Our experience with myringoplasty by the transtympanic "push through' technique in paediatric patients is described. We have used this method in 40 children utilizing autologous temporalis fascia as the graft material. The procedures were all performed as day cases under general anaesthesia. The overall success rate for perforation closure was 77.5% at 6 months which is comparable to conventional methods. We conclude that the "push-through' technique is a safe, simple, reliable and cost-effective procedure that can be performed as a day case in paediatric patients. It avoids the necessity for

It is often reported that the repair of subtotal perforations is less successful than that of smaller perforations, mainly because it is technically more difficult. The author's surgical technique for subtotal perforations is presented and the results compared with that of myringoplasty for smaller perforations. The study shows that subtotal perforations are associated with a higher incidence of abnormal middle ear mucosa (chi 2 = 11.75, d.f. = 2) and damage to the malleus (chi 2 = 5.60, d.f. = 1) than smaller perforations. However, the success rate of subtotal perforation closure (92.5%) is a

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of fasciaform myringoplasty as a means to repair large tympanic membrane perforations in children.
DESIGN: Retrospective review of the records of 26 patients who underwent 29 consecutive fasciaform myringoplasty surgeries over a 47-month period. Patients were followed up from 2 to 47 months postoperatively.
SETTING: Academic tertiary care children's hospital.
PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-six patients (5 to 16 years old), with tympanic membrane perforations (25% to 95%) underwent a fasciaform myringoplasty procedure. The perforations were caused by extrusion of ve

Sixty-nine ears with perforation of the tympanic membrane were reviewed. All had undergone myringoplasty by the interlay method. The average period for complete epithelization was 16.1 days after surgery. Neither blunting of the anterior tympanomeatal angle nor lateralization of the tympanic membrane was observed. The success rate was 94.2% for the initial surgery, when "success" is defined as closure of the perforation and complete epithelization (dry ear). The surgical technique and various advantages of the interlay method of myringoplasty are described.

In comparison to chronic non-suppurative otitis media, the incidence of chronic suppurative otitis media is no less in developing countries. This is due to lack of consciousness, low socioeconomic condition, and increased susceptibility to upper respiratory tract infection. Thirty-two ears of 20 patients between the ages of 5 and 12 years are included in this study who underwent myringoplasty, and were followed up for 3 months to 1 year postoperatively. Successful take of the graft was 60% in patients of 5 to 8 year age group, and 72.7% in 9 to 12 year age group. Postoperative air conduction w

A long-term follow-up was performed of 540 myringoplasties that were considered to be successful 3 months after operation. The ears were observed to 12 years, and it was found that 70.8% of the eardrums were intact, fully epithelialized, and without retraction. In 22.4% success was only partial, because there was a small reperforation, a slight retraction of the eardrum, or an epithelial defect. In 7.6% of the eardrums deterioration occurred over the years, for the above three reasons, to a degree that turned an initial successful outcome of the operation into a failure. Of the various factors

During a six-year period, homograft tympanic membranes have been used successfully for myringoplasty or tympanoplasty in 85% of 175 cases. This percentage is not as high as might be expected with fascia, and the homografts have not been as dependable in the wet, draining ear. However, the results do show that the homograft is an acceptable grafting material. The eardrums are not suggested as substitutes for fascia, but should be available for difficult cases. Their use is indicated in large or total defects to restore the natural anatomical conical shape of the eardrum, particularly in congeni

GOAL: The aim of this study was to assess hearing improvement after myringoplasty.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a retrospective study with a total of 119 cases undergoing myringoplasty at our Department analyzing the air conduction thresholds before and 6 months after surgery. We conducted an analysis of variance for the different variables and contrasted hypotheses using Student's T-test.
RESULTS: We obtained a hearing improvement at all frequencies, except at 8.000 Hz, at which surgery noticeably worsens hearing. The lower the frequency, the higher the hearing improvement, with the bes

In 1990, the authors first started performing myringoplasty with temporal fascia homografts and fibrin glue in the outpatient clinic with consequent reduction in expenditure, time and patient physical stress. Of primary consideration in homogeneous transplantation is the possibility of infection by HIV or other pathogens from donors. The fascial grafts were submitted to treatment with 99% ethyl alcohol and pasteurization resulting in the inactivation of pathogenic viruses. This paper discusses methods, eardrum perforation closing rates, hearing improvement and future application of myringoplas

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that significantly influence myringoplasty success.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of all adults and children who underwent myringoplasty from January 2005 to January 2010 in a teaching hospital. Outcome measures were tympanic membrane perforation closure and air-bone gap closure to within 20 dB HL. The factors assessed were the surgeon grade, pre-operative condition of the ipsilateral and contralateral middle ears, perforation site, perforation size, graft material, and whether simultaneous cortical mastoidectomy was performed. Factors with statis

CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study, it is believed that, in appropriate patients with tympanic membrane perforation, the endoscopic butterfly cartilage myringoplasty can be applied, with a shorter operation time, high graft success rate, and low risk of complications.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of the endoscopic butterfly cartilage myringoplasty in terms of the graft success rate and hearing gain.
METHODS: Forty-five ears of the 42 patients who were subjected to endoscopic butterfly cartilage myringoplasty surgery between January 2013 and Decembe

BACKGROUND: Myringoplasty is one of the various surgical techniques for the management of chronic supurative otitis media of tubotympanic type (CSOM-TT). The presence of a perforation of tympanic membrane with intermittent discharge and hearing loss of conductive nature are the indications of myringoplasty. It is a beneficial procedure done for closing tympanic membrane perforation and improving hearing.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess hearing improvement after myringoplasty within ten weeks following surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 50 patients

We report a retrospective study about 80 myringoplasties performed on 75 patients. The single occlusive myringoplasty technique was undergone in 33.7 percent of cases, while the tympanomeatal flap procedure was used in 66,2 percent. The grafted material was temporal muscle fascia (63.7%) or tragus perichondrium (36.2%). In 30 percent of instances some retouches were achieved on the ossicular chain. The anatomic success rate accounted for 67.5% and a good functional issues for 59.7% of cases.

The long-term results of myringoplasty in children, including closure of perforation and hearing improvement, were reviewed in relation to age, condition of the operated-on ear, and condition of the untreated ear. The overall success rate in 155 operations evaluated one year postoperatively was 79%. Children in the 5- to 8-year-old age group had a success rate comparable to that of older (9- to 12-year-old) children (77.7% vs 80.4%). Where graft failure occurred, it was usually within one year of surgery. The outcome of surgery could not be related to the presence or absence of chronic otitis
