Atypical intradermal smooth muscle neoplasms (formerly cutaneous leiomyosarcomas): case series, immunohistochemical profile and review of the literature.

Atypical intradermal smooth muscle neoplasms (AISMN, formerly known as cutaneous leiomyosarcomas) are uncommon neoplasms, which seem to be remarkable for their excellent prognosis in contrast to their deeper counterparts. The rarity of AISMN has posed a challenge for characterizing the morphologic spectrum, immunohistochemical staining pattern, and behavior. In this study we evaluated the histologic and immunohistochemical features of 20 cases of AISMN. Clinical follow-up was available on 19 out of 20 patients and ranged from 1 to 124 months with an average of 35 months and a median of 20 mont

Mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine epithelial neoplasm of muscle invasive bladder cancer: a clinicopathologic case study.

Mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine epithelial neoplasms are rare malignant neoplasms that may occur in the bladder with highly aggressive behavior. Because of its worse prognosis, when compared to the pure urothelial carcinoma without the neuroendocrine component, the bladder mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine epithelial neoplasm may be considered a distinct clinicopathologic entity. We present a case of mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine epithelial neoplasm occurring in the urinary bladder of an elderly female with a personal history of chronic kidney disease, drug-resistant urina

An estrogen receptor-positive locally aggressive smooth muscle neoplasm of the transverse colon: A case report.

RATIONALE: Extrauterine leiomyomas (LMs) in women are often positive for the estrogen receptor (ER); however, almost all extrauterine leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) are negative for ER. Invasive smooth muscle neoplasms (SMNs) of the gastrointestinal tract walls are very rare and those ER statuses have not been well studied. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a 10 years history of recurrent severe abdominal pain and diarrhea lasting about an hour, with frequency of about twice per year. She was clinically diagnosed with a submucosal tumor (SMT) of the transverse colon

Do urinary bladder smooth muscle neoplasms show morphologic and immunophenotypic features of their uterine fumarate hydratase-deficient counterparts?

While the morphologic and immunophenotypic features of smooth muscle neoplasms of the uterus and skin have been well-described in relationship to fumarate hydratase (FH) deficiency (FHD), a potential association of urinary bladder smooth muscle tumors with FH tumor predisposition syndrome (FHTPS) has not been previously investigated. Given an index urinary bladder leiomyoma which showed some of the purported morphologic features seen in uterine FHD leiomyomas, we performed a multi-institutional search for bladder smooth muscle tumors to further evaluate a putative FHTPS association. Cases were

Multiparametric Classification of Non-Muscle Invasive Papillary Urothelial Neoplasms: Combining Morphological, Phenotypical, and Molecular Features for Improved Risk Stratification.

Diagnosis and grading of non-invasive papillary urothelial tumors according to the current WHO classification poses some challenges for pathologists. The diagnostic reproducibility of separating low-grade and high-grade lesions is low, which impacts their clinical management. Whereas papillary urothelial neoplasms with low malignant potential (PUN-LMP) and low-grade papillary non-invasive carcinoma (LG-PUC) are comparable and show frequent local recurrence but rarely metastasize, high-grade papillary non-invasive carcinoma (HG-PUC) has a poor prognosis. The main objective of this work is to de

Psoas/iliacus muscle invasion from mucinous appendiceal neoplasm. Radiologic appearance and outcome of treatment in 3 patients.

BACKGROUND: Mucinous appendiceal neoplasms have a pattern of metastases that is different from the other gastrointestinal cancers. The first site for cancer dissemination is the peritoneal space surrounding the primary tumor and this is followed by increasingly extensive peritoneal spread. Invasion of the psoas and iliacus muscle is an unusual phenomenon. METHOD: From a prospective database of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms treated by cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and perioperative hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPEC), patients with psoas muscle invasion were reviewed. Their clinical features and

Complex multilocular cystic lesion of rete testis, accompanied by smooth muscle hyperplasia, mimicking intratesticular Leydig cell neoplasm.

Non-neoplastic smooth muscle cell proliferation occurs under a variety of circumstances in many body organs. These abnormalities have been described as hypertrophy, hyperplasia or hamartomatous proliferations. In the male genital system, the excessive growth of smooth muscle in spermatic cord or paratesticular tissue is rare. In previously described cases, these lesions presented as masses but lacked the microscopic features of a neoplasm. We describe a complex multilocular cystic lesion composed of cystic transformation of the rete testis associated with smooth muscle proliferation mimicking

True smooth muscle neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract: morphological spectrum and classification in a series of 85 cases from a single institute.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: True smooth-muscle neoplasms of the GI tract have been only rarely studied in the KIT era. Their incidence among other GI mesenchymal tumours and their clinicopathological spectrum have not been sufficiently analysed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed all GI mesenchymal lesions at the Pathology Institute of the Nuremberg Clinic Centre from 1994 through 2005. RESULTS: Among 262 lesions, there were 142 GISTs (54%) and 85 true smooth muscle neoplasms (32%). Smooth muscle neoplasms comprised 72 polypoid leiomyomas (78%, 5 oesophageal and 67 colorectal), 10 intramural leiomyo

EBV-Associated Smooth Muscle Tumors With Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia and Hepatitis B Infection: Report of a Previously Undescribed Neoplasm With Review.

