including hydrotherapy, balneotherapy, and mud therapy, often combined with therapeutic exercises, massage, or physical therapy. Balneotherapy is a clinically effective complementary approach in the treatment of low-grade inflammation- and stress-related pathologies, especially rheumatic conditions due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The main objective of this investigation was to conduct a systematic review analyzing the available evidence on the effect of spa therapy on serotonin and dopamine function. Th

Innate/inflammatory bioregulation and clinical effectiveness of whole-body hyperthermia (balneotherapy) in elderly patients with osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Balneotherapy with mud application (mud therapy) is a common hydrothermal intervention for the treatment and rehabilitation of elderly patients with osteoarthritis, leading to anti-inflammatory effects. The main purpose of this investigation was to study a role for regulatory T cells in these anti-inflammatory effects. The second objective was to assess whether the neutrophil-mediated innate response is affected by these anti-inflammatory effects. METHODS: Thirty-six elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis underwent a 10-day cycle of balneotherapy at a spa center. They received

An Intelligent Virtual-Reality System With Multi-Model Sensing for Cue-Elicited Craving in Patients With Methamphetamine Use Disorder.

Methamphetamine abuse is getting worse amongst the younger population. While there is methadone or buprenorphine harm-reduction treatment for heroin addicts, there is no drug treatment for addicts with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). Recently, non-medication treatment, such as the cue-elicited craving method integrated with biofeedback, has been widely used. Further, virtual reality (VR) is proposed to simulate an immersive virtual environment for cue-elicited craving in therapy. In this study, we developed a VR system equipped with flavor simulation for the purpose of inducing cravings fo

Water-retentive and anti-inflammatory properties of organic and inorganic substances from Korean sea mud.

Sea mud has been popularly used as an effective base in cosmetic preparations although its biologically-active materials and mechanisms on skin have not yet been fully determined. We isolated humic substances as the major organic substance of the sea mud from a tidal flat in Korea, and investigated their water-retentive properties. Among the three isolated humic substances, humic acid (HA) showed the highest water retentive property (approximately 50 % mass increase from water uptake). Based on the observations that mud pack therapy has been traditionally used to soothe UV-irradiated skin, we
