Ten cases of skin infection due to Mycobacterium marinum are reported from Israel. Most of the infections were contracted in natural bathing pools at Ein Feshka on the shores of the Dead Sea, south of Jericho. The lesions closely resembled those of cutaneous leishmaniasis prevalent in this region. The condition does not seem to have been detected previously in the Middle East.

Mycobacterium abscessus infection is challenging to treat. Extrapulmonary M. abscessus infections (EP-MAB) are less common than pulmonary M. abscessus infections. To evaluate treatment regimens, we retrospectively analyzed consecutive microbiologically confirmed EP-MAB cases diagnosed in France during 2012-2020. We studied 45 patients with EP-MAB, including 14 bone and joint infections, 10 skin and soft tissue infections, and 8 lymph node infections. Most (62%) patients had no reported immunodeficiency. In 27 patients, EP-MAB followed healthcare-associated (44%) or environmental (16%) injuries

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is a highly successful pathogen because of its ability to persist in human lungs for long periods of time. MTB modulates several aspects of the host immune response. Lymphocyte-activation gene 3 (LAG3) is a protein with a high affinity for the CD4 receptor and is expressed mainly by regulatory T cells with immunomodulatory functions. To understand the function of LAG3 during MTB infection, a nonhuman primate model of tuberculosis, which recapitulates key aspects of natural human infection in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), was used. We show that the expressio

Mycobacterium szulgai is a scotochromogenic species that has recently been recognized as a human pathogen. Twenty-four cases of disease caused by M. szulgai in humans have been reported in the English-language literature. The clinical features of these cases were reviewed, and three additional cases (two pulmonary, one extrapulmonary) were studied. Pulmonary disease indistinguishable from that caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis was the commonest type of infection caused by M. szulgai (18 of 27 cases). Olecranon bursitis was reported in three cases, and disseminated infection was noted in thr

Mycobacterium avium, a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM), is the main cause of life-threatening NTM infections, which are globally on the rise. Unlike Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium marinum, M. avium lacks ESX-1, a subtype of Type VII secretion system (T7SS) and a key virulence determinant. The absence of ESX-1 in M. avium raises questions about its alternative intracellular survival strategies. To investigate M. avium pathogenesis, we exploited our recently established infection model in zebrafish larvae, enabling live imaging of early host-pathogen interactions. M

After tuberculosis and leprosy, Buruli-ulcer disease (caused by infection with Mycobacterium ulcerans) is the third most common mycobacterial disease in immunocompetent people. Countries in which the disease is endemic have been identified, predominantly in areas of tropical rain forest; the emergence of Buruli-ulcer disease in West African countries over the past decade has been dramatic. Current evidence suggests that the infection is transmitted through abraded skin or mild traumatic injuries after contact with contaminated water, soil, or vegetation; there is one unconfirmed preliminary re

Mycobacterium abscessus is a non-tuberculous mycobacterium notoriously known for causing severe, chronic infections. Treatment of these infections is challenging due to either intrinsic or acquired resistance of M. abscessus to multiple antibiotics. Despite prolonged poly-antimicrobial therapy, treatment of M. abscessus infections often fails, leading to progressive morbidity and eventual mortality. Great research efforts are invested in finding new therapeutic options for M. abscessus. Clofazimine and rifabutin are known anti-mycobacterial antibiotics, repurposed for use against M. abscessus.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by Mycobacterium abscessus group strains are usually resistant to multiple antimicrobials and challenging to treat worldwide. We describe the risk factors, treatment, and clinical outcomes of patients in 2 large academic medical centers in the United States.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of hospitalized adults with a positive culture for M. abscessus in Miami, Florida (January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2014). Demographics, comorbidities, the source of infection, antimicrobial susceptibilities, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. Early treatment failure wa

Sarcoidosis is a chronic disease characterised by the development and accumulation of granulomas in multiple organs. We report two observations of disseminated Mycobacterium genavense infection in patients with proven sarcoidosis. High fever and abdominal pain appeared at 8 and 18 months following the initiation of immunosuppressive therapy. Abdominal computed tomography scans of the patients showed diffuse mesenteric lymphadenitis and splenomegaly. The diagnosis was obtained on bone marrow specimens for both patients with numerous acid-fast bacteria at direct examination and positive s

