The effectiveness of orofacial myofunctional therapy in improving dental occlusion.

The most significant findings of this study definitively establish the beneficial effects of orofacial myofunctional therapy on improving dental occlusion, decreasing dental open bite, and decreasing dental overjet. The results reported are actually quite conservative because of the method of measuring. Measuring and recording every tooth unquestionably dilutes the results which would have been achieved if only the anterior teeth had been used in the calculations. Some may question the small millimeter change as being significant. The change is reflective of the overall relative value change o

Myofunctional therapy improves adherence to continuous positive airway pressure treatment.

PURPOSE: Few studies have investigated myofunctional therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of myofunctional therapy on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) adherence. METHODS: The study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01289405). Male patients with OSAS were randomly divided into four treatment groups: placebo, patients undergoing placebo myofunctional therapy (N = 24); myofunctional therapy, undergoing myofunctional therapy (N = 27); CPAP, undergoing treatment with CPAP (N = 27); and combined, un

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in Tongue Thrust Habit: A Narrative Review.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The respective review article is to provide an overview of the various exercises in orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) as a treatment modality for tongue thrust habit. Tongue thrust is the persistence of an infantile swallow pattern during late childhood. This leads to breathing and speech difficulties, open bite, and protruded teeth. During formative years, most children successfully transition from an infantile to a mature swallowing pattern. However, a few develop a retained infantile swallow and tongue thrust habit which could be due to abnormal habit like thumb sucki

Anterior open bite treated with myofunctional therapy and palatal crib.

This case report demonstrates the treatment effects of palatal crib combined with the myofunctional therapy in a child with anterior open bite (AOB) due to thumb sucking and habitual anterior and low tongue position. The patient, an 11-year-old boy, had an anterior open bite and flared and spaced upper and lower incisors. Palatal cribs in conjunction with myofunctional therapy were used to discourage sucking habit and to adapt normal tongue position. Successful correction of the AOB with adequate overjet and overbite were achieved with total treatment time of 7 months. The importance of myofun

Electropalatographic and cephalometric assessment of myofunctional therapy in open-bite subjects.

Myofunctional therapy (MFT) is often prescribed to correct tongue-thrust swallowing, with the expectation that anterior open bite (AOB) will reduce spontaneously if a more posterior tongue posture is learned. However, MFT has not been subjected to systematic evaluation. Electropalatography (EPG), which is used in speech pathology to measure dynamic tongue function for diagnostic, therapeutic and research purposes, is a suitable technique for the evaluation of MFT. This prospective clinical study assessed the effect of tongue re-education therapy on tongue function and dento-facial form in AOB

Improving Adherence to Myofunctional Therapy in the Treatment of Sleep-Disordered Breathing.

Myofunctional therapy (MT) is used to treat sleep-disordered breathing. However, MT has low adherence-only ~10% in most studies. We describe our experiences with MT delivered through a mobile health app named Airway Gym®, which is used by patients who have rejected continuous positive airway pressure and other therapies. We compared ear, nose, and throat examination findings, Friedman stage, tongue-tie presence, tongue strength measured using the Iowa oral performance instrument (IOPI), and full polysomnography before and after the 3 months of therapy. Participants were taught how to perform t

Myofunctional therapy and prefabricated functional appliances: an overview of the history and evidence.

Malocclusion represents the clinically observable endpoint of numerous genetic and environmental influences. Oral Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) aims to treat malocclusions by improving the oral environment through re-education of musculature and respiratory patterns. Although the concept of OMT has existed since the early part of the 20th Century, many of its purported benefits for the treatment of malocclusion remain undemonstrated in the scientific literature. However, a more recent application of OMT for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) suggests some benefits, although more res

The Orofacial Myofunctional Behaviour in Adults (OMA-) Project: Orofacial Myofunctional Behaviour, Orofacial Strength and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in Healthy Adults With and Without a History of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a widely adopted behavioural intervention for managing Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs). Nevertheless, there is a lack of data on the long-term outcomes of OMT. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare orofacial myofunctional status, orofacial strength, and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in healthy adults with and without a history of OMT, and to explore person- and therapy-related factors influencing long-term outcomes of OMT. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy adults (mean age 23.9 years old, SD 3.99 years) who und

Myofunctional therapy. Part 1: Culture, industrialisation and the shrinking human face.

Culture, industrialisation and the shrinking human face: Why is it important? Over the past 300,000 years, not only has the way we consume food from birth through our lifetime changed, there have also been changes related to the methods of food preparation, availability, processing, and storage. These diet-related factors, along with other epigenetic factors, have led to a widespread increase in orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) and resultant human malocclusion phenotypes (HMPs) worldwide. Currently there is an increasing need for resolution of HMPs in early childhood and associated OMD

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: A Pathophysiological Perspective.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is a multi-factorial disorder. Recently identified pathophysiological contributing factors include airway collapsibility, poor pharyngeal muscle responsiveness, a low arousal threshold, and a high loop gain. Understanding the pathophysiology is of pivotal importance to select the most effective treatment option. It is well documented that conventional treatments (continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), upper airway surgery, and dental appliance) may not always be successful in the presence of non-anatomical traits, especially in mild to moderate OSA.

Myofunctional therapy applied to upper airway resistance syndrome: a case report.

The literature presents publications on the treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) by myofunctional therapy, but there are no reports of this approach to patients with upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS). The objective was to verify the effect of myofunctional therapy in a case of UARS in relation to morphological and functional aspects of the stomatognathic system, anthropometric data, and quality of sleep. Patient, aged 61 years, diagnosed with UARS, underwent 12 sessions of myofunctional therapy for 3 months with exercises aimed at the suprahyoid, the tongue,

Serious Games in Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder Therapy for Children: An Expert Survey.

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD) is believed to affect approximately 30-50% of all children. The various causes of OMD often revolve around an incorrect resting position of the tongue and cause symptoms such as difficulty in speech and swallowing. While these symptoms can persist and lead to jaw deformities, such as overjet and open bite, manual therapy has been shown to be effective, especially in children. However, much of the therapy must be done as home exercises by children without the supervision of a therapist. Since these exercises are often not perceived as exciting by the child
