Multilingualism in Psychotherapists in Training in Germany: Results of a Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

Patients who speak languages other than those spoken by mental health professionals are significantly disadvantaged in mental health care settings. To bridge the communication gap, multilingual health professionals and professional interpreters are target-orientated solutions. This study was conducted to assess the multilingual resources, attitudes and needs of psychotherapist trainees in Germany. A cross-sectional nationwide online survey was conducted on psychotherapists-in-training. The 48-item survey consisted of a self-developed instrument to assess 'Attitudes towards working with an Inte

Direct and mediating effects of multilingualism on reducing perceived loneliness in the aging brain.

Amidst a rapidly aging global population, identifying life experience factors that sustain cognitive vitality and social resilience is a paramount scientific challenge. While multilingualism is frequently associated with the preservation of executive functions and the delayed onset of dementia, its potential benefits for social and emotional well-being remain underexplored. This study investigates the association between multilingualism and perceived loneliness, a critical determinant of health in older adults, and examines whether brain regions involved in social semantics mediate this link.

Six Arguments for Vygotskian Pragmatism in Deaf Education: Multimodal Multilingualism as Applied Harm Reduction.

Deaf education research and practice have not always lived up to the ideal of improving deaf students' lives. Consequently, we have constructed novel arguments supporting deaf pedagogy using pragmatic ethics, the aim of which is to increase benefit and decrease harm to individuals and society. The ideal of harm reduction asks the pragmatist to pursue the path of action least likely to result in injury to others. Besides applying ideas that reduce harm, educators must also increase benefits for deaf students. Our analysis synthesizes Vygotskian perspectives on deaf pedagogy and pragmatic ideals

Word definition as indicator of metalinguistic awareness in multilingual children.

One of the first papers to link metalinguistic awareness with third language learning was written by Jacqueline Thomas and published in the book "Cognitive processing by bilinguals". This article investigates how the phenomenon of metalinguistic awareness has been conceptualised over the last 30 years of research and aims at demonstrating the relationship and significance of metalinguistic awareness to (early) multiple language learning. Word definition and its suitability for assessing both linguistic proficiency and metalinguistic awareness in multilingual children will be discussed as a fai

Language instruction of deaf multilingual learners: a survey of teachers.

This study investigates the instructional practices and self-reported confidence of educators working with Deaf Multilingual Learners (DMLs), students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and come from homes where languages other than English or American Sign Language are used. Through a national web-based survey (Appendix A), data were collected from 89 current and former teachers of DMLs, capturing their demographic profiles, instructional strategies, and perceptions of their ability to support language development. Quantitative analyses, including descriptive statistics, t-tests, and correlation

An Early Reading Assessment Battery for Multilingual Learners in Malaysia.

The aim of the study was to develop a new comprehensive reading assessment battery for multi-ethnic and multilingual learners in Malaysia. Using this assessment battery, we examined the reliability, validity, and dimensionality of the factors associated with reading difficulties/disabilities in the Malay language, a highly transparent alphabetic orthography. In order to further evaluate the reading assessment battery, we compared results from the assessment battery with those obtained from the Malaysian national screening instrument. In the study, 866 Grade 1 children from multi-ethnic and mul

Multilingual approach to ICD10: on the need for a source reference database.

The distribution of ICD10 is of concern for thousand of developers in numerous countries. The absence of some basic features to facilitate the transfer and consequently to augment the quality of the delivered version is a constant characteristic. Errors, ambiguities, missing terms, unrecognised attributes are quite common, despite the efforts of some national centres doing their best to fill this gap. For other countries and languages, where such centres do not exist or do not have sufficient resources, this problem is even stronger. A reference ICD database is clearly a need today. The follow

A Qualified Multilingual Assessment for Medical Students: A Cohort Study.