Epstein-Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumor (EBV-SMT) is rare in adults. The presence of intratumoral T lymphocytes and primitive rounded cells characterized this neoplasm. We report a 24-year-old Chinese man who developed EBV-SMT in the right adrenal gland with hepatitis B infection and autoimmune hemolytic anemia without a history of HIV infection, primary immune deficiency, organ transplantation, or malignant tumor. This patient had an unknown immunodeficient state. EBV-SMTs are commonly located in the liver, lung, and gastrointestinal tract but rarely in the adrenal gland. We reviewe

[Estimation of quality of voice after removal of neoplasms T1 and T2 of glottis with simultaneous reconstruction of vocal fold with pedunculated sterno-thyroid muscle flap].

INTRODUCTION: In recent years there has been an increasing number of cases of cancer, including cancer of the larynx. The choice of treatment should be primarily dictated by the complete elimination of cancer, but from the point of view of the patient, an important factor to keep in mind, is the quality of the voice that will be created at the end of the therapeutic process. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the voice quality of patients after partial surgery of the larynx with vocal fold reconstruction pedunculated sterno-thyroid muscle flap. Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor ('PEComa') of the uterus: a subset of HMB-45-positive epithelioid mesenchymal neoplasms with an uncertain relationship to pure smooth muscle tumors.

The family of lesions thought to be composed at least in part of perivascular epithelioid cells, characterized as HMB-45-positive epithelioid cells with clear to eosinophilic granular cytoplasm and a propensity for a perivascular distribution, includes some forms of angiomyolipoma and lymphangioleiomyomatosis, as well as clear cell "sugar" tumor (CC-SUGAR). When composed predominantly or exclusively of epithelioid cells, it has been suggested that these lesions be classified as "perivascular epithelioid cell tumors" (PEComa). Four cases of uterine PEComa have been described in the literature,

Histiocyte-rich rhabdomyoblastic tumor: rhabdomyosarcoma, rhabdomyoma, or rhabdomyoblastic tumor of uncertain malignant potential? A histologically distinctive rhabdomyoblastic tumor in search of a place in the classification of skeletal muscle neoplasms.

Skeletal muscle tumors are traditionally classified as rhabdomyoma or rhabdomyosarcoma. We have identified an unusual adult rhabdomyoblastic tumor not clearly corresponding to a previously described variant of rhabdomyoma or rhabdomyosarcoma, characterized by a very striking proliferation of non-neoplastic histiocytes, obscuring the underlying tumor. Ten cases were identified in nine males and one female with a median age of 43 years (range 23-69 years). Tumors involved the deep soft tissues of the trunk (N = 4), lower limbs (N = 4), and neck (N = 2). Tumors were well-circumscribed, nodular ma

Splenic smooth-muscle tumors in children with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: report of two cases of this unusual location with evidence of an association with Epstein-Barr virus.

Smooth-muscle neoplasms are rarely located in the spleen. They have been previously reported in five cases of children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Two cases of children with HIV infection/AIDS with autopsy and surgical pathology evidence of multiple smooth-muscle neoplasms with splenic involvement are presented. DNA was extracted from histology slides in both cases for analysis for Epstein Barr (EB) virus. In both cases, the presence of EB virus was confirmed. This paper documents two additional cases of the unusual phenomenon of

Primary intracranial smooth muscle tumors in immunocompromised patients.

Primary intracranial smooth muscle tumors are rare and range from benign to malignant. We report 2 patients with primary intracranial smooth muscle neoplasms in immunocompromised host, 1 patient each with primary intracranial leiomyoma and primary intracranial leiomyosarcoma, both of whom clinically and radiologically mimicked meningioma. Both patients were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive. Hence, smooth muscle neoplasms should be considered in the differential diagnosis of well-circumscribed intracranial lesion, especially in immunocompromised patients.

Mesenchymal lesions of the vulva.

Mesenchymal lesions of the vulva include site-specific entities limited to the lower genital tract, as well as a range of non-site-specific tumors that are more common at extragenital sites. Site-specific lesions include fibroepithelial stromal polyp, cellular angiofibroma, angiomyofibroblastoma, and aggressive angiomyxoma. Non-site-specific tumors that may occur in the vulva include those of smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, vascular, neural, adipocytic, and uncertain differentiation. This review discusses both site-specific and non-site-specific vulvar mesenchymal lesions including non-neoplas
