Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is an important pathogen of cattle, causing pneumonia, arthritis and mastitis. The study described here aimed to develop an ovine model of mastitis caused by M. bovis to facilitate studies of the pathogenesis of this disease. The left mammary glands of five lactating ewes were inoculated with M. bovis, and the left glands of another five lactating ewes were inoculated with culture medium. From day 2 after inoculation, milk production in the infected left glands dropped significantly, from an average of 250 mL/day to 40 mL/day. The mean somatic cell counts (SSC) of t

The in vitro activity of 15 antibiotics was tested with 30-90 Mycoplasma bovis representative strains of bovine lung pathology in France. The distribution of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) is homogeneous with low values for spectinomycin, lincomycin, tylosin, gentamicin and baytril, intermediate for chloramphenicol and neomycin, high for nalidixic acid, Flumequine and erythromycin. The MIC distribution is heterogeneous with intermediate values for spiramycin and tetracyclines, and high values for streptomycin. For the later antibiotics, the heterogeneity of the susceptibility suggests

Mycoplasma agalactiae and Mycoplasma bovis both are responsible for respiratory conditions in sheep and goats. M. agalactiae is a major pathogen of sheep and goats and accounts for almost 90% of outbreaks of contagious agalactia syndrome in goats and almost 100% in sheep. On the basis of clinical signs and cultural, morphological, and biochemical characterization it is almost impossible to differentiate between both the species. Moreover, due to presence of genomic and proteomic similarity most of the time routine diagnostic tests fail to differentiate between them. Hence the present study was

Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is one of the important pathogens which may cause bovine respiratory disease syndrome (BRDS), and results in huge economic losses for yaks (Bos gaurus) breeding industry. However, there is limited information about M. bovis in yaks. In our study, 145 nasal mucus samples from yaks with pneumonia were collected to clarify. Bacteriological determination was carried out through biochemical identification and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) detection. And ten strains of Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) were found from collected samples. Then, the growth curve of isolated stra

Mycoplasma bovis infections are responsible for substantial economic losses in the cattle industry, have significant welfare effects and increase antibiotic use. The pathogen is often introduced into naive herds through healthy carrier animals. In countries with a low prevalence of M. bovis, transmission from less common sources can be better explored as the pathogen has limited circulation compared to high prevalence populations. In this study, we describe how M. bovis was introduced into two closed and adequately biosecure dairy herds through the use of contaminated semen during artificial i

Mycoplasma bovis is a cell-wall-less bacterium and belongs to the class Mollicutes. It is the most important etiological agent of bovine mycoplasmoses in North America and Europe, causing respiratory disease, mastitis, otitis media, arthritis, and reproductive disease. Clinical disease associated with M. bovis is often chronic, debilitating, and poorly responsive to antimicrobial therapy, resulting in significant economic loss, the full extent of which is difficult to estimate. Until M. bovis vaccines are universally available, sanitary control measures and antimicrobial treatment are the only

Mycoplasma pneumonia, caused by Mycoplasma bovis (Mycoplasmopsis bovis; M. bovis), is linked with severe inflammatory reactions in the lungs and can be challenging to treat with antibiotics. Biofilms play a significant role in bacterial persistence and contribute to the development of chronic lesions. A recent study has shown that polymicrobial interactions between species are an important factor in biofilm formation, yet the precise mechanism of biofilm formation in M. bovis remains unknown. By assuming multiple pathogen infections in the bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC), this study

Mycoplasma bovis is a major cause of pneumonia, arthritis, and mastitis in cattle and can lead to significant economic losses. Antimicrobial resistance is a concern and further limits the already short list of drugs effective against mycoplasmas. The objective of this study was to examine changes in in vitro minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of antimicrobials of aminoglycoside, fluoroquinolone, lincosamide, macrolide, pleuromutilin, phenicol, and tetracycline classes for 210 M. bovis isolates collected from 1978 to 2009. The MIC50 values of the various antimicrobials were also compared.

Mycoplasma bovis causes mastitis in dairy cows and is associated with pneumonia and polyarthritis in cattle. The present investigation included a retrospective case-control study to identify potential herd-level risk factors for M. bovis associated disease, and a prospective cohort study to evaluate the course of clinical disease in M. bovis infected dairy cattle herds in Switzerland. Eighteen herds with confirmed M. bovis cases were visited twice within an average interval of 75 d. One control herd with no history of clinical mycoplasmosis, matched for herd size, was randomly selected within

Infection by Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) can induce diseases, such as pneumonia and otitis media in young calves and mastitis and arthritis in older animals. Here, we report the finished and annotated genome sequence of M. bovis strain Hubei-1, a strain isolated in 2008 that caused calf pneumonia on a Chinese farm. The genome of M. bovis strain Hubei-1 contains a single circular chromosome of 953,114 bp with a 29.37% GC content. We identified 803 open reading frames (ORFs) that occupy 89.5% of the genome. While 34 ORFs were Hubei-1 specific, 662 ORFs had orthologs in the M. bovis type strain P