Mycobacterium haemophilum is an emerging pathogen in immunocompromised patients. We report the clinical and histologic findings of 16 skin biopsies from 11 patients with culture-proven infections by M. haemophilum. The patients had leukemia or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Ten of them had undergone bone marrow transplantation. When the skin biopsy specimens were taken, a portion of the skin was simultaneously submitted to a microbiology laboratory for cultures. The remaining skin was processed routinely. Acid-fast bacilli were found in 11 of 16 lesions. The number of histologically detectable organi

OBJECTIVES: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria infections are frequent in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Mycobacterium avium intracellulare is the most frequent organism isolated but several other mycobacteria are also seen. Mycobacterium gordonae is a saprophytic mycobacteria which is rarely pathogenic. It was observed in 9% (7 patients) of the mycobacterial infections observed in our unit over a period of 3 years.
METHODS: In order to determine whether M. gordonae plays a pathogenic role in HIV-infected patients, we re-evaluated the 7 clinical files of patients wit

INTRODUCTION: Mycobacterium marinum is a slowly growing photochromogenic nontuberculous mycobacterium that has special growth characteristics. It causes a uniquely human disease, a cutaneous syndrome named fish tank granuloma or swimming pool granuloma because of the strong epidemiological links with water. The treatment of this disease involves the use of different antimicrobials alone and in combination, depending on the severity of the disease. The antibiotics most frequently used are macrolides, tetracyclines, cotrimoxazole, quinolones, aminoglycosides, rifamycins, and ethambutol. Other ap

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections of the musculoskeletal system are commonly missed due to its rarity and the absence of systemic symptoms. A high clinical index of suspicion is required to recognize such infections as they may occur in immunocompetent hosts. We present two cases of foot and ankle NTM infections involving Mycobacterium fortuitum and Mycobacterium abscessus in two such patients. The first case involves an 83-year old lady who presented with a two-month history of multiple foot abscesses initially treated at a rural hospital. She underwent drainage and debridement of

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is one of the oldest mycobacterial infections and tuberculosis is the most common mycobacterial infection with a higher degree of infectivity than leprosy. Although both diseases are prevalent in clusters in developing countries, simultaneous occurrence of them in an individual is a rare entity, even in an endemic setting.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe six cases of tuberculosis and leprosy coinfection: a 57-year-old Sinhalese woman, a 47-year-old Tamil woman, a 72-year-old Tamil man, a 59-year-old Sinhalese man, a 54-year-old Sinhalese man, and a 50-year-old Sinhalese man

This report describes the presence of cutaneous nodules and ulceration of the right leg of 1-year duration in an elderly woman. Prior biopsies had demonstrated dermal and subcutaneous granulomatous inflammation. Special stains for microorganisms and cultures were repeatedly negative. Polymerase chain reaction evaluation of the tissue block demonstrated the presence of Mycobacterium obuense.

BACKGROUND: iron is known to play a role in the susceptibility to and outcome of several infections. In view of the increasing worldwide problem of tuberculosis, it may be important to ascertain whether this is also the case with this infection.
OBJECTIVES: (1) to review studies conducted in vitro, in experimental animals, and in humans that provide evidence that iron status may influence the occurrence and outcome of tuberculosis. (2) To perform an in vivo study in mice, examining the effect of iron loading on experimental infection caused by a virulent strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

A case of mycobacteriosis in a collection of canaries (Serinus canarius) is described. The affected birds showed nonspecific clinical signs and macroscopic lesions (slight splenomegaly). Histologic lesions found in liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys consisted of noncaseous nodules containing accumulations of large macrophages that showed a highly vacuolated cytoplasm in which numerous acid-fast organisms were detected. Attempts to isolate and culture the organisms using Löwenstein-Jensen and Coletsos media proved unsuccessful. Microorganisms belonging to the species Mycobacterium genavense were
