Nontuberculous mycobacterium M. avium infection predisposes aged mice to cardiac abnormalities and inflammation.

Biological aging dynamically alters normal immune and cardiac function, favoring the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) and increased instances of cardiac distress. Cardiac failure is the primary reason for hospitalization of the elderly (65+ years). The elderly are also increasingly susceptible to developing chronic bacterial infections due to aging associated immune abnormalities. Since bacterial infections compound the rates of cardiac failure in the elderly, and this phenomenon is not entirely understood, the interplay between the immune system and cardiovasc

High-resolution CT of nontuberculous mycobacterium infection in adult CF patients: diagnostic accuracy.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) for the detection of nontuberculous mycobacterium infection (NTM) in adult cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. METHODS: Twenty-seven CF patients with sputum-culture-proven NTM (NTM+) underwent HRCT. An age, gender and spirometrically matched group of 27 CF patients without NTM (NTM-) was included as controls. Images were randomly and blindly analysed by two readers in consensus and scored using a modified Bhalla scoring system. RESULTS: Significant differences were seen between NTM (+) and NTM (-) patie

Fine needle aspiration cytology of granulomatous diseases of the lung, including nontuberculous Mycobacterium infection.

The spectrum of cytomorphologic changes of pulmonary granulomas diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is reported, with a review of the pertinent literature concerning the cytologic diagnosis of granulomatous disease. In our cases, organisms were not seen in the Papanicolaou-stained smears. Recognition of the granulomatous cellular pattern, however, resulted in a thorough search for organisms by special stains, and an etiologic diagnosis was made in each case. These cases emphasize the need for routine staining and culture of FNA material when an initial diagnosis of malignancy is n

Disseminated nontuberculous mycobacteriosis due to Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis infection in a reindeer from a zoo.

Bacteria in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and nontuberculous mycobacteria may affect a variety of animal species under human care and pose public health risks as zoonotic pathogens. A case of sudden onset of lethargy and increased respiratory effort in a 5-y-old, intact female reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) under managed care had progressed to severe dyspnea despite aggressive treatment. The animal was euthanized due to poor prognosis. Postmortem findings included: disseminated miliary nodules in the lungs, pleura, small intestine, liver, and spleen; enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes; dil

Disseminated Nontuberculous Mycobacterium Infection During Treatment of Multiple Myeloma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma B-cell malignancy characterized by immune dysfunction, with infection representing a major complication. Bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, are common pathogens in patients with MM, but reports on infections with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have been limited. We herein report a case of disseminated NTM infection in a patient with MM undergoing treatment with immunomodulatory drugs. At the diagnosis, the patient showed lymphocytopenia and was treated with clarithromycin, rifampicin, and ethambutol; however, culture positivity persisted, and the

Disseminated Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Infection Following Cerebral Shunt Infection Caused by Mycobacterium fortuitum: A Case Report and Literature Review.

A 64-year-old, previously healthy woman underwent repeated shunt removal and reinsertion for shunt dysfunction due to hydrocephalus. Mycobacterium fortuitum was detected in the culture solution at the end of the removed lumboperitoneal shunt approximately one year before the diagnosis; however, the result was considered to represent environmental contamination. The patient was hospitalized because of a high-grade fever, and M. fortuitum was detected in two blood cultures and a cerebrospinal fluid culture. We diagnosed the patient with disseminated nontuberculous mycobacterial infection due to

Caseous necrotic granuloma in the pituitary stalk due to nontuberculous Mycobacteria (Mycobacterium tokaiense) infection--case report.

A 36-year-old man with no history of immunosuppression presented with diabetes insipidus, but no other hormonal disturbances. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed an enhanced mass in the pituitary stalk appearing as a thickened pituitary stalk. The mass lesion was completely removed through the right optico-carotid space. Histological examination showed epithelioid cell granuloma with caseous necrosis, which strongly suggested mycobacterial infection. However, acid-fast staining detected no bacteria. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) examinations of the gastric juice and cerebrospina

Cross-reactive immunity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis DosR regulon-encoded antigens in individuals infected with environmental, nontuberculous mycobacteria.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis DosR regulon-encoded antigens are highly immunogenic in M. tuberculosis-infected humans and are associated with latent tuberculosis infection. We have investigated the hypothesis that infection with or exposure to nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) can induce cross-reactive immunity to M. tuberculosis DosR regulon-encoded antigens since responsiveness has been observed in non-M. tuberculosis-exposed but purified protein derivative-responsive individuals. M. tuberculosis DosR regulon-encoded antigen-specific T-cell responses were studied in peripheral blood mononuclear

Fallopian tube nontuberculous mycobacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium abscessus mimicking fallopian tube carcinoma: A case report.