Most vaccines for protection against Mycoplasma bovis disease are made of bacterins, and they offer varying degrees of protection. Our focus is on the development of a subunit-based protective vaccine, and to that end, we have identified 10 novel vaccine candidates. After formulation of these candidates with TriAdj, an experimental tri-component novel vaccine adjuvant developed at VIDO-InterVac, we measured humoral and cell-mediated immune responses in vaccinated animals. In addition, we compared the immune responses after formulation with TriAdj with the responses measured in animals vaccinat

Mycoplasma bovis pneumonia in cattle has been epidemic in China since 2008. To investigate M. bovis pathogenesis, we completed genome sequencing of strain HB0801 isolated from a lesioned bovine lung from Hubei, China. The genomic plasticity was determined by comparing HB0801 with M. bovis strain ATCC® 25523™/PG45 from cow mastitis milk, Chinese strain Hubei-1 from lesioned lung tissue, and 16 other Mycoplasmas species. Compared to PG45, the genome size of HB0801 was reduced by 11.7 kb. Furthermore, a large chromosome inversion (580 kb) was confirmed in all Chinese isolates including HB0801, HB

Intraarticular inoculation of Mycoplasma bovis into the joints of six-week-old calves caused severe arthritis in five inoculates and mild arthritis in a sixth. Intraarticular inoculation of killed M. bovis did not cause arthritis. Arthritic calves had fever, joint swelling, lameness, neutrophilia, and intercurrent pneumonia from which M. bovis could not be recovered. Gross lesions were massive fibrinosuppurative synovitis and tenosynovitis, erosion of cartilage, and its replacement by polypoid granulation tissue. Histologic lesions were extensive ulceration of synovial membranes, leukocytic in

Two of the most important diseases of cattle are caused by mycoplasmas. Mycoplasma bovis is a world-wide bovine pathogen that can cause pneumonia, mastitis and arthritis. It has now spread to most, if not all, cattle-rearing countries. Due to its increasing resistance to antimicrobial therapy, vaccination is the principal focus of the control of infection, but effective vaccines are currently lacking. Despite being eradicated from most parts of the world, Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides, the cause of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), continues to plague sub-Saharan Africa, affectin

Mycoplasma bovis is responsible for several production diseases in cattle, including mastitis, arthritis, pneumonia, abortion and infertility. Current methodologies for detecting and identifying M. bovis are time consuming and difficult. Tests which rely on antigen or antibody detection have poor sensitivity and specificity. In this paper associated protocols for the development of a hybridization probe and PCR are described. A genomic library (SauIIIA digested) was prepared from M. bovis DNA (Colindale Reference Strain: NC10131:02) and cloned into pUC19. Colony hybridization, using a probe pr

Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is a globally significant pathogen, causing substantial economic losses to the cattle industry through pneumonia, mastitis, and arthritis. Despite persistent efforts, the development of a consistently effective vaccine remains elusive. This review synthesizes progress across inactivated, attenuated live, and subunit vaccine platforms, highlighting that even promising candidates yield only partial and inconsistent protection. We argue that these shortcomings arise from two principal, intertwined obstacles: the absence of a standardized framework for assessing vaccine

Clinical, bacteriological and serological examination of 35 calves from the age of 5 to 26 days was performed in a Holstein-Friesian dairy herd endemically infected with Mycoplasma bovis. M. bovis was isolated from 48.6% of nasal swabs taken from the calves at the age of 5 days, and from 91.4% of the same calves at the age of 26 days, indicating the gradual spread of infection. The isolation rate of Pasteurella multocida did not change much, and varied from 28.6 to 25.7%. No P. haemolytica could be detected. In addition to M. bovis and P. multocida, the herd was also infected with different vi

Mycoplasma (M.) bovis cytadhesion was studied using permanent embryonic bovine lung (EBL) cells as host system. Adherence rates were found to be strongly dependent on temperature and the mycoplasma-to-EBL ratio near the point of saturation of the attachment isotherm was determined to be 225 : 1. Mild trypsinization of viable M. bovis cells caused a measurable decrease of adherence indicating that surface proteins, among them the P26 antigen, played a major part as adhesion factors. Neuraminidase treatment of mycoplasmas led to a drastic reduction of adherence rates, which emphasizes the import

Mycoplasma bovis is one of the main bacterial pathogens involved in bovine respiratory disease (BRD) outbreaks and is commonly found in feedlots worldwide. This study investigated the genetic diversity of M. bovis within and between BRD outbreaks occurring in Spanish feedlots and compared it with results obtained elsewhere. A total of 147 M. bovis isolates from 147 BRD outbreaks in beef fattening cattle from 127 feedlots located in 30 different provinces of Spain (n = 123 feedlots) and Portugal (n=4 feedlots) were characterized by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). A total of 36 different STs

Mycoplasma bovis is a major etiological agent of pneumonia and arthritis in feedlot beef cattle. To develop a novel live vaccine against M. bovis, two attenuated M. bovis strains, P150 and P180, were tested in calves for protection against challenge with the virulent M. bovis parental strain. Twenty calves were divided into four groups of five calves each that were designated as the P150, P180, positive control (PC), and negative control (NC) groups. Each calf in the P150 and P180 groups was immunized with 10(9)CFU of P150 or P180, respectively, via the nasal cavity, and the PC and NC groups r
