[Musical Hallucinosis].

Musical hallucination is one of the most complex forms of auditory hallucinations, where subjects perceive complex sound in the form of music, in the absence of an acoustic stimulus. It has been reported in patients with diseases such as psychiatric disorders, organic brain diseases, and epilepsy. However, the most common of these are idiopathic musical hallucinations that occur alongside deafness in the elderly. In recent years, there have been many reports of musical hallucination occurring as a result of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Musical hallucinations accompanying hearing los

[Music in the picture -- musical scores and other music-related pictorial elements in the visual artworks of schizophrenic patients].

Since the beginning of the 20th century music scores and other music releated pictoral elements have repeteadly appeared in psychotic patients' visual artworks. Interestingly, little attention was paid to these enigmatic forms of psychopathological art expression till the 1970s. This essay investigates the underlying psychopathology and the psychodynamic basis of musical elements applied in psychotic patients' visual art expression within a phenomenological- intersubjective framework integrating the art-historical context of the 20th century. As an illustration, artworks of the psychopathologi

Music for epilepsy: impact of temporal music structure on intervention outcomes.

Previous music interventions for epilepsy have reportedly associated favorable patient outcomes with exposure to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K. 448). Other songs have reportedly replicated this phenomenon, raising the possibility that music reportedly associated with favorable outcomes might contain similar properties. This exploratory study investigated this possibility, which could inform a conceptual foundation for prospective works and future hypotheses. Music was assigned to Group A (literature-reported favorable intervention outcomes) or Group B (literature-reported as not

Zipf-Mandelbrot scaling in Korean court music: Universal patterns in music.

Rank-frequency distributions in many complex systems, including natural language, are often well described by the Zipf-Mandelbrot law. Due to the semantic characteristics of this law, it has also been observed in musical data. However, most such studies have focused on Western music, and its applicability to non-Western music remains not well investigated. We analyzed 43 Korean court music pieces called Jeong-ak, spanning several centuries and written in the traditional Korean musical notation Jeongganbo. These pieces were transcribed into Western staff notation, and musical data such as pitch

Pathways to seeing music: enhanced structural connectivity in colored-music synesthesia.

Synesthesia, a condition in which a stimulus in one sensory modality consistently and automatically triggers concurrent percepts in another modality, provides a window into the neural correlates of cross-modal associations. While research on grapheme-color synesthesia has provided evidence for both hyperconnectivity-hyperbinding and disinhibited feedback as potential underlying mechanisms, less research has explored the neuroanatomical basis of other forms of synesthesia. In the current study we investigated the white matter correlates of colored-music synesthesia. As these synesthetes report

Music and the heart.

Music can powerfully evoke and modulate emotions and moods, along with changes in heart activity, blood pressure (BP), and breathing. Although there is great heterogeneity in methods and quality among previous studies on effects of music on the heart, the following findings emerge from the literature: Heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) are higher in response to exciting music compared with tranquilizing music. During musical frissons (involving shivers and piloerection), both HR and RR increase. Moreover, HR and RR tend to increase in response to music compared with silence, and HR appe

From the American Academy of Pediatrics: Policy statement--Impact of music, music lyrics, and music videos on children and youth.

Music plays an important role in the socialization of children and adolescents. Popular music is present almost everywhere, and it is easily available through the radio, various recordings, the Internet, and new technologies, allowing adolescents to hear it in diverse settings and situations, alone or shared with friends. Parents often are unaware of the lyrics to which their children are listening because of the increasing use of downloaded music and headphones. Research on popular music has explored its effects on schoolwork, social interactions, mood and affect, and particularly behavior. T

"But not the music": psychopathic traits and difficulties recognising and resonating with the emotion in music.

Recognising and responding appropriately to emotions is critical to adaptive psychological functioning. Psychopathic traits (e.g. callous, manipulative, impulsive, antisocial) are related to differences in recognition and response when emotion is conveyed through facial expressions and language. Use of emotional music stimuli represents a promising approach to improve our understanding of the specific emotion processing difficulties underlying psychopathic traits because it decouples recognition of emotion from cues directly conveyed by other people (e.g. facial signals). In Experiment 1, part

Musical hallucinations, musical imagery, and earworms: A new phenomenological survey.

Musical hallucinations (MH) account for a significant proportion of auditory hallucinations, but there is a relative lack of research into their phenomenology. In contrast, much research has focused on other forms of internally generated musical experience, such as earworms (involuntary and repetitive inner music), showing that they can vary in perceived control, repetitiveness, and in their effect on mood. We conducted a large online survey (N = 270), including 44 participants with MH, asking participants to rate imagery, earworms, or MH on several variables. MH were reported as occurring les

Musical anhedonia: selective loss of emotional experience in listening to music.

Recent case studies have suggested that emotion perception and emotional experience of music have independent cognitive processing. We report a patient who showed selective impairment of emotional experience only in listening to music, that is musical anhednia. A 71-year-old right-handed man developed an infarction in the right parietal lobe. He found himself unable to experience emotion in listening to music, even to which he had listened pleasantly before the illness. In neuropsychological assessments, his intellectual, memory, and constructional abilities were normal. Speech audiometry and

The Music Engagement Scale: An Instrument to Measure Engagement in Music Making.

Music engagement is a central process of music therapy, but there remains a need for a feasible instrument to measure it. The Music Engagement Scale (MES) addresses this need with a single-item process measure of music engagement. This study evaluated the sensitivity to change and inter-rater reliability of the MES using a convenience sample of 20 clients (ages 1-69 years) receiving individual sessions in Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy (NRMT). The majority of clients were autistic children. Three independent raters with graduate training in music therapy, but no advanced NRMT training, rated th

Macao Guangdong music through the lens of ethnography of musical performance.

This study adopts the ethnography of musical performance as its methodological framework. Taking the Macao Guangdong Music Friendship Association as its primary field site, it employs a three-tiered "body-event-context" model to examine the living practices of a traditional music society in an urban setting. Through participant observation of rehearsals, teaching sessions, community festivals, and international performances, the research focuses on a micro-ethnographic thick description of the musicians' embodied practices, including playing postures, aural habits, and non-verbal interactions.

Music Genre as a Predictor of Resource Utilization at Outdoor Music Concerts.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the various modern music genres and their effect on the utilization of medical resources with analysis and adjustment for potential confounders. METHODS: A retrospective review of patient logs from an open-air, contemporary amphitheater over a period of 10 years was performed. Variables recorded by the medical personnel for each concert included the attendance, description of the weather, and a patient log in which nature and outcome were recorded. The primary outcomes were associations of genres with the medical usage rate (MUR). Secondary out

Musical hallucinations and musical imagery: prevalence and phenomenology in schizophrenic inpatients.

The discussion of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia has traditionally focused on verbal auditory hallucinations, or 'voices'. Little attention, on the other hand, has been given to the phenomenon of musical hallucinations. In an effort to characterize the prevalence and phenomenology of musical hallucinations, 100 consecutive schizophrenic inpatients were examined for the presence of musical hallucinations and musical imagery. Sixteen patients responded positively, and were engaged in a more thorough interview. They were then divided into two groups: those with musical hallucinations, a
