Does different approach during pancreatoduodenectomy influence intestinal migrating myoelectrical complex recovery? Study in experimental pig model.

It is said that leaving intact the functional motor unit of the pylorus leads to better gastric emptying and reduces postoperative upper gut motility disturbances. However, despite obvious different surgical approach, both major pancreatoduodenectomies lead to substantial myoelectrical dysfunctions. The latter are not efficiently recognized. We compared Whipple and Longmire-Traverso procedures in terms of electromyography patterns of the upper jejunum musculature and the density of Cajal cells network. Twelve male weaned pigs underwent surgery first to implant bipolar electrodes and telemetry

Myoelectric motility patterns following open versus laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Laparoscopic surgery is associated with a lack of postoperative ileus. To determine if differences exist in postoperative motility patterns, 8 dogs were instrumented with bipolar electrodes 10-14 days prior to open (n = 4) or laparoscopic (n = 4) cholecystectomy. In both groups, Phase II activity disappeared in the first 24 h after operation. The appearance of the migrating myoelectric complex in the small intestine and the migrating colonic complex were used as criteria for recovery from postoperative ileus. Postoperative migrating myoelectric complex cycle length, migrating myoelectric compl

Trichinella spiralis: intestinal myoelectric activity during enteric infection in the rat.

The objective was to characterize changes in the host's small intestinal smooth muscle contractile activity caused by the enteric stages of the nematode, Trichinella spiralis, during primary infection. Myoelectric activity was recorded from electrodes permanently implanted on the seromuscular surface of the small bowel in conscious, unrestrained rats during the first 2 weeks postinfection (PI). Several myoelectric parameters examined collectively indicated that smooth muscle function of the small bowel was altered by infection. A decrease in contractile activity was indicated by reductions in

Sphincter of Oddi cyclic motility. Effect of translocation of the papilla in opossums.

The role of myoneural continuity between the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum in coordinating sphincter cyclic motility and the duodenal migrating myoelectric complex was studied in conscious opossums. Five animals underwent implantation of the duodenal papilla into the jejunum. Myoelectric recording was obtained from the sphincter, duodenum, and jejunum in these animals and from 5 other animals as controls. The mean spike frequency of the sphincter of controls was 1.6 per min during phase I, 4.2 per min during phase II, 11.0 per min during phase III, and 3.6 per min during phase IV of the duode

A new method for correlating pancreatic and biliary duct pressures and sphincter of Oddi electromyography.

Myoelectric activity of the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum was correlated with pancreatic and biliary duct pressures in eight opossums, in both the fasted and fed states. Four bipolar electrode pairs were implanted in the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum. A polyethylene T tube was placed in the pancreatic duct. The common duct was cannulated through a small bile duct. This method allowed pressure recording for several weeks and avoided interference with the flow of bile or pancreatic juice into the duodenum. The frequency of slow waves was the same in the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum (19 per m

[Effect of physiological stimuli on Oddi's sphincter motility].

The myoelectric activity of the sphincter of Oddi was studied both in the fasted and fed states and following administration of gastrointestinal hormones. Electromyographic recordings were obtained from 21 opossums in the fasted state and following administration of 20 Cal/kg of fat, protein, carbohydrate or isocaloric mixture of these three aliments. The proximal segment of the sphincter of Oddi generated spontaneous spike potentials that migrated to the distal segment of the sphincter. The frequency of spike potentials correlated with the migrating myoelectric complex in the duodenum. Follow

Altered myoelectric activity in the experimental blind loop syndrome.

Nutrient malabsorption and diarrhea are characteristic of the blind loop syndrome. Alterations in motility have been implicated as a cause of bacterial overgrowth, but the possibility that altered motility may result from alterations in the flora has not been explored. The purpose of this study was to characterize the myoelectric activity of the small intestine in the blind loop rat model. Eight groups of rats were studied: rats with self-filling blind loops, which develop bacterial overgrowth; rats with self-emptying blind loops, which are surgical controls that do not develop overgrowth; uno

Gastrointestinal Motility Recording Using Balloon Insertion.

Gastrointestinal motility is one of the most important physiological functions of the digestive system. The migrating motor complex (MMC) is a characteristic form of movement that occurs in the gastrointestinal tract during fasting. The MMC is present in many species, including humans. Although the physiological role of the MMC is not completely understood, its abnormalities are associated with various diseases. The measurement of gastrointestinal motility is important for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases. Thus, a system was constructed using a rubber condom and polyethylene (PE) tub

Shigella dysenteriae I enterotoxin: proposed role in pathogenesis of shigellosis.

Bacterial strains of Shigella dysenteriae I (3818-T and 3818-O) and Shigella enterotoxin altered myoelectric activity of the small intestine in New Zealand White rabbits. These agents were compared with activity caused by sterile culture broth or sterile saline. The altered myoelectric activity was characterized by two distinct complexes: repetitive bursts of action potentials (RBAP), characteristic of invasive strains of bacteria, and the migrating action potential complex (MAPC), characteristic of noninvasive bacteria. RBAP activity was the predominant myoelectric complex observed with S. dy

Effect of xylazine, cisapride, and naloxone on myoelectric activity of the ileocecocolic area in cows.

