Musculocutaneous nerve injury in a high school pitcher.

: Nontraumatic musculocutaneous nerve palsy is a rare injury that can occur in throwers. We present a case of musculocutaneous nerve injury in a high school pitcher, which has rarely been previously reported. The unique electromyography findings add to the overall spectrum seen with musculocutaneous nerve injuries in throwers. Sensory abnormalities may not be present at initial evaluation, but rather weakness or pain of the biceps is the most common presenting concern. Electrodiagnostic evaluation is paramount for confirmation of diagnosis, yet the timing of this study is critical for its accu

Surgical anatomy of bicipital branch of musculocutaneous nerve.

Twenty patients with brachial plexus injury have been treated with one fascicle nerve transfer to the bicipital branch of the musculocutaneous nerve for reconstruction of elbow flexion. The mean distance from the medial epicondyle to the origin of this branch is 17.9 centimeters. The correlation coefficient and test of statistic significance between distance and heights of patients is 0.76 and 5.07 respectively (t18, 0.995 = 2.88). There is no correlation between the arm span, weight, age and the distance.

Isolated Musculocutaneous Nerve Palsy Following Supraclavicular Nerve Block: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The supraclavicular (SC) nerve block is a procedure utilized by anesthesiologists with the goal of providing analgesia to the upper extremity at and below the shoulder. We present a case report of an SC continuous peripheral nerve block (CPNB) complicated by isolated musculocutaneous nerve palsy despite cessation of infusion of local anesthetic. CASE REPORT: Patient was a 39-year-old woman with chronic ischemic left-hand pain for which an SC CPNB was placed. Following sympathectomy of the radial and ulnar digital arteries, she reported inability to flex/extend her elbow or shoulde

Anatomical Variations of the Musculocutaneous Nerve in the Human Fetus.

OBJECTIVES: Knowing the motor branches and variations of the musculocutaneous nerve to the muscles along its course will facilitate the treatment of flexor spasticity and supracondylar fractures of the humerus in order to minimize nerve lesion. In fetal cadavers, the purpose of our study was to determine the number and course of the formation variations and motor branches of the musculocutaneous nerve. The significance of studying fetal nerve variations is due to injury to the brachial plexus roots during birth. METHODS: Our study was conducted using the anatomical dissection technique on 102

Median and musculocutaneous nerves: variant formation and distribution.

An unusual formation of the median and musculocutaneous nerves was observed during routine dissection of the left upper limb of a 60-year-old Caucasian male cadaver. The median nerve was formed by the fusion of three roots, two from the lateral and one from the medial cord of the brachial plexus. The variant lateral root of the median nerve followed an anomalous course, crossing anterior to the distal part of the axillary artery. Moreover, in the distal half of the arm, the median nerve contributed a communicating branch to the musculocutaneous nerve. Injury to such a variant median nerve in t

Bilateral absence of musculocutaneous nerve: a case report.

Detailed knowledge of course and distribution of nerves in the axilla and arm is very important in the management of nerve injuries particularly in case of their variations. Bilateral absence of the musculocutaneous nerve was found during routine dissection in a male cadaver. The dissected part was cleared to see the distribution of the muscles of the arm. The muscles of the flexor compartment were supplied by the median nerve, instead of the musculocutaneous nerve. The present case report of this anatomical variation of the nerves should help in management of nerve injuries in the axilla or t

Musculocutaneous nerve palsy: an isolated complication of surgery.

Isolated paralysis of the musculocutaneous nerve, as reported in the literature, is an extremely rare phenomenon. It is our purpose to document the occurrence of one case as a complication of abdominal surgery. Possible mechanisms suggest why the musculocutaneous nerve may be vulnerable to injury during surgical procedures that incorporate certain methods of patient positioning. The particular pattern of nerve damage reflected in this case report may be helpful in further elucidating the other, more common, diffuse postoperative brachial plexus palsies.

[A misdiagnosed disorder: syndrome of the musculocutaneous nerve of the foot].

The syndrome of the pedal dorsal cutaneous nerve (described by one of us in 1979) is caused by irritation of the nerve in its course at the dorsum pedis. This is a rather frequent syndrome, often overlooked. It is manifested by a distinct association of atypical pain at the dorsum pedis and in the foot. After a review of 10 cases and a literature survey, the authors describe the characteristic signs of this syndrome. There are many factors at the origin of this pathology: static deformities (pes cavus anterior, valgus calcaneus, hallux valgus), local trauma or repeated microtrauma (ill sitting

Neurotization of musculocutaneous nerve with intercostal nerve versus phrenic nerve - A retrospective comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus injuries are common after both blunt and penetrating traumas resulting in upper limb weakness. The nerve transfer to the affected nerve distal to the injury site is a good option where proximal stump of the nerve is unhealthy or absent which has shown early recovery and better results. Commonly used procedures to restore elbow flexion are ipsilateral phrenic or ipsilateral intercostal nerves (ICNs) in global plexus injuries. The use of both intercostal and phrenic nerves for elbow flexion is well described and there is no definite consensus on the superiority of one

Surgical relationship of the medial pectoral nerve to the musculocutaneous nerve: a cadaveric study.

OBJECTIVE: For purposes of neurotization of the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) with the medial pectoral nerve (MPN) after upper trunk brachial plexus injuries, the anatomic relationship between these two nerves was defined in a cadaveric model. METHODS: Thirty-five brachial plexuses in 18 adult cadavers were dissected. The distance between the origin of the MPN from the medial cord to the origin of the MCN from the lateral cord was measured. The length, diameter, branching, and location of the MPN were recorded. The diameter of the proximal MCN was recorded. RESULTS: Thirty-seven percent of th

An analysis of the results of transferring the musculocutaneous nerve onto the median nerve in tetraplegics.

Following injuries of the cervical spinal cord at the common level with C6 neurological level sparing, abduction of the shoulder and elbow flexion remain active. The flexors of the elbow are controlled by the musculocutaneous nerve formed mainly from C5 and C6 fibers, the motor cells of which are usually located above the level of the spinal lesion. The encouraging report of anastomosis of the musculocutaneous nerve to the median nerve, described by Benassy and Robart, induced us to perform similar operations in 42 patients with traumatic tetraplegia. In 32 patients this has restored simple gr

Transference of thoracodorsal nerve to musculocutaneous or axillary nerve in old traumatic injury.

On the basis of anatomic studies, we have devised a new method of transferring the thoracodorsal nerve to reinnervate the paralytic deltoid or biceps muscles in an old traumatic injury of the associated nerve. It has been applied to a case of musculocutaneous nerve injury and two cases of axillary nerve injury with good results. The muscle functions have returned to normal within 1 and 2 years, respectively, as shown by electromyography and the muscular contractility test.

Hourglass-like constriction of the musculocutaneous nerve: case report.

Hourglass-like constriction has been previously associated with the main trunk of the radial nerve, with its branch of the posterior interosseous nerve, as well as the anterior interosseous nerve, a branch of the median and axillary nerve. Here, we report a case of hourglass-like constriction of the musculocutaneous nerve lesion that showed no recognizable compressive structure.

Rare anatomical variation of the musculocutaneous nerve - case report.

The clinical and surgical importance of anatomical knowledge of the musculocutaneous nerve and its variations is due to the fact that one of the complications in many upper-limb surgical procedures involves injury to this nerve. During routine dissection of the right upper limb of a male cadaver, we observed an anatomical variation of this nerve. The musculocutaneous nerve originated in the lateral cord and continued laterally, passing under the coracobrachialis muscle and then continuing until its first branch to the biceps brachialis muscle. Just after this, it supplied another two branches,
