Learning while multitasking: short and long-term benefits of brain stimulation.

We employed a simulated production task that mimics the real-world skill acquisition required of operators working in control rooms of power plants to assess short and long-term effects of transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS). tRNS has shown potential for enhancing learning and performance of cognitive skills. Forty subjects (24 female) learned how to execute the simulated production task during the training phase and were required to perform a secondary task during the skill acquisition phase while they received active (12 min) or sham tRNS on DLPFC. After 2 weeks they had to recall t

Influence of light-exposure during late incubation and early feeding on the performance of layer chicks in a multitasking test and step detour test.

During on-farm hatching, chicken embryos experience continuous light during late incubation, and have immediate access to feed and water post-hatch. While on-farm hatching compared to hatchery-hatching improves several welfare indicators in broilers, the combined effects of light exposure and early feeding on behavioral and cognitive development in broilers and layers remains unclear. On-farm hatching systems are expected to expand into the laying hen sector due to the advances regarding in ovo-sexing and vaccination technologies. We investigated effects of continuous light exposure from 18 un

Swimming with a head-mounted display: dual-task costs.

Head-up displays (HUDs) have the potential to change work in operation environments by providing hands-free information to wearers. However, these benefits may be accompanied by trade-offs, primarily by increasing cognitive load due to dividing attention. Previous studies have attempted to understand the trade-offs of HUD usage; however, all of which were focused on land-based tasks. A gap in understanding exists when examining HUD use in aquatic environments as immersion introduces unique environmental and physiological factors that could affect multitasking. In this study, we investigated mu

Dual-task gait differences in female and male adolescents following sport-related concussion.

Concussion may affect females and males differentially. Identification of gender-related differences after concussion, therefore, may help clinicians with individualized evaluations. We examined potential differences in dual-task gait between females and males after concussion. Thirty-five participants diagnosed with a concussion (49% female, mean age=15.0±2.1 years, 7.5±3.0 days post-injury) and 51 controls (51% female, mean age=14.4±2.1 years) completed a symptom inventory and single/dual-task gait assessment. The primary outcome variable, the dual-task cost, was calculated as the percent ch

Embodied Sensorimotor Control: Computational Modeling of the Neural Control of Movement.

We review how sensorimotor control is dictated by interacting neural populations, optimal feedback mechanisms, and the biomechanics of bodies. First, we outline the distributed anatomical loops that shuttle sensorimotor signals between cortex, subcortical regions, and spinal cord. We then summarize evidence that neural population activity occupies low-dimensional, dynam-ically evolving manifolds during planning and execution of movements. Next, we summarize literature explaining motor behavior through the lens of optimal control theory, which clarifies the role of internal models and feedback

Smartphone and Wearable Sensors for the Estimation of Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy Disease Severity: Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a progressive neuromuscular disease. Its slow and variable progression makes the development of new treatments highly dependent on validated biomarkers that can quantify disease progression and response to drug interventions. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to build a tool that estimates FSHD clinical severity based on behavioral features captured using smartphone and remote sensor data. The adoption of remote monitoring tools, such as smartphones and wearables, would provide a novel opportunity for continuous, passive, and objective monitoring

The influence of dopaminergic medication on balance automaticity in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that dual-task standing balance in Parkinson's disease (PD) is significantly diminished. Additionally, it is well accepted that dopaminergic medication improves dynamic balance (Berg Balance Scale, mini-BESTest), but standing balance (force platform posturography) may suffer. What remains unknown is how dopaminergic medication influences standing balance automaticity in PD. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does dopaminergic medication improve standing balance automaticity during a phoneme monitoring dual-task in PD? METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Sixteen subjects

Anodal tDCS applied during multitasking training leads to transferable performance gains.

Cognitive training can lead to performance improvements that are specific to the tasks trained. Recent research has suggested that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied during training of a simple response-selection paradigm can broaden performance benefits to an untrained task. Here we assessed the impact of combined tDCS and training on multitasking, stimulus-response mapping specificity, response-inhibition, and spatial attention performance in a cohort of healthy adults. Participants trained over four days with concurrent tDCS - anodal, cathodal, or sham - applied to the l

Movement timing and cognitive control: adult-age differences in multi-tasking.