The effect of xylazine, cisapride, and naloxone on myoelectric activity of the ileum, cecum, and proximal loop of the ascending colon (PLAC) was determined in 4 healthy Jersey cows implanted with 8 pairs of bipolar electrodes. A 4 x 4 Latin square design was used. The treatments included xylazine (0.04 mg/kg of body weight), cisapride (0.08 mg/kg), naloxone (0.05 mg/kg), and 0.9% sodium chloride solution (20 ml). All treatments were administered i.v. during early phase I of the migrating myoelectric complex in the ileum. Myoelectric activity was recorded for 4 hours after treatment, and data w

[Effects of vagotomy on gastrointestinal myoelectric pattern of the conscious dog].

The gastrointestinal myoelectric activity of conscious dogs was recorded by means of chronically implanted electrodes before and after vagotomy. In healthy, conscious, intact dogs, digestive and interdigestive patterns of the myoelectric activity were recognized in the stomach and small bowel. The gastric digestive pattern was composed of cotinuous spike potential activity followed by intermittent spike potential activity, while the intestinal digestive pattern was characterized by intermittent spike potential activity. The interdigestive pattern of the stomach and small bowel consisted of the

Gastrointestinal myoelectric activity in a child with gastroschisis and ileal atresia.

Gastroschisis is frequently associated with intestinal atresia and alterations in gastrointestinal function. The authors studied gastric and small bowel myoelectric activity in a child who had a complex course and prolonged inability to tolerate oral intake after staged repair of gastroschisis and an associated ileal atresia. The child remained unable to tolerate oral intake after repair of the atresia and was reexplored 3 months later to rule out a partial small bowel obstruction, with simultaneous placement of serosal electrodes on the stomach and proximal small bowel. Persistent gastric dys

Small bowel myoelectric activity in peritonitis.

Peritonitis is associated clinically with paralytic ileus, but the physiologic mechanisms of the effects of peritonitis on bowel myoelectric activity have not been explored. Bipolar electrodes were inserted into the rats, and myoelectric control recordings were obtained for 4 h/d for 5 consecutive days. Peritonitis was then induced, and myoelectric recordings were again obtained. Each animal served as its own control. Prior to induction of peritonitis (control), phase I, II, and III myoelectric activity was present in all recordings. The cycle duration of the migrating myoelectric complex was

The migrating motor complex: control mechanisms and its role in health and disease.

The migrating motor complex (MMC) is a cyclic, recurring motility pattern that occurs in the stomach and small bowel during fasting; it is interrupted by feeding. The MMC is present in the gastrointestinal tract of many species, including humans. The complex can be subdivided into four phases, of which phase III is the most active, with a burst of contractions originating from the antrum or duodenum and migrating distally. Control of the MMC is complex. Phase III of the MMC with an antral origin can be induced in humans through intravenous administration of motilin, erythromycin or ghrelin, wh

Gastrointestinal myoelectric activity in conscious guinea pigs.

Myoelectric activity was recorded from the gastric antrum and small intestine of conscious, unrestrained guinea pigs using bipolar Ag-Ag chloride electrodes that had been previously implanted under pentobarbital sodium/Innovar anesthesia. In fasted guinea pigs, the migrating myoelectric complex (MMC) was recorded from the small intestine and was observed to propagate aborally at a speed that declined with distance from the pylorus (range of speeds of the front of phase 3: 17.5 cm/min in the duodenum to 4.1 cm/min in the ileum). The complex was not disrupted by feeding but occurred less frequen

Relationship between mast cell degranulation and jejunal myoelectric alterations in intestinal anaphylaxis in rats.

The effects of two degranulators of mast cells and intestinal anaphylaxis on jejunal myoelectric activity were compared in rats fasted for 15 hours. Attempts to antagonize the motility changes were performed using antagonists of histamine and serotonin and a cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase inhibitor. Hooded Lister rats were chronically fitted with electrodes implanted in the jejunal wall. A group of rats was sensitized to egg albumin and challenged 14 days later by intraduodenal infusion of antigen. Sensitized animals had serum titers greater than or equal to 1:64. The other group was administ

Physiological functions and potential clinical applications of motilin.

Motilin is a gastrointestinal hormone secreted by the duodenum. This peptide regulates a characteristic gastrointestinal contraction pattern, called the migrating motor complex, during the fasting state. Motilin also affects the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter, gastric motility and gastric accommodation in the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, motilin induces bile discharge into the duodenum by promoting gallbladder contraction, pepsin secretion in the stomach, pancreatic juice and insulin secretion from the pancreas. In recent years, it has been shown that motilin is associated

Biomagnetic signatures of uncoupled gastric musculature.

Gastric slow waves propagate in the electrical syncytium of the healthy stomach, being generated at a rate of approximately three times per minute in a pacemaker region along the greater curvature of the antrum and propagating distally towards the pylorus. Disease states are known to alter the normal gastric slow wave. Recent studies have suggested the use of biomagnetic techniques for assessing parameters of the gastric slow wave that have potential diagnostic significance. We present a study in which the gastric syncytium was uncoupled by mechanical division as we recorded serosal electric p

Gastric myoelectric activity during low frequency oscillation.

BACKGROUND: The normal 3 cycles per minute (3 c/m) resting activity of the stomach has been reported to shift into the range of 4-9 c/m (tachyarrhythmia) in subjects with symptoms of motion sickness. Previous studies have provoked motion sickness with an optokinetic stimulus and have not normally reported changes relative to a control condition. The present experiment investigated changes in the electrogastrogram (EGG) during a control condition and during exposure to 0.125 Hz off-axis yaw oscillation of the body. METHODS: There were 16 male subjects who participated in the two conditions 1 w
