Chronic dacryocystitis due to Mycobacterium abscessus.

Dacryocystitis, inflammation and infection of the lacrimal sac, is most commonly caused by infection from Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species. This report highlights a rare case of chronic dacryocystitis due to the atypical pathogen Mycobacterium abscessus. A 62-year-old woman presented with several months of left medial canthal pain, tenderness, and discharge. Exam demonstrated a left tender medial nodule, and imaging showed left lacrimal sac dilation and fluid collection consistent with dacryocystitis. She underwent external dacryocystorhinostomy with drainage and culture of the abscess

Orbital lipogranulomatous inflammation harboring Mycobacterium abscessus.

PURPOSE: A case of iatrogenic Mycobacterium abscessus orbital infection is presented to call attention to its distinct histopathologic appearance, mechanism of organism, virulence, and clinical management. METHODS: Clinicopathologic analysis of an orbital infection caused by M. abscessus is described. Detailed histologic analysis is performed to provide insight into the mechanism of infection and correlate the features of the orbital infection with that of atypical mycobacteriosis at other body sites. RESULTS: A 71-year-old woman had an orbital mass in the supranasal orbit after a blepharopl

Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. abscessus Pulmonary Disease: Fatal Case in an Immunocompetent Patient.

Nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease in low-risk patients is rare and typically indolent. We report a case of Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABC) pulmonary disease in a 71-year-old immunocompetent Italian man who presented with mild dyspnoea that markedly worsened following SARS-CoV-2 infection three months before admission. High-resolution CT showed diffuse small, irregular, predominantly consolidative opacities with peripheral bronchial thickening. Extensive investigations for tuberculosis, fungal infection, other pathogens, and malignancy were negative. Respiratory cultures sub

Mycobacterium abscessus Complex Osteomyelitis of the Wrist.

Mycobacterium abscessus (M. abscessus) is a ubiquitous, rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacterium, which is known to cause life-threatening lung infections in immunocompromised individuals following exposure to contaminated injectable products. We report a case of M. abscessus osteomyelitis of the right wrist in a 28-year-old patient with a history of intravenous drug use and a recent surgical repair of the right radial artery pseudoaneurysm. The patient underwent surgical debridement of the right distal radius infection. Histopathological examination and culture of the debrided tissue rev

Etamycin as a Novel Mycobacterium abscessus Inhibitor.

The increase in drug-resistant Mycobacterium abscessus, which has become resistant to existing standard-of-care agents, is a major concern, and new antibacterial agents are strongly needed. In this study, we introduced etamycin that showed an excellent activity against M. abscessus. We found that etamycin significantly inhibited the growth of M. abscessus wild-type strain, three subspecies, and clinical isolates in vitro and inhibited the growth of M. abscessus that resides in macrophages without cytotoxicity. Furthermore, the in vivo efficacy of etamycin in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) infecti

Mycobacterium abscessus: challenges in diagnosis and treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mycobacterium abscessus is the most common rapidly growing mycobacterium that causes lung disease. This review describes recently published literature regarding M. abscessus taxonomy, environmental niche, diagnosis, management and outcome in pulmonary disease in adults and adolescents with cystic fibrosis. RECENT FINDINGS: The classification of M. abscessus subsp. abscessus, M. abscessus subsp. massiliense and M. abscessus subsp. bolletii is useful clinically because of the discovery of the erm(41) gene, which is responsible for macrolide resistance in M. abscessus. Macroli

Mycobacterium abscessus Pneumonia in an Immunonormal Infant.

A 2-month-old male with failure to thrive and respiratory symptoms was found to have bilateral pneumonia secondary to Mycobacterium abscessus . M. abscessus pulmonary infections have mainly been noted in immunocompromised children; prior reports presented similarly, though our patient is unique given the young age of presentation and lack of diagnosed immunodeficiency or underlying disease.

Mycobacterium abscessus: Shapeshifter of the Mycobacterial World.

In this review we will focus on unique aspects of Mycobacterium abscessus (MABS) which we feel earn it the designation of "shapeshifter of the mycobacterial world." We will review its emergence as a distinct species, the recognition and description of MABS subspecies which are only now being clearly defined in terms of pathogenicity, its ability to exist in different forms favoring a saprophytic lifestyle or one more suitable to invasion of mammalian hosts, as well as current challenges in terms of antimicrobial therapy and future directions for research. One can see in the various phases of M

Disseminated Disease by Mycobacterium abscessus and Mycobacterium celatum in an Immunocompromised Host.

BACKGROUND Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental pathogens that cause an increasing number of diseases, in particular in immunosuppressed patients. Diagnosing NTM infections may be difficult because clinical presentation is unspecific and resembles other conditions such as tuberculosis, lymphomas, or septicemia. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 62-year-old male with a recent history of autologous bone marrow transplantation for a follicular lymphoma admitted to our department for long-lasting remittent fever and abscess-like splenic nodules. The patient was diagnosed with mixe

Extrapulmonary Mycobacterium abscessus Infections, France, 2012-20201.

