Electrical impedance myography detects dystrophin-related muscle changes in mdx mice.

BACKGROUND: The lack of functional dystrophin protein in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) causes chronic skeletal muscle inflammation and degeneration. Therefore, the restoration of functional dystrophin levels is a fundamental approach for DMD therapy. Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is an emerging tool that provides noninvasive monitoring of muscle conditions and has been suggested as a treatment response biomarker in diverse indications. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of skeletal muscles has become a standard measurement in clinical trials for DMD, EIM offers distinct advan

Optimization of resting tension for wire myography in male rat pulmonary arteries.

Wire myography to test vasomotor functions of blood vessels ex-vivo are well-established for the systemic circulation, however, there is no consensus on protocols for pulmonary arteries. We created a standardized wire myography protocol for healthy rat PAs and validated this in a pulmonary hypertension (PH) model. Vessels stretched to higher initial tensions (5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 mN) exhibited a uniform response to phenylephrine, a larger dynamic range, and lower EC50 values. The endothelium-mediated relaxation showed that moderate tensions (7.5 and 10.0 mN) produced robust responses with higher

A Wearable Force Myography-Based Armband for Recognition of Upper Limb Gestures.

Force myography (FMG) represents a promising alternative to surface electromyography (EMG) in the context of controlling bio-robotic hands. In this study, we built upon our prior research by introducing a novel wearable armband based on FMG technology, which integrates force-sensitive resistor (FSR) sensors housed in newly designed casings. We evaluated the sensors' characteristics, including their load-voltage relationship and signal stability during the execution of gestures over time. Two sensor arrangements were evaluated: arrangement A, featuring sensors spaced at 4.5 cm intervals, and ar

Electrical impedance myography in the evaluation of the tongue musculature in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical impedance myography (EIM) quantifies muscle health and is used as a biomarker of muscle abnormalities in neurogenic and myopathic diseases. EIM has yet to be evaluated in the tongue musculature in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), who often show clinical bulbar signs. METHODS: The lingual musculature of 19 subjects with motor neuron disease and 21 normal participants was assessed using EIM, strength and endurance testing, and clinical assessment. RESULTS: Tongue musculature in the ALS group was characterized by significantly smaller phase (Ph) and gr

Magnetic resonance imaging correlates with electrical impedance myography in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical impedance myography (EIM) has been proposed as a noninvasive biomarker of muscle composition in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Here we determine the associations of EIM variables with muscle structure measured by MRI. METHODS: We evaluated 20 patients with FSHD at two centers, comparing EIM measurements (resistance, reactance, and phase at 50, 100, and 211 kHZ) recorded from bilateral vastus lateralis, tibialis anterior, and medial gastrocnemius muscles to MRI skin and subcutaneous fat thickness, MRI T1-based muscle severity score (T1 muscle score), an

Assessing Myogenic Response and Vasoactivity In Resistance Mesenteric Arteries Using Pressure Myography.

Small resistance arteries constrict and dilate respectively in response to increased or decreased intraluminal pressure; this phenomenon known as myogenic response is a key regulator of local blood flow. In isobaric conditions small resistance arteries develop sustained constriction known as myogenic tone (MT), which is a major determinant of systemic vascular resistance (SVR). Hence, ex vivo pressurized preparations of small resistance arteries are major tools to study microvascular function in near-physiological states. To achieve this, a freshly isolated intact segment of a small resistance

Electrical impedance myography for the detection of muscle inflammation induced by λ-carrageenan.

Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a technique for the assessment of muscle health and composition and has been shown to be sensitive to a variety of muscle pathologies including neurogenic atrophy and connective tissue deposition. However, it has been minimally studied in pure inflammation. In this study, we sought to assess EIM sensitivity to experimental inflammation induced by the localized intramuscular injection of λ-carrageenan. A total of 91 mice underwent 1-1000 kHz EIM measurements of gastrocnemius using a needle array, followed by injection of either 0.3% λ-carrageenan in phosp

Guidelines to electrode positioning for human and animal electrical impedance myography research.

The positioning of electrodes in electrical impedance myography (EIM) is critical for accurately assessing disease progression and effectiveness of treatment. In human and animal trials for neuromuscular disorders, inconsistent electrode positioning adds errors to the muscle impedance. Despite its importance, how the reproducibility of resistance and reactance, the two parameters that define EIM, are affected by changes in electrode positioning remains unknown. In this paper, we present a novel approach founded on biophysical principles to study the reproducibility of resistance and reactance

Bioimpedance meets biomechanics: Wearable electrical impedance myography encodes fascicle and activation dynamics.