Over the course of six sessions, 24 young (M = 19.40 years, SD 1.61) and 24 older participants (M = 71.48 years, SD 3.86) performed simple, repetitive tapping tasks at 300 and 600 ms target durations concurrently with two cognitive tasks under non-switch or switch conditions. Despite substantial improvements, over sessions, reliable switch costs remained, which were pronounced in older adults. Young and older adults alike showed increased drift in the tapping tasks under dual-task conditions. Under dual-task non-switch conditions, older adults maintained the same timing accuracy (variability)

Changed detection: No relationship between working memory and media usage in Covid-era and contemporary young adults.

A decade ago, the widespread adoption of smartphones prompted research assessing the effects of media multitasking on cognitive performance. Early findings showed that high media multitasking imposed a significant cost to attention and executive function. Here, we revisited whether the harmful effects of media multitasking persist in digital native undergraduates, in whom nearly all media usage involves multitasking. We investigated the relationship between media usage and working memory (WM) performance. Across six experiments, we conducted online and in-person testing, using simultaneous or

Neural Comodulation of Independent Brain Processes Related to Multitasking.

Distracted driving is regarded as an integrated task requiring different regions of the brain to receive sensory data, coordinate information, make decisions, and synchronize movements. In this paper, we applied an independent modulator analysis (IMA) method to temporally independent electroencephalography (EEG) components to understand how the human executive control system coordinates different brain regions to simultaneously perform multiple tasks with distractions presented in different modalities. The behavioral results showed that the reaction time (RT) in response to traffic events incr

Shape-Controlled Self-Assembly of Light-Powered Microrobots into Ordered Microchains for Cells Transport and Water Remediation.

Nature presents the collective behavior of living organisms aiming to accomplish complex tasks, inspiring the development of cooperative micro/nanorobots. Herein, the spontaneous assembly of hematite-based microrobots with different shapes is presented. Autonomous motile light-driven hematite/Pt microrobots with cubic and walnut-like shapes are prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, followed by the deposition of a Pt layer to design Janus structures. Both microrobots show a fuel-free motion ability under light irradiation. Because of the asymmetric orientation of the magnetic dipole moment in the

Mobile phones and "inattention" injuries: the risk is real.

Mobile phones though indispensable have a flip side: in fact, they adversely affect our ergonomics and mobility. They share an etiologic burden on the changed profile of inattention injuries; and now have proven to be a necessary evil in the changing lifestyles. We aimed to evaluate the role of mobile phones as a causative factor in these head and neck injuries. We evaluated various injury statistics published throughout the world that attributed the concurrence of neurological injuries to portable handheld communication devices. We evaluated the dangers posed by simultaneous engagement on pho

A neuropsychiatric perspective on traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to closed mechanisms causes strain injuries to axons that increase in number and severity as injury severity increases. Axons that project up from the brain stem are vulnerable, even in milder concussive injuries, and include axons that participate in key monoaminergic pathways. Although called diffuse axonal injury, the supra-tentorial injury component typically shows an anterior preponderance in humans. As the injury forces increase, cerebral contusions may be superimposed on the axonal strain injuries, and these contusions show an anterior preponderance as w

Virtual reality and temporal Myopia: Insights from a multitask experiment in green bond investments.

This study employs a multitask research approach to investigate how a Virtual Reality experience affects behavioral constructs that might shape temporal myopia in investment preferences, as revealed through a Discrete Choice Experiment focused on green bonds. We model key behavioral constructs inspired by the Theory of Planned Behavior to capture individuals' attitudes toward climate change. These pro-environmental behavioral constructs are then incorporated as latent variables within a Hybrid Choice Model to examine their implicit influence on maturity preferences in green bond investments, a

Safety-aware transformer-enhanced unified multi-task perception for road anomaly detection, drivable area segmentation and lane estimation.

The developing countries with unstructured road conditions like in India present considerable challenges to autonomous driving systems. The challenges arise from the presence of road anomalies (potholes, waterlogging, cracks) along with unclear lane markings and mixed traffic participants(pedestrians, cars, bikes, autorickshaws), which demand an efficient perception system. To address these challenges, a Safety Aware Multitask Perception model for Indian roads has been proposed that jointly performs object detection, drivable area segmentation and lane line segmentation. The model adapts a lig
