AIMS: To report the long term follow up of children with antenatally detected unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) with documentation of complications, involution rate with time, and renal function at 10 years.
METHODS: Data were retrieved from a prospective regional registry of patients with MCDK between 1985 and 2004. Children were followed using a common protocol of investigation with follow up ultrasound scans (USS) at 2 (165 patients), 5 (117 patients), and 10 years (43 patients).
RESULTS: Serial USS showed that 33% of the MCDK kidneys had completely involuted at 2 years of a

Two infants with nonfunctioning antenatally detected multicystic dysplastic kidneys developed acute renal failure in conjunction with pelviureteric obstruction of the contralateral kidney at 9 and 14 months of age, respectively. The initial postnatal ultrasounds had shown mild pelvic dilatation in both cases. Clinicians need to be aware of the possibility of late obstruction. We suggest that it is good practice to review patients with antenatally detected urinary tract abnormalities and equivocal investigations at joint nephrouroradiology meetings.

The management of multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is controversial. There has been a shift from routine surgical removal to nonoperative management. However, recently, an argument has emerged with regard to the management of MCDK, with several studies recommending surgical removal. We report a case of pelvic MCDK that was diagnosed and subsequently removed by a laparoscopic procedure. A laparoscopic approach to the renal and pelvic areas is a minimally invasive, safe, and effective procedure to diagnose and treat MCDK. We believe that laparoscopic nephrectomy should be offered as a manage

OBJECTIVES: To better define the outcome and association of multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) with hypertension, vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR), infection and cancer, as there is no consensus on the management of patients born with MCDK. The risk of cancer has dictated the surgical management of the disease in the past.
METHODS: The Medline database was searched for articles published between 1965 and 2006 and written in the English language, and containing the keywords 'multicystic dysplastic kidney'.
RESULTS: The inclusion criteria were met by 105 reports that were subsequently analysed.

Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is one of the most common renal abnormalities in children. The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical course and outcome of patients with MCDK. Ninety pediatric patients with unilateral MCDK followed by the Pediatric Nephrology Department of Bakirkoy Maternity and Children's Hospital between 1990 and 2007 were included in this retrospective study. The dimercaptosuccinic acid radionuclide scan revealed no function in MCDK in all of our patients. Voiding cystourethrogram was performed in all patients. Twenty patients (22.2%) had abnormalities in the co

We performed a retrospective study of infants with unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) in order to investigate the associated urological abnormalities. We examined the records of seven patients, in five of whom a diagnosis had been made prenatally using ultrasonography. Our investigation focused on the associated urological abnormalities, particularly on the contralateral side, and the results of voiding cystourethrography (VCUG). Four of the seven patients (57%) had urological abnormalities other than MCDK: three exhibited vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) of the contralateral side incl

Risks of contralateral kidney abnormalities and chronic kidney disease necessitate follow-up for unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidneys (MCDK). A nationwide survey of senior UK pediatricians was conducted. Of the 60 responses obtained, 62% routinely perform a dimercaptosuccinic acid scan to confirm diagnosis. Eight percent routinely perform a cystogram to investigate contralateral vesicoureteric reflux. Sixty-two percent would routinely measure renal function (frequency ranging from once only to "every 2 years"). Twenty-five percent recalled MCDK nephrectomy being performed within the previ

Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is a congenital cystic kidney disease that can be incidentally seen during the antenatal ultrasound. The condition is most commonly asymptomatic. The clinical presentation is usually characterized by multiple small cysts or a single dominating cyst in the fetal kidney depending on the type of MCDK. Most cases undergo spontaneous involution, and complications like hypertension, infection, and malignancy are rare. We present the case of a young Primigravida who was diagnosed to have a fetus with unilateral MCDK in the second trimester and further followed up

