Songwriting in Medical Music Therapy in Pediatric Palliative Care: Case-Based Clinical Insight from Music Therapy Practice.

OBJECTIVE: Children receiving pediatric palliative care (PPC) have complex, multidimensional needs requiring an integrative and person-centered approach. Although songwriting (SW) within medical music therapy (MMT) has been used to support expression and communication, its role as a process-oriented intervention in PPC remains underexplored. This case-based report explores the use of SW to support emotional expression, communication, and meaning-making at the end of life. METHODS: We describe the case of a 12-year-old patient with advanced Burkitt lymphoma receiving MMT during hospitalization

An Enlightenment proposal for music therapy: Richard Brocklesby on music, spirit, and the passions.

In 1749, the London physician Richard Brocklesby (1722-1797) published his Reflections on Antient [sic] and Modern Musick, an essay that not only sought to compare these practices in terms of their effects, but also to gather evidence supporting the use of music in treating mania and other mental diseases. As might be expected, Brocklesby's discussion of music therapy has already received attention by authors looking back to the origins of this practice, not least because he offers an account of a successful musical cure that took place in his own time (Rorke, 2001). My chapter, however, seeks

Development of a Musical Identity Measure to Tailor Music Therapy for Mental Health.

Music therapy (MT) may help address the global epidemics of depression and anxiety. Tailoring of MT interventions to participants' Musical identity (MI)-an individual's emotional and physical connection to music-may substantially increase the effectiveness of MT. Therefore, we developed and tested an exploratory scale for assessing MI and determined associations between components of MI and sociodemographic and mental health outcomes. To achieve this goal, we assessed a national sample of 1512 U.S. adults aged 30-70 years in July-August 2023. We measured depression using the validated Patient

Economic Evaluations of Music Therapy and Other Music-Based Interventions: A Scoping Review.

The cost-effectiveness of an intervention is an important factor in health care decisions about which health care services should be publicly funded and/or approved as an eligible intervention for private insurance coverage. Music therapy as a health profession lacks substantial research on the cost-effectiveness of its services and there is no overview of existing data. We therefore conducted a scoping review. To contextualize and focus the scope, we describe different types of economic evaluations (EEs) and characterize four types of music interventions. Following the PRISMA extension for sc

Music Therapy in Patients Undergoing Pancreatic Surgery (MUSIC PUPS): A Mixed Methods Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) and distal pancreatectomy (DP) are painful procedures often accompanied by psychological distress. Music therapy interventions such as music-assisted relaxation and imagery (MARI) have demonstrated efficacy for acute pain but have not been examined within PD/DP. Gene expression mechanisms by which MARI may affect pain also remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of administering MARI, collecting dried blood spots (DBS), and collecting mobile-device patient-reported outcomes (MDPRO) among adults undergoin

Digital music intervention and music therapy across the dementia care continuum: Randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Music interventions show promise in dementia care and digital approaches may increase availability and accessibility. We investigated the efficacy of a digital music intervention (DMI) and conventional music therapy (CMT) compared to standard care (SC) across the dementia care continuum. METHODS: In an exploratory parallel-group randomized controlled trial, community-dwelling (HOME, n = 91) and care home-dwelling (CARE, n = 75) persons living with dementia (n = 166) were randomized to DMI, CMT, or SC. Group-based music interventions spanned 10 weeks (2 × 60-minute sessions/week)

Music therapy for children with Rett syndrome.

Access to a handicapped child with Rett syndrome may be attempted through its eyes and by means of music. The receptivity for rhythm and melodies must be located within a primitive region of the hierarchical structure of the brain because even severely retarded children do respond to music. If purposefully applied with several instruments music therapy can bring about at least a temporary cessation of the stereotypic movements in children with Rett syndrome. Many years of experience attest to the feasibility of this approach.

Music therapy in addition to music listening for the prevention of delirium in mechanically ventilated patients.

INTRODUCTION: Delirium in mechanically ventilated patients has resulted in prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) and ventilator stay and higher mortality. Research has shown that a bundle containing sedation awakening and spontaneous breathing trials, appropriate choice of sedatives, early mobilization, and family engagement was associated with a reduced rate of delirium. Music listening and music therapy have also been studied, showing promising results for anxiety and pain control, but have not been studied in terms of preventing delirium. METHODS: As part of a quality improvement project, we

Making music, making friends: Long-term music therapy with young adults with severe learning disabilities.

This collaborative practitioner research study emerged from music therapists' concerns about the value of improvisational, music-centred music therapy for young adults with severe learning disabilities (SLDs), given the long-term nature of such work. Concerns included the relevance, in this context, of formulating, and reporting on, therapeutic aims, development, change; and working in 'goal-oriented' way. Focus groups with the young adults' families and a range of professionals suggest that, rather than leading to developmental change, long-term shared therapeutic musicking provides young adu

Music Therapy in Global Aphasia: A Case Report.

Patients affected by global aphasia are no longer able to understand, produce, name objects, write and read. It occurs as a result of functional damage of ischemic or hemorrhagic origin affecting the entire peri-silvan region and frontal operculum. Rehabilitation training aims to promote an early intervention in the acute phase. We described a case of a 57-year-old female patient with left intraparenchymal fronto-temporo-parietal cerebral hemorrhage and right hemiplegia. After admission to clinical rehabilitative center, the patient was not able to perform simple orders and she presented a sev

Music therapy for people with substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder (SUD) is the continued use of one or more psychoactive substances, including alcohol, despite negative effects on health, functioning, and social relations. Problematic drug use has increased by 10% globally since 2013, and harmful use of alcohol is associated with 5.3% of all deaths. Direct effects of music therapy (MT) on problematic substance use are not known, but it may be helpful in alleviating associated psychological symptoms and decreasing substance craving. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effect of music therapy (MT) in addition to standard care versus