Modern assistive robotic control demands parallel advancements in wearable, noninvasive sensing. Electrical impedance myography (EIM)-a noninvasive, wearable technology for dynamically measuring tissue electrical impedance properties-is a promising but poorly established solution for quantifying muscle force and fatigue, given that prior approaches have relied on black-box algorithms when attempting to relate EIM to muscle physiology or have extrapolated relationships between EIM and muscle force from singular, isolated movements. Here, we elucidate direct relationships between EIM and muscle

Unobtrusive, natural support control of an adaptive industrial exoskeleton using force myography.

Repetitive or tiring tasks and movements during manual work can lead to serious musculoskeletal disorders and, consequently, to monetary damage for both the worker and the employer. Among the most common of these tasks is overhead working while operating a heavy tool, such as drilling, painting, and decorating. In such scenarios, it is desirable to provide adaptive support in order to take some of the load off the shoulder joint as needed. However, even to this day, hardly any viable approaches have been tested, which could enable the user to control such assistive devices naturally and in rea

An improved electrical impedance myography (EIM) tongue array for use in clinical trials.

OBJECTIVES: Electrical impedance myography (EIM) measurements of the tongue could provide valuable information about bulbar dysfunction in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A prototype tongue depressor EIM array produced gag reflexes. The objectives of this study were to determine the reliability, mean phase values, and tolerability of tongue EIM measurements using a smaller electrode array. METHODS: Tongue EIM measurements were performed in a total of 31 healthy individuals and four neuromuscular patients with lingual abnormalities. Reliability was assessed by calculating the intraclass c

Wire Myography to Study Vascular Tone and Vascular Structure of Isolated Mouse Arteries.

Atherosclerosis is characterized by endothelial dysfunction and alterations in vascular reactivity, which can be investigated by wire myography. The method allows ex vivo monitoring of the transversal isometric tension developed by a vessel segment in response to different pathophysiological stimuli. Here we describe in detail how to use the wire myograph to evaluate endothelial function and vasoconstrictor or vasodilator properties of the vessel, as well as to identify and characterize different factors and molecular pathways that control vascular tone. We also describe how to use the wire my

Wire Myography for Dorsal Aorta and Mesenteric Resistance Arteries from Mice and Rats.

Wire myography is a widely used ex vivo technique for the quantitative assessment of vascular function in isolated arteries. Because large conduit and small resistance arteries differ fundamentally in structure and physiological role, analyzing both vessel classes in parallel using arteries harvested from the same mouse or rat enables paired comparisons that reduce inter-animal variability and reveal vessel-specific functional changes. This article presents a step-by-step protocol for assessing vascular reactivity in isolated murine conduit and resistance arteries using isometric wire myograph

A database of multimodal myography and hand kinematics during realistic daily life activities.

This paper introduces MyoKi, a database capturing multimodal myography and hand kinematics during various realistic daily life activities. MyoKi emphasizes the complexity of real-world settings, addressing limitations of existing databases, which often reflect controlled laboratory conditions. The database includes two subsets of participants designed to evaluate different sensor configurations. Both subsets contain surface electromyography (sEMG) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) data, along with hand kinematics covering 18 finger and wrist joints. For the second subset, additional force my

Assessment of Low-Density Force Myography Armband for Classification of Upper Limb Gestures.

Using force myography (FMG) to monitor volumetric changes in limb muscles is a promising and effective alternative for controlling bio-robotic prosthetic devices. In recent years, there has been a focus on developing new methods to improve the performance of FMG technology in the control of bio-robotic devices. This study aimed to design and evaluate a novel low-density FMG (LD-FMG) armband for controlling upper limb prostheses. The study investigated the number of sensors and sampling rate for the newly developed LD-FMG band. The performance of the band was evaluated by detecting nine gesture

Electrical Impedance Myography for Assessing Paraspinal Muscles of Patients with Low Back Pain.

The objective of this study was to determine the potential value of electrical impedance myography (EIM) for assessing lumbosacral paraspinal muscle (LPM) condition in lower back pain (LBP) patients. Standard methods for assessing the condition of LPMs, such as magnetic resonance imaging, are inconvenient and expensive. One tool that could be useful for this purpose is electrical impedance myography (EIM) a technique that can be performed rapidly at the bedside. After undergoing a screening history and examination, subjects were studied with the mView EIM device (Myolex, Inc, Boston). Bilatera
