Occurrence and Diversity of Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris in Vegetable Brassica Fields in Nepal.

Black rot caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris was found in 28 sampled cabbage fields in five major cabbage-growing districts in Nepal in 2001 and in four cauliflower fields in two districts and a leaf mustard seed bed in 2003. Pathogenic X. campestris pv. campestris strains were obtained from 39 cabbage plants, 4 cauliflower plants, and 1 leaf mustard plant with typical lesions. Repetitive DNA polymerase chain reaction-based fingerprinting (rep-PCR) using repetitive extragenic palindromic, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus, and BOX primers was used to assess the genet

Sisymbrium officinale, the Plant of Singers: A Review of Its Properties and Uses.

Sisymbrium officinale (hedge mustard and formerly called Erysimum officinale) is a common plant in wild lands of Europe and Africa. It is also cultivated for its seeds and leaves to be used in salad or mustard. Sisymbrium officinale is useful not only in culinary preparations, but it also seems to possess interesting therapeutic properties, especially for throat diseases such as aphonia and hoarseness. For this reason, it is commonly called "herb of singers" (in Italian, "Erba dei cantanti"). Indeed a cup of Sisymbrium officinale infusion is frequently consumed by singers before artistic perfo

Herbivory and relative growth rates of Pieris rapae are correlated with host constitutive salicylic acid and flowering time.

Treatment of plants with exogenous salicylic acid (SA) improves resistance to many bacterial pathogens, but can suppress resistance to insect herbivores. While plants vary naturally in constitutive SA, whether such differences are predictive of resistance to insect herbivores has not been studied previously. We examined the possible role of this endogenous SA in structuring the interactions between the cabbage white butterfly, Pieris rapae, and ten hosts in the mustard family (Brassicaceae). Because P. rapae has multiple generations that utilize different hosts across the year, we included fiv

Verification of exposure to chemical warfare agents through analysis of persistent biomarkers in plants.

The continuing threats of military conflicts and terrorism may involve the misuse of chemical weapons. The present study aims to use environmental samples to find evidence of the release of such agents at an incident scene. A novel approach was developed for identifying protein adducts in plants. Basil (Ocimum basilicum), bay laurel leaf (Laurus nobilis) and stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) were exposed to 2.5 to 150 mg m-3 sulfur mustard, 2.5 to 250 mg m-3 sarin, and 0.5 to 25 g m-3 chlorine gas. The vapors of the selected chemicals were generated under controlled conditions in a dedicated set

[Transcriptome dataset comparing the initial development of swollen stem versus non-swollen basal stem (root-stem node) in Brassicajuncea var. tumida].

The economic value of Brassica juncea var. tumida depends on the yield and quality of its swollen stem (known as Qingcaitou). However, the frequent lodging of the stem base during early swelling causes the plant to grow prostrate, severely limiting mechanical harvesting. This data paper presents a transcriptome dataset constructed primarily from RNA-seq data, supplemented by histological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular validation data, to compare the initial development between the swollen stem and the non-swollen basal stem (root-stem node). The core components of this dataset incl

Testing the joint effects hypothesis of elemental defense using Spodoptera exigua.

Metal hyperaccumulation may be an elemental defense, in which high concentrations of a metal in plant tissues decrease herbivore survival or growth rate. The Joint Effects Hypothesis suggests that a combination of metals, or a combination of a metal with an organic compound, may have an enhanced defensive effect. The enhancement may be additive or synergistic: in either case the concentration of a particular metal necessary to provide a defensive benefit for the plant is lowered. We tested the Joint Effects Hypothesis using Spodoptera exigua (beet armyworm) neonates fed artificial diets. Metal

Exogenous salicylic acid improves photosynthesis and growth through increase in ascorbate-glutathione metabolism and S assimilation in mustard under salt stress.

Ascorbate (AsA)-glutathione (GSH) cycle metabolism has been regarded as the most important defense mechanism for the resistance of plants under stress. In this study the influence of salicylic acid (SA) was studied on ascorbate-glutathione pathway, S-assimilation, photosynthesis and growth of mustard (Brassica juncea L.) plants subjected to 100 mM NaCl. Treatment of SA (0.5 mM) alleviated the negative effects of salt stress and improved photosynthesis and growth through increase in enzymes of ascorbate-glutathione pathway which suggest that SA may participate in the redox balance under salt st

Brassica juncea leaf cuticle proteome analysis shows myrosinase protein, antifreeze activity, and post-translationally modified secretory proteins.

Plant cuticle, the site of perception of stress signals, is an extracellular hydrophobic barrier that covers the epidermis of the above-ground parts. This lipidic layer has been explored for its cutin and wax composition. However, reports on the cuticle proteins are scanty. Therefore, leaf cuticle proteins of Brassica juncea isolated using organic solvents (chloroform-methanol, 2:1(v/v)) were analyzed using gel based and quantitative shotgun proteomics. Out of 615 proteins identified, 27% (169) had signal peptides supporting extracellular localization. Bioinformatics tool, QuickGO predicted th

Constitutive expression of a high-affinity sulfate transporter in Indian mustard affects metal tolerance and accumulation.