Introduction Effective clinical communication is essential for delivering high‑quality care and directly impacts the safety of patients who prefer a non‑English language. However, no national standard exists for assessing oral non-English language skills among multilingual medical students in the United States. Methods From June 2024 to November 2025, medical students who self-reported "very good" or "excellent" oral proficiency in a non-English language were invited to complete the ALTA Speaking and Listening Assessment, a qualified multilingual assessment (QMA) used to verify skills for dire

The complexity in deaf and hard-of-hearing multilingual learner education.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing Multilingual Learners (DMLs) are Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are either born outside of the country they currently receive schooling in or have both parents born outside of that country, using a language other than the national spoken language at home. This group is growing in numbers and contributes significantly to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in Deaf education. This systematic review synthesizes findings from 17 peer-reviewed empirical studies, identifying four educational levels relevant to DMLs: context, organization, educators, and s

Professionals' Perspectives on Supporting Deaf Multilingual Learners and Their Families.

Parents frequently report that advice from professionals is important in making decisions about how their child with hearing loss will communicate. Little is currently known about how professionals support parents raising children with hearing loss in spoken language multilingual environments, children who are described as d/Deaf multilingual learners (DMLs). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gain insight into professionals' perspectives and experiences working with such families, particularly in relation to supporting parents in decision-making about multilingualism and langua

Impact of multilingualism on cardiac autonomic activity, working memory and trait anxiety: a pilot study.

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in how multilingualism modifies executive functions. Heart rate variability (HRV), a noninvasive and innocuous indicator of cardiac autonomic function, can also capture individual differences that link cognitive performance with physiological and emotional profiles. This pilot study aimed to analyze the association of multilingualism with cognitive, autonomic, and emotional regulation during working memory (WM) tasks, while also considering trait anxiety (Trait-A). Nineteen young adults were classified as a monolingual group (MON, N = 9) or a mult

Multilingualism (but not always bilingualism) delays the onset of Alzheimer disease: evidence from a bilingual community.

A recent paper by Bialystok et al in Neuropsychologia (vol. 45, pgs. 459 to 464) suggested that early bilingualism produced a statistically significant 4.1-year delay in onset of memory loss symptoms in older individuals with Alzheimer disease, possibly reflecting an increase in the cognitive reserve of these individuals. That study focused on multilingual elderly patients of whom 90% were immigrants. Our memory clinic, in Montreal Canada, has the advantage of having a large set of individuals who are either multilingual immigrants to Canada, or who are nonimmigrants but raised in both officia

Retrieval-grounded multilingual LLM assistance for island smallholder farmers.

BACKGROUND: Smallholder farmers on remote, depopulating islands have limited access to advisory services, and their locally specific agronomic knowledge, often expressed in regional dialect, is poorly represented in the corpora on which large language models are trained. A general-purpose chatbot therefore answers local questions fluently but unreliably. A conversational artificial intelligence assistant, Falco eleonorae, was developed for the farmers and cooperatives of Kythera and Antikythera, Greece. METHODS: The assistant is a thin Backend-for-Frontend proxy in front of a managed, geospat

Teachers' use of semiotic resources in the multimodal-multilingual language instruction.

Teaching newly immigrated deaf and hard-of-hearing multimodal-multilingual learners requires the flexible and adapted use of diverse semiotic resources. This study adopts a linguistic ethnography approach to examine how three teachers use various semiotic resources in classrooms where German and German Sign Language (DGS) are taught simultaneously. The study analyzes (a) which semiotic resources are employed and (b) how teachers jointly use them to support students' languages learning. The findings reveal that teachers commonly draw on DGS, written (and spoken) German, and further semiotic res

Lost in Translation: Multilingual Analysis of Online Breast Cancer Information.

INTRODUCTION: Patients use the internet to learn more about health conditions. Non-English-speaking patients may face additional challenges. The quality of online breast cancer information, the most common cancer in women, is uncertain. This study aims to examine the quality of online breast cancer information for English and non-English-speaking patients. METHODS: Three search engines were queried using the terms: "how to do a breast examination," "when do I need a mammogram," and "what are the treatment options for breast cancer" in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Managing linguistic obstacles in multidisciplinary, multinational, and multilingual research projects.

Environmental challenges are rarely confined to national, disciplinary, or linguistic domains. Convergent solutions require international collaboration and equitable access to new technologies and practices. The ability of international, multidisciplinary and multilingual research teams to work effectively can be challenging. A major impediment to innovation in diverse teams often stems from different understandings of the terminology used. These can vary greatly according to the cultural and disciplinary backgrounds of the team members. In this paper we take an empirical approach to examine s
