Transoral floor of mouth lipoma resection: A technical multimedia analysis.

Lipomas are common benign mesenchymal tumors that originate from mature adipocytes throughout the body, with 13-20% occurring in the head and neck region, however only 1-4.4% affect the oral cavity, where they are found predominately in the cheek, followed by the tongue, lips, palatal mucosa, gingiva, and floor of the mouth. Herein, we present a multimedia analysis of transoral floor of mouth lipoma resection in a 58-year-old female. Learning points include (1) Identification and stenting of Wharton's ducts in order to facilitate their functional preservation and to minimize risk of postoperat

[Computer-assisted multimedia interactive learning program "Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma"].

INTRODUCTION: Advances in the area of information technology have opened up new possibilities for the use of interactive media in the training of medical students. Classical instructional technologies, such as video, slides, audio cassettes and computer programs with a textbook orientation, have been merged into one multimedia computer system. The medical profession has been increasingly integrating computer-based applications which can be used, for example, for record keeping within a medical practice. The goal of this development is to provide access to all modes of information storage and r

The modality and redundancy effects in multimedia learning in children with dyslexia.

The present study aimed to examine the modality and redundancy effects in multimedia learning in children with dyslexia in order to find out whether their learning benefits from written and/or spoken text with pictures. We compared study time and knowledge gain in 26 11-year-old children with dyslexia and 38 typically reading peers in a within-subjects design. All children were presented with a series of user-paced multimedia lessons in 3 conditions: pictorial information presented with (a) written text, (b) audio, or (c) combined text and audio. We also examined whether children's learning ou

Use of the mobile phone multimedia messaging service for teledermatology.

We examined the feasibility of using mobile phone Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) to send teledermatology referrals from a general practitioner to a dermatologist. Digital photographs of skin conditions in 40 consecutive patients were sent together with relevant clinical information to dermatologists at a university hospital. Two dermatologists separately assessed the MMS referrals. The suspected diagnosis, triage and management decisions were compared to those given after separate face-to-face (FTF) visits, and again after agreeing on a final clinical and/or histopathological diagnosis. The effectiveness of a multimedia program to prevent fetal alcohol syndrome.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) continues to be the leading preventable cause of mental retardation in the United States. Because abstaining from alcohol prior to and throughout pregnancy is the only way to prevent FAS, some prevention programs try to target women before they become pregnant. The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Teaching and Research Awareness Campaign (FASTRAC) is a multimedia, peer-delivered educational presentation designed to reduce the incidence of FAS. Results from an ethnically diverse sample of high school students indicate that the program increased participants' knowledge regardi

Assessing the Diagnostic Accuracy of Multimedia Messaging for the Diagnosis of Scaphoid Fractures.

Introduction:Use of smartphone messaging applications, such as WhatsApp, for communication within clinical teams is widespread. Various studies have shown multiple uses for smartphones and multimedia messaging in orthopedic clinical practice for coordinating clinical duties and diagnosing various injuries but none have assessed scaphoid fractures. Our aims were to: (1) assess diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value) of viewing scaphoid X-rays on smartphones compared with desktop computers by using radiologist reports on the same X

Multimedia article: endoscopically guided thoracoscopic esophagectomy for stricture in a child.

PURPOSE: Caustic ingestion is a common cause for acquired esophageal strictures in children. Thoracoscopic esophagectomy can be very useful in this setting, particularly for short segments of disease [1-4]. Thus far, the use of endoscopy to guide resection margins has not been described. METHODS: A 6-year-old boy developed a tight, short esophageal stricture from a lye ingestion injury at the age of 4 years. He had a gastrostomy tube placed at the time for supplemental feedings and subsequently failed attempts at antegrade and retrograde esophageal dilatation. This video demonstrates an endos

A novel multimedia tool to improve bedside teaching of cardiac auscultation.

Training in cardiac auscultation is a core element of undergraduate teaching but recent studies have documented a remarkable decline in auscultatory skills. Therefore there is an interest in new ways to teach cardiac auscultation. In analogy to phonocardiography, an electronic system for simultaneous auscultation and visualisation of murmurs was sought. For this purpose, an electronic stethoscope was linked to a laptop computer and software created to visualise auscultatory findings. In a preliminary trial in undergraduate students, this approach greatly facilitated teaching. Amalgamating trad

Carbon Neutrality Drives PAH Mitigation and Multimedia Health Cobenefits in China.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are potent carcinogens with important coemission sources with CO2, but the emission reduction potential and health cobenefits of various decarbonization pathways remain unexplored. This study addresses this gap by developing an integrated modeling framework to quantify PAH emission reductions, spatial distribution in multimedia, and associated health impacts under distinct carbon mitigation scenarios. Here we show that, from 2020 to 2060, enhanced climate policies could reduce CO2 emissions by 9.5 Gt and simultaneously mitigate PAH emissions by 42.8 kt (

Hexachlorobenzene levels in multimedia environmental samples from selected chemical production plants.

A sampling and analysis program was conducted to determine hexachlorobenzene (HCB) levels in air, water, soil and sediment. Nine industrial plants were selected, representing six major industries: perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chlorine, triazine herbicides and pentachloronitrobenzene. Of the six industries sampled, higher concentrations of HCB were associated with the production of perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride. In the one plant that produced only carbon tetrachloride, HCB levels were quite low. HCB concentrations were relatively hi
