Mycobacterium marinum is an atypical mycobacterium found in salt and fresh water. M. marinum infection occurs following skin trauma in fresh or salt water and usually presents as a localized granuloma or sporotrichotic lymphangitis. It rarely affects the musculoskeletal system. We describe a patient who presented with subcutaneous nodules and an inflammatory arthritis that was thought to be rheumatoid arthritis, and was treated as such with corticosteroids, methotrexate, and anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha therapy, with worsening of his arthritis.

PURPOSE: To review records of 166 patients who underwent treatment for Mycobacterium marinum tenosynovitis of the hand and wrist to identify factors associated with functional outcome.
METHODS: Records of 97 men and 69 women aged 13 to 85 (mean, 50) years who underwent treatment for suspected M marinum tenosynovitis of the hand and wrist were retrospectively reviewed. All underwent open biopsy; synovectomy was performed when florid synovitis was present. Rifampicin and ethambutol were usually prescribed. Clarithromycin, minocycline and/or levofloxacin were used as adjuvants if there was drug

Current agar dilution methods for susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium marinum versus the tetracyclines have failed to show in vitro susceptibility despite good in vivo results. We found that the tetracyclines were unstable in agar and resulted in a fine haze of growth for several concentrations before complete inhibition of growth was seen. In contrast, the aminoglycosides resulted in sharp minimal inhibitory concentration endpoints, which were generally independent of the length of incubation. The problems with the tetracyclines can be lessened by shortening the incubation time to 5 days

Mycobacterium marinum is slow-growing mycobacteria, a common atypical mycobacteria that causes opportunistic infections in humans and is capable of causing disease in the skin and soft tissues. This cutaneous disorder has a wide clinical spectrum with cutaneous inflammation and granulomatous nodules that can spread along with the distribution of the lymphatic system. The infection predominantly affects the extremities. The accurate diagnosis is often challenging, requiring the presence of bacteria at the lesion. Conventional treatment usually requires a combination of antibiotics and long-term

Mycobacterium marinum infection of the hand is rare. We report the case of a 39-year-old man with M marinum infection that resulted in a chronic soft tissue infection, extensor tendon synovitis, and arthritis of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. The cause was probably tropical freshwater fishes.

Mycobacterium marinum can uncommonly cause osteomyelitis of small bones of extremities. The reported cases in literature are reviewed. We report a rare case of long bone osteomyelitis which as far as we are aware, has never been described before. Even though this organism normally causes infection in the superficial cooler regions of the body, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of long bone osteomyelitis in patients with a history of immune compromise and the appropriate treatment strategy in such cases.

3 biopsies of 3-5 week-old nodular lesions in 2 patients with so-called swimming-pool (aquarium-) granuloma have been examined by electron microscopy. The cytohistological spectrum simultaneously comprises acute exudative as well as chronic proliferative phenomena. Epithelioid cells and collagen producing fibroblasts are already conspicious in 3 week-old granuloma. According to the cytological composition the Mycobacterium marinum granuloma represents a high-turnover granuloma with immunogenic origin. It is comparable to mycobacterial diseases in the presence of well developed cell mediated im

Mycobacterium marinum is an unusual atypical mycobacterium with low pathogenicity for humans in comparison with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Among the non-tuberculous mycobacterial pathogens, Mycobacterium marinum is the most common pathogen to cause skin infections. Mycobacterium marinum infection causes chronic cutaneous lesions and in some cases deeper infections such as tenosynovitis, septic arthritis and rarely osteomyelitis. We report the case of a male patient presenting with tenosynovitis of the distal upper extremity secondary to Mycobacterium marinum infection.

Most infections of soft tissue injury sites are caused by Staphylococcus or Streptococcus and respond to beta-lactam antibiotics. Occasionally, a patient does not respond to routine antibiotics, and other possibilities must be considered. A detailed history of the event that caused the soft tissue injury can be important in the diagnosis. Two cases of Mycobacterium marinum soft tissue infection (ie, fish tank granuloma) are presented.

Ten cases of skin infection due to Mycobacterium marinum are reported from Israel. Most of the infections were contracted in natural bathing pools at Ein Feshka on the shores of the Dead Sea, south of Jericho. The lesions closely resembled those of cutaneous leishmaniasis prevalent in this region. The condition does not seem to have been detected previously in the Middle East.

UNLABELLED: PPE proteins, which are exclusive to mycobacteria, are substrates of type VII secretion systems, also unique to this genus. Their function has been an enigma for a long time, but has recently received attention for their association with nutrient uptake across the mycobacterial outer membrane. One of these nutrient transporters is PPE51, involved in glycerol and glucose uptake in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We investigated the role of PPE51 proteins in nutrient uptake and membrane integrity using the model organism Mycobacterium marinum, whose genome encodes four paralogs. We creat

Nontuberculosis mycobacterial (NTM) infections are increasing in prevalence across the world. In many cases, treatment options for these infections are limited. However, there has been progress in recent years in the development of new antimycobacterial drugs. Here, we investigate the in vitro activity of SPR719, a novel aminobenzimidazole antibiotic and the active form of the clinical-stage compound, SPR720, against several isolates of Mycobacterium ulcerans, Mycobacterium marinum and Mycobacterium chimaera. We show that SPR719 is active against these NTM species with a MIC range of 0.125-4 μ

Introduction: Mycobacterium marinum was first described in humans in 1954, known to infect fish species and contaminate water and fish products. Inoculation to humans occurs through injured skin resulting in the formation of a solitary nodule known as "fish tank granuloma." Disseminated infections have been reported in the immunocompromised and can present with extracutaneous manifestations such as arthritis and osteomyelitis. Nonaquatic transmission has not been previously reported. Case Presentation: A 63-year-old lady with rheumatoid arthritis and bronchiectasis was referred to dermatology

Mycobacterium marinum infections are rare, and they can be difficult to diagnose and treat. This may lead to further spread of the infection and complications, such as tenosynovitis, pyomyositis, and osteomyelitis. A 40-year-old previously healthy man presented with tenosynovitis of the extensor tendons on the second phalanx of his right hand. He was initially treated with steroid injections without any effect. Followingly, ulceration and an abscess developed on the dorsal site of the hand. At this point, it came to the physician's knowledge that the patient had been cleaning an aquarium befor

Mycobacterium marinum (M. marinum) is a free-living, slow grower nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), strictly related to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, that causes disease in fresh and saltwater fish and it is one of the causes of extra-pulmonary mycobacterial infections, ranging in human from simple cutaneous lesions to disseminated forms in immunocompromised hosts. The first human cases of M. marinum infection were reported from skin lesions of swimmers in a contaminated pool, in 1951, in Sweden by Norden and Linell. Two conditions are required to develop M. marinum infection: (1) skin solution
