Environmental (atypical, opportunist, other) mycobacteria were first isolated nearly a century ago. The classification of these "other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis" organisms was initially chaotic until Runyon proposed a scheme of four groups in 1959. We used electron microscopy to investigate Mycobacterium fortuitum-induced changes in the inner ears of mice. We found that the inner and outer hair cells had degenerated and disappeared in the organ of Corti. Changes in the lower turn of the cochlea were more severe than those of the upper turn while the changes of the outer hair cells were more severe than those of the inner hair cells. Disappearance, fusion and ballooning of the sensory hairs were observed in the vestibular organs. The bacterial extract also induced inner ear damage which was similar to that caused by live M. fortuitum.

We present the clinical and epidemiological features of Mycobacterium fortuitum epidemics involving 19 patients who underwent open-heart surgery. The source of the infection could not be identified. However, bone wax and homografts utilized at that time have been suspected. The case is presented of a 48-year-old woman who, in association with repeated septic temperatures, developed abscesses in the region of the right shoulder and in the right ankly. Histological examination from excisates revealed caseous tuberculoid granulomas. Mycobacterium fortuitum was isolated from the pus of both abscesses. Although the Mycobacterium fortuitum was resistant to nine commonly used tuberculostatics, it was found to be sensitive to ethionamide and capreomycine. The use of these two drugs in combination with local measures proved successful.

A 29-year-old man presented with a several month history of a non-pruritic papular eruption within a tattoo; the papules developed 1-to-2 weeks after the tattoo procedure. Mycobacterium fortuitum is a rare cause of central nervous system infection; however, shunt infection caused by this organism has not been reported. We report a case of shunt infection subsequent to insertion of a ventriculoatrial shunt for obstructive hydrocephalus caused by a cerebellar hematoma. The shunt infection was controlled by removal of the shunt and a combination of systemic and intraventricular administration of amikacin, and oral administration of ofloxacin. The case is discussed and the pertinent literature reviewed.

Orbital infection with nontuberculous mycobacteria is rare and usually presents as an inflammatory process. We report a case of a 34-year-old male hospital worker with a positive purified protein derivative skin test who had Mycobacterium fortuitum infection that presented as an orbital mass causing diplopia. This presentation is unlike previously published reports and demonstrates the importance of orbital biopsy and tissue culture.

Mycobacterium fortuitum is a rare, opportunistic pathogen most frequently contracted through contact with a contaminated source. An immunocompetent 26-year-old female patient presented to our institution with an infected lumboperitoneal (LP) shunt presenting as continued nonhealing wounds. We report Mycobacterium fortuitum (M. fortuitum) catheter-related sepsis in a five-year-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). This is the first reported case of M. fortuitum infection seen in our paediatric oncology patients. OBJECTIVE: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) cause various diseases in humans and animals. Recently, the prevalence of NTM-related disease has been on the rise, becoming an emerging public health problem. The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic susceptibility profiles of clinical isolates of Mycobacterium abscessus and Mycobacterium fortuitum. Methods.