BACKGROUND: To assess multicystic dysplastic kidneys (MCDK) in children, their complications and associated congenital genitourinary anomalies.
METHODS: Children with unilateral MCDK, evaluated between 2012 and 2020, were analyzed. In this retrospective study, data were obtained from electronic and paper health care records.
RESULTS: There were 80 children included. Follow-up time was 8.0 +/- 5.2 years (mean +/- standard deviation). None of them had hypertension. In total, 43.8% of the children had associated congenital genitourinary anomalies, most commonly cryptorchidism and vesicoureteral

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prenatal growth pattern of the normal kidney contralateral to a multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK).
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in a single referral center over 4 years. Cases diagnosed prenatally as MCDK and confirmed postnatally constituted the study group. For creation of nomograms, only isolated cases of MCDK were included.
RESULTS: Sixty-one fetuses had a diagnosis of an MCDK during the study period. After exclusion of cases with associated malformations, 47 fetuses remained, providing 94 measurements for creation of nomograms. The growth pat

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the clinical features of patients with multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK).
METHODS: The medical files of children diagnosed with MCDK between January 2008 and November 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. The demographic, clinical, laboratory and radiological data were evaluated.
RESULTS: Of 128 children with MCDK enrolled in the study, 82 (64.1%) were male, and 46 (35.9%) were female (P < 0.05). MCDK were located on left and right sides in 66 (51.6%) and 62 children (48.4%), respectively (P > 0.05). Antenatal diagnosis was present in 64 patients (50%). The mean age

BACKGROUND: We report the long-term follow-up of children with antenatally detected unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) who were followed between 1985 and 2009.
METHODS: Involution rates were documented over time based on the initial size of the MCDK, as documented on postnatal ultrasound (USS), as well as long-term complications and renal function.
RESULTS: In 323 patients (182 male), 10 % of MCDK had involuted, as evidenced on the first postnatal USS, with survival function analysis showing the probability of complete involution to be 35 % in 249 patients by 2 years of age, 47

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the sonographic involution of prenatally detected multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK).
METHODS: A total of 53 children with unilateral MCDK detected by prenatal ultrasonography between 1989 and 2004 were included in this analysis. All children received conservative management with follow-up visits every 6 months. Follow-up ultrasound examinations were performed at 6-month intervals during the first 2 years after birth and yearly thereafter. A linear mixed effect model was constructed, including MCDK length as the dependent variable and body size parameters and contral

Multicystic-dysplastic kidney (MCDK) disease has been associated with contralateral genitourinary tract abnormalities; however, neither the nature nor the prevalence of the contralateral renal lesion has been delineated. We retrospectively studied patients with MCDK disease to determine the prevalence of contralateral renal abnormalities and of other urologic anomalies. Forty-nine patients, ranging in age from neonates to 6 years, were examined by renal ultrasonography, excretory urography or nuclear medicine scanning, and voiding cystourethrography; 51% of the patients had an associated urolo

Multicystic renal dysplasia is an extremely uncommon cause of hypertension in children and the few reported cases have not been of newborns. We report on a neonate in whom severe hypertension associated with elevated peripheral plasma renin resulted from a unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney. Hypertension and plasma renin activity normalized after unilateral nephrectomy. No evidence of perfusion or excretory renal function in the dysplastic kidney was present on a radionuclide renal scan. This child demonstrates a relationship between hypertension and unilateral multicystic renal dysplasi

INTRODUCTION: Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MDK) is one of the most common congenital anomalies of the urinary tract and the main cystic renal disease in children. Our institution follow-up protocol of MDK uses, as has been performed more widely in the last two decades, a conservative attitude.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize MDK cases followed in our Outpatient Clinic of Pediatric Nephrology, evaluate their progress and reflect on the protocol adopted.
METHODS: 36 MDK patients observed between January 1995 and December 2009 were included in this retrospective study and followed-up. In 35 child

Ureteral quadruplication is a rare congenital anomaly of the urinary tract that is associated with other genitourinary malformations. Few cases have been reported worldwide, the majority being described in children. We report the first known case associated with contralateral multicystic dysplastic kidney.
