Myofibromas of the jawbones in pediatric patients. A clinicopathological study.

BACKGROUND: Myofibromas are infrequent neoplasms that rarely occur in the jawbones. The aim of this study is to present a series of cases of these tumors affecting the jawbones in pediatric patients, as well as to describe their diagnostic methodology and therapeutic approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS: retrospective study of a series of myofibromas of the jawbones diagnosed and treated in a single medical institution in Mexico City from 2002-2022. RESULTS: There were 14 cases with a median age of 6.5 years (IQR:1-12). Mandible was affected in 8 cases (57.1%), maxilla in 5 (35.8%) and only one ca

Solitary myofibroma of the adult mandible: a case report.

A 43-year-old woman presented with a swelling in the anterior mandible appearing radiographically as a well-defined radiolucency causing mobility of the anterior teeth. A clinical diagnosis of a radicular cyst led to removal of the lesion and the associated mobile teeth. Postoperative histopathology led to a diagnosis of intraosseous solitary myofibroma of the mandible. Solitary lesions of myofibroma are exceedingly rare in adult jaws, with only 3 previously documented cases.

Myofibroma of the pinna: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Myofibromas are rare mesenchymal tumors with a predilection for the head, neck, and oral cavity. Primarily affecting infants and young children, these tumors typically manifest as superficial painless nodules. Diagnosis is confirmed through histopathological examination of a biopsy, revealing nodules characterized by spindle cell proliferation. To our knowledge, only two cases of pinna myofibroma have been previously reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present the case of a three-year-old male who developed a myofibroma of the left auricle following trauma to t

Pediatric Myofibroma of the Palate with Ulceration and Bone Destruction.

Myofibroma is a rare benign neoplasm occurring in the head and neck, arising primarily in infants and children. Frequently, myofibromas grow rapidly leading to suspicion of malignancy and the potential for overaggressive surgical excision. We aim to report a rare case of myofibroma with ulceration and bone destruction. A nine-year-old female presented with an ulcerated left hard palate mass. Open biopsy was performed with pathology suggestive of myofibroma. A left partial maxillectomy and reconstruction with a buccal advancement flap were performed. Final pathology confirmed the diagnosis of a

Infantile myofibroma: a case report and review of the literature.

This article presents a case report of a 37-week gestational age (GA) female infant (CK) whose first ultrasound at 35 weeks' GA revealed polyhydramnios, fetal ascites, and a possible diaphragmatic hernia. At birth, CK had a grossly distended abdomen, prominent abdominal veins, hepatomegaly, bounding femoral pulses, and generalized edema. Initial imaging identified an absent ductus venosus, absent segment of the inferior vena cava (IVC), and prominent superior vena cava to the right atrium. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a mass contiguous with the liver causing compression of the IVC. B

Congenital infantile myofibroma causing intrauterine death in a twin.

While infantile myofibromatosis is the most common mesenchymal tumour of infancy, only around 300 cases have been reported. The authors report a 33-year-old para 1 with an uncomplicated, dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy who was diagnosed with an intrauterine death of one twin at 36+5 weeks gestation. At caesarean section, a macerated male stillborn weighing 2.72 kg was delivered. Postmortem examination revealed a pedunculated lesion attached to the left shoulder and underlying muscle consistent with a congenital myofibroma. The cause of death was postulated to be haemorrhage from the tumo

Testicular Myofibroma in Children: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Testicular tumors are rare in the prepubertal population and often are germ cell tumors. Myofibroma is a rare spindle cell neoplasm composed of myofibroblasts, which are intermediate cells between fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. Only two prepubertal testicular myofibromas have been previously reported. While cryptorchidism is a risk factor for testicular germ cell tumors, the exact etiology of testicular myofibroma is unknown. We report a case of testicular myofibroma in a six-year-old male with a history of undescended testes, as well as a review of the literature. This case suggests a p

A Solitary Intestinal Myofibroma: A Rare Cause of Neonatal Anemia.