Mycobacterium abscessus infection is challenging to treat. Extrapulmonary M. abscessus infections (EP-MAB) are less common than pulmonary M. abscessus infections. To evaluate treatment regimens, we retrospectively analyzed consecutive microbiologically confirmed EP-MAB cases diagnosed in France during 2012-2020. We studied 45 patients with EP-MAB, including 14 bone and joint infections, 10 skin and soft tissue infections, and 8 lymph node infections. Most (62%) patients had no reported immunodeficiency. In 27 patients, EP-MAB followed healthcare-associated (44%) or environmental (16%) injuries

Mycobacterium abscessus drug discovery using machine learning.

The prevalence of infections by nontuberculous mycobacteria is increasing, having surpassed tuberculosis in the United States and much of the developed world. Nontuberculous mycobacteria occur naturally in the environment and are a significant problem for patients with underlying lung diseases such as bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cystic fibrosis. Current treatment regimens are lengthy, complicated, toxic and they are often unsuccessful as seen by disease recurrence. Mycobacterium abscessus is one of the most commonly encountered organisms in nontuberculous mycobac

Mycobacterium abscessus: insights from a bioinformatic perspective.

Mycobacterium abscessus is a nontuberculous mycobacterium, associated with broncho-pulmonary infections in individuals suffering from cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and pulmonary diseases. The risk factors for transmission include biofilms, contaminated water resources, fomites, and infected individuals. M. abscessus is extensively resistant to antibiotics. To date, there is no vaccine and combination antibiotic therapy is followed. However, drug toxicities, low cure rates, and high cost of treatment make it imperfect. Over the last 20 years, bioinformatic studies on M. abscessus have advanc

Treatment for Mycobacterium abscessus complex-lung disease.

Nontuberculous mycobacterial infections and colonization are becoming more prevalent worldwide. Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABC) is one of the predominant pathogens capable of a wide spectrum of infections, with 50% of infections involving the lungs. The decision to commence treatment is determined according to the severity of the disease, risk of progressive disease, presence of comorbidities, and goals of treatment. MABC is resistant to standard antituberculous agents and has variable drug susceptibility across different geographical locations, therefore, antibiotic susceptibility test

Mycobacterium abscessus: Environmental Bacterium Turned Clinical Nightmare.

Mycobacteria are a large family of over 100 species, most of which do not cause diseases in humans. The majority of the mycobacterial species are referred to as nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), meaning they are not the causative agent of tuberculous (TB) or leprosy, i.e., Mycobacterium tuberculous complex and Mycobacterium leprae, respectively. The latter group is undoubtedly the most infamous, with TB infecting an estimated 10 million people and causing over 1.2 million deaths in 2017 alone TB and leprosy also differ from NTM in that they are only transmitted from person to person and have

Repositioning rifamycins for Mycobacterium abscessus lung disease.

Introduction: The treatment of Mycobacterium abscessus lung disease faces significant challenges due to intrinsic antibiotic resistance. New drugs are needed to cure this incurable disease. The key anti-tubercular rifamycin, rifampicin, suffers from low potency against M. abscessus and is not used clinically. Recently, another member of the rifamycin class, rifabutin, was shown to be active against the opportunistic pathogen. Areas covered: In this review, the authors discuss the rifamycins as a reemerging drug class for treating M. abscessus infections. The authors focus on the differential p

Mycobacterium abscessus urinary tract infection: case report.

Urinary tract infection is a serious public health issue that predominantly affects women. In men, it is more often associated with prostatic hyperplasia and bladder catheterization. Urogenital tuberculosis presents with nonspecific with nonspecific symptoms and the diagnosis can be made in the presence of sterile leukocyturia and recurrent infection with acid urine. Non-tuberculous mycobacteria or other non-tuberculosis mycobacteria are opportunistic pathogens that inhabit the soil, water or environment surfaces, and usually cause diseases in immunocompromised individuals. Rifabutin Is Active against Mycobacterium abscessus Complex.

Lung infections caused by Mycobacterium abscessus are emerging as a global threat to individuals with cystic fibrosis and to other patient groups. Recent evidence for human-to-human transmission worsens the situation. M. abscessus is an intrinsically multidrug-resistant pathogen showing resistance to even standard antituberculosis drugs, such as rifampin. Here, our objective was to identify existing drugs that may be employed for the treatment of M. abscessus lung disease. A collection of more than 2,700 approved drugs was screened at a single-point concentration against an M. abscessus clinic

[Mycobacterium abscessus infection complicated with diabetes mellitus].

We report a case of Mycobacterium abscessus infection complicated with diabetes mellitus. A 38-year-old man with diabetes mellitus as an underlying disease, was admitted to our hospital because of a productive cough. He had had pulmonary tuberculosis two years before. Chest radiography revealed infiltration in both lung apices and chest CT showed a cavitary lesion in the left upper lobe. Gaffky 2 was found on a sputum smear. However, in the examination of PCR on sputum, not only M. tuberculosis but M. avium complex was negative, and repeated cultures of sputum were positive for M. abscessus. O