The Stylosanthes hamata SHST1 gene encodes a high-affinity sulfate transporter located in the plasma membrane. In this study the S. hamata SHST1 gene was constitutively expressed in Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.] to investigate its importance for tolerance and accumulation of various oxyanions that may be transported by SHST1 and for cadmium, which is detoxified by sulfur-rich compounds. The transgenic SHST1 lines SHST1-12C and SHST1-4C were compared with wild-type Indian mustard for tolerance and accumulation of arsenate, chromate, tungstate, vanadate, and cadmium. As seedlings

Ecotoxicity Study of Additives Composed of Zinc and Boron.

The high use of additives containing zinc borate and their limited solubility in water both lead to its persistence and accumulation in biological systems. On the other hand, soluble forms of boron are easily available to plant roots and are taken up by plants. There are no ecotoxicological data available for zinc borate, the industrial utilization of which is widespread. Therefore, the potential toxicity of zinc borate and its dissociated compounds was evaluated. Based on two different ecotoxicology tests, their effect on plant growth was studied. Firstly, the impact on Lemna minor growth was

Comparative Study of the Nutritional and Chemical Composition of New Oil Rape, Safflower and Mustard Seed Varieties Developed and Grown in Serbia.

Oilseed crops are widely cultivated and are related to nutrition and human health as valuable nutraceutical sources with valuable biological properties. The growing demand for oil plants used in human and animal nutrition or for the processing industry has contributed to the diversification and development of a new variety of oil crops. Increased oil crop diversity, besides ensuring reduced sensitivity to pests and climate conditions, has also led to improved nutritional values. In order to enable oil crop cultivation to become commercially sustainable, a comprehensive characterization of newl

Assessment of Aphidicidal Effect of Entomopathogenic Fungi against Parthenogenetic Insect, Mustard Aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.).

The mustard aphid (L. erysimi) is a pest that infests various cruciferous crops and transmits plant viruses. To achieve eco-friendly pest management, entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are potential microbial control agents for controlling this pest. Therefore, virulence screening of EPF isolates under Petri dish conditions is necessary before field application. However, the mustard aphid is a parthenogenetic insect, making it difficult to record data during Petri dish experiments. A modified system for detached-leaf bioassays was developed to address this issue, using a micro-sprayer to inoculate c

Cultivar-Specific Effects of Mustard Green Biofumigation on Salmonella enterica Newport Survival in Soil Microcosms.

Brassicaceae cover crops are widely used to improve soil health and provide multiple agronomic benefits. The use of Brassica juncea, oilseed mustard, as a biofumigant to suppress soilborne pests and pathogens is well studied, but data are needed on their impacts on foodborne pathogens in agricultural soils. This study evaluated the cultivar-specific effects of eight mustard varieties on Salmonella enterica survival in soil microcosms. Eight cultivars were grown in a certified organic field, harvested at flowering, chopped, and incorporated into soil inoculated with rifampicin-resistant Salmone

Chromium-induced alterations in photosynthesis and associated attributes in Indian mustard.

Contamination of soil and water by chromium (Cr) is increasing enormously due to anthropogenic activities. The potential of plants to accumulate or stabilize Cr compounds forthe purpose of remediation of Cr contamination has been recognized in recent years. We conducted pot experiments to study photosynthesis and associated attributes in cv Pusa Jai Kisan of Indian mustard under natural as well as Cr-loaded environmental conditions. High doses of Cr caused toxic effects in plants, as evident by a reduction in photosynthetic rate (24.3 to 8.7 micromol CO2 m(-2)s(-1) at 80 DAS), nitrate reductas

Discovery of Transfer Factors in Plant-Derived Proteins and an In Vitro Assessment of Their Immunological Activities.

Repeated exposure to pathogens leads to evolutionary selection of adaptive traits. Many species transfer immunological memory to their offspring to counteract future immune challenges. Transfer factors such as those found in the colostrum are among the many mechanisms where transfer of immunologic memory from one generation to the next can be achieved for an enhanced immune response. Here, a library of 100 plants with high protein contents was screened to find plant-based proteins that behave like a transfer factor moiety to boost human immunity. Aqueous extracts from candidate plants were tes

Effects of soil biofumigation on non-target springtails (Collembola) and earthworms (Opisthopora).

Soil health is supported by diverse communities of organisms, including springtails and earthworms, facilitating essential processes such as nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and soil structure maintenance. Cultural control methods promoted through Integrated Pest Management (IPM) are often assumed to be environmentally friendly, and their potential effects on soil health have received limited attention. Biofumigation, a cultural tactic, utilizes cruciferous plants like Brassica juncea (Brassicales: Brassicaceae), or their byproducts, to control soil-borne pests, yet their impact