Solitary infantile myofibroma with visceral involvement is very rare. We present an unusual case of a solitary myofibroma with abdominal localization in a 1-day-old female neonate who presented with severe anemia and rectal bleeding. A bleeding myofibroma was found, located in the wall of the jejunum, and totally resected. In case of a solitary lesion, treatment is relatively easy and effective, with excellent prognosis after total resection. The multiple form (myofibromatosis) has a poor prognosis with low survival rates. We therefore recommend total body MRI for all patients diagnosed with m

Myofibroma of the tongue: a case suggesting autosomal dominant inheritance.

Myofibroma and myofibromatosis are rare, benign mesenchymal neoplasms composed of spindle-shaped contractile myoid cells and myofibroblasts, which generally develop in infancy or before the age of 2 years. At present, the precise etiology of this condition is unknown, with most cases reported as sporadic. However, some cases have suggested the possibility of a familial pattern of inheritance, with both dominant and -recessive patterns of inheritance have been reported. Presented here is a case of myofibroma associated with a family history of myofibromatosis, suggesting autosomal-dominant inhe

Infantile myofibromas obstructing opposite ends of the gastrointestinal tract.

Myofibromas are benign congenital tumors of soft tissue that can present at birth or during infancy in solitary or multicentric forms. Visceral myofibromas are rarely reported, but are typically symptomatic due to involvement of vital structures. We present two cases of congenital myofibromas, one obstructing the proximal esophagus and the other obstructing the distal rectum. Lessons learned from the treatment of these two patients are shared and the pertinent literature is reviewed.

Myofibroma of the oral cavity. A rare spindle cell neoplasm.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining good mental health among Emergency Department healthcare workers (ED HCW) is paramount to well-functioning healthcare. We measured mental health and COVID-19 symptoms in ED HCW at a COVID-19 epicenter. METHODS: A cross-sectional, convenience sample of adult (≥18 years) ED HCW in Brooklyn, New York, USA, who were employed at ≥50% of a full-time effort, was surveyed September-December, 2020 with reference period March-May 2020. An anonymous email-distributed survey assessed gender, age, race, healthcare worker status (clinical versus non-clinical), SARS-CoV-2 testing, nu

Myofibromas presenting in the oral cavity: a series of 9 cases.

OBJECTIVES: Solitary myofibromas are well described in the head and neck, but oral examples are less well known, and jaw lesions are rare. We studied the clinicopathologic features of a series of such lesions. DESIGN: Nine cases of oral myofibromas were retrieved from archives and studied. RESULTS: Two cases involved the mandible (intraosseous), 3 involved the gingiva, 2 involved the tongue, and 2, the hard palate. There were 4 men and 5 women, aged 9 months to 50 years (mean, 24 years; median, 27 years). Deep lesions showed typical histology, with paucicellular lobules and intervening heman

Solitary Myofibroma of the Nasal Septum: A Rare Clinical Entity.

Myofibromas are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that primarily affect infants and young children, most commonly arising in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, or bone. These tumors present with a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from self-limiting lesions to disseminated and fatal cases. In adults, the solitary form is encountered more frequently than the multicentric type. Although myofibromas may occur in the oral region of the head and neck, isolated cases involving the nasal septum are exceedingly rare. Here, we describe a case of solitary adult-onset myofibroma of the nasal septum that was

Myofibroma of the body of mandible: A case report of a solitary lesion.

Myofibromas are rare benign lesions and are often found as solitary entities. The treatment of the lesion is complete excision and the recurrence is rare. A 56-year-old female presented to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinic for further evaluation and management of a solitary lesion of the right body of the mandible that was first noticed incidentally by her referring dentist. An incisional biopsy was first performed in the clinic with the diagnosis of myofibroma. The patient was then treated with complete excision of the lesion and extraction of the adjacent teeth. The final biopsy repo

Infantile Myofibroma: A Report of Two Cases with Differential Diagnoses.

Infantile myofibromas (IMs) are benign soft-tissue tumors of children. They are of fibroblastic-myofibroblastic origin and show considerable morphological overlap with other spindle cell neoplasms. Here, we present two cases of solitary myofibromas, one in a neonate and one in a 2-year-old girl. A 2-day-old girl presented with severe respiratory distress and died during intubation. At autopsy, a myofibroma involving the oropharynx with extension up to the larynx was noted. Second case was a 2-year-girl with a myofibroma in the hard palate. IM must be differentiated from other benign and malign