Fallopian tube carcinoma is frequently detected at an advanced stage, and its imaging findings and tumor marker profiles are often indistinguishable from those of ovarian or peritoneal carcinoma. Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental acid-fast bacilli with increasing clinical significance in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals. Infection of gynecologic organs is extremely rare. This report describes a case of fallopian tube NTM infection caused by Mycobacterium abscessus that mimicked fallopian tube carcinoma. An 87-year-old woman underwent fluorodeoxyglucose p

Effect of Mixed Infections with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Nontuberculous Mycobacteria on Diagnosis of Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis: A Retrospective Multicentre Study in China.

BACKGROUND: Correct species identification is essential before initiation of TB treatment, due to substantial drug susceptibility profile differences among mycobacterial species. Given that nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are frequently resistant to first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs, cases with mixed infections with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and NTM tend to be diagnosed as multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) cases. Here we report results of a retrospective multicentre study that was conducted to determine the prevalence of TB-NTM infections in previously diagnosed laboratory-co

Nontuberculous Mycobacterium Infections in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients: The Serodiagnosis of Pulmonary Disease due to Mycobacterium avium Complex with an Enzyme Immunoassay Kit Detecting Glycopeptidolipid Core Antigen (Capilia MAC Antibody ELISA)®.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous environmental organisms that can cause various diseases, including pulmonary disease (PD). In patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), numerous pulmonary manifestations, including bronchiectasis, may develop into Mycobacterium avium-complex (MAC)-PD, which can be lethal in patients who are being treated with a tumor necrosis factor-alpha blocker. However, the bronchiectasis associated with NTM-PD is difficult to distinguish from that associated with RA by radiological imaging alone. In addition, the diagnosis of NTM-PD is often hampered by the e

Acid-base variables in acute and chronic form of nontuberculous mycobacterial infection in growing goats experimentally inoculated with Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis or Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis.

In current literature, data assessing the acid-base equilibrium in animals and humans during bacterial infection are rare. This study aimed to evaluate acid-base deteriorations in growing goats with experimentally induced NTM (nontuberculous mycobacteria) infections by application of the traditional Henderson-Hasselbalch approach and the strong ion model. NTM-challenged animals were orally inoculated with either Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis (MAH; n = 18) or Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP; n = 48). Twenty-five goats served as non-infected controls. Until 51st week po

Talaromyces marneffei infection relapse presenting as osteolytic destruction followed by suspected nontuberculous mycobacterium infection during 6 years of follow-up: A case update.

Talaromyces (formerly Penicillium) marneffei, a dimorphic fungus, is the most common opportunistic pathogen in human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV)-positive patients, but it rarely appears in HIV-negative individuals. Previously, in 2014, we reported the case of an HIV-negative Chinese woman with disseminated T. marneffei infection within an osteolytic lesion. Subsequently, she was followed up for 6 years, and we present an updated report of her clinical condition during the follow-up period. She presented with T. marneffei infection relapse and nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) infection. La

Infection due to nontuberculous Mycobacterium other than MAC in AIDS patients at Siriraj hospital during 1998-2000: saprophyte vs pathogen.

HIV is a major health problem in Thailand. These patients are vulnerable to opportunistic infections, especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis and MAC infection. However, NTM was considered a rare disease in Thailand before the AIDS era. In this study, there were 38 HIV seropositive patients with NTM (other than MAC) identified from clinical specimens during the 3 year period 1998-2000 at Siriraj Hospital, which has a higher prevalence than the previous report. Among these patients, 29 cases were likely to have had definite infection from NTM, 5 cases possibly had NTM as a pathogen, and 4 cases h
