CONTEXT: The resin from the trunk wood of Virola oleifera (Schott) A. C. Smith (Myristicaceae) is used in folk medicine to hasten wound repair and to treat pain and inflammatory conditions, and our previous report indicated the anti-oxidative properties in other oxidative stress model.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effects of resin from V. oleifera in two experimental models of gastric ulcer oxidative-stress dependent.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Plant material was collected and the resin was subjected to partitioning with organic solvents. The buthanol fraction was subjected to chroma

CONTEXT: Nutmeg [Myristica fragrans Houtt. (Myristicaceae)] has a long-standing reputation of psychoactivity. Anecdotal reports of nutmeg use as a cheap marijuana substitute, coupled to previous studies reporting a cannabimimetic-like action, suggest that nutmeg may interact with the endocannabinoid system.
OBJECTIVE: The study evaluates nutmeg fractions for binding capacity with various CNS receptors and their potential interaction with the endocannabinoid system.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dichloromethane (DF) and ethyl acetate (EF) fractions were prepared from the methanol extract of powdered

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Virola elongata is a tree species belonging to the Myristicaceae family, distributed in the North and Midwest regions of Brazil, in the phytogeographic domain of the Amazon. The aqueous infusion or the hydroethanolic macerate of the stem bark of V. elongata are used in Brazilian and Ecuadorian indigenous folk medicine for several ethnopharmacological purposes, principally, in the treatment of stomach pain, indigestions, and gastric ulcers. This study was aimed to investigate the gastroprotective activity of this plant in order to support its popular use with sci

Obesity is a prominent global public health challenge. Current drugs used for its treatment have significant side effects. Medicinal plants, rich in phytochemicals, offer anti-obesity effects through various mechanisms, including enzyme inhibition. The current research evaluated ethanolic extracts from more than 100 plants to address obesity. The dried plant organs were ground and macerated in ethanol 70 % to generate powder extracts. Physalis minima (62.5 %) and Terminalia chebula (59.1 %) yielded the highest amount of extracts. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined using th

Inflammatory reactions in the CNS, resulting from a loss of control and involving a network of non-neuronal and neuronal cells, are major contributors to the onset and progress of several major neurodegenerative diseases. Therapeutic strategies should therefore keep or restore the well-controlled and finely-tuned balance of immune reactions, and protect neurons from inflammatory damage. In our study, we selected plants of the Malaysian rain forest by an ethnobotanic survey, and investigated them in cell-based-assay-systems and in living brain tissue cultures in order to identify anti-inflammat

This study isolated pure compounds from Canna edulis aerial parts and assessed their antiplatelet and anticoagulant potential. Structural elucidation resulted in the identification of two new compounds: caneduloside A (1) and caneduloside B (2), and eleven known compounds: 6'-acetyl-3,6,2'-tri-p-coumaroyl sucrose (3), 6'-acetyl-3,6,2'-triferuloyl sucrose (4), tiliroside (5), afzelin (6), quercitrin (7), 2-hydroxycinnamaldehyde (8), cinnamic acid (9), 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid (10), dehydrovomifoliol (11), 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde (12), and (S)-(-)-rosmarinic acid (13). The predominantly tropical tribe Paurocephalini of jumping plant-lice currently consists of seven genera and 94 described species worldwide, of which the genera Klyveria Burckhardt et al. and Melanastera Serbina et al. have been recorded from Brazil with two and one species, respectively. Here we review the taxonomy of the Brazilian species based on material collected from extensive fieldwork carried out in 15 states over the last decade. One species of Klyveria and 59 species of Melanastera are newly described, bringing the number of extant Klyveria spp. to three (both in Brazil and worldwide

Frugivorous vertebrates, as seed dispersers and predators, play critical roles in forest ecosystem dynamics. Understanding their responses to human disturbances is essential for assessing ecosystem functioning and guiding conservation programs. Using 60 camera traps at nutmeg trees (Virola kwatae and V. michelii, Myristicaceae), we monitored terrestrial and arboreal frugivores across three forest sites in French Guiana submitted to various human disturbances: a protected mature forest (least disturbed), a formerly exploited forest (intermediately disturbed), and a forest near a road subject to

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ethnopharmacological surveys were conducted in two regions of Gabon. This led to highlighting some of the medicinal plants used by local populations in the management of HIV/AIDS opportunistic diseases. Two regions with the highest occurrence of HIV/AIDS cases were visited and ethnopharmarcological data was gathered. These regions were the Estuaire Province (Libreville and its neighborhood) and the Haut-Ogooué Province (Franceville and its neighborhood). The opportunistic diseases and symptomatic conditions considered during this study were: diarrhea, respirator

BACKGROUND: Nutmeg is the seed kernel inside the fruit of Myristica fragrans Houtt. (Myristicaceae). It possesses various pharmacological activities but is used in Cameroon only for its flavor in making cakes. The present study thus aimed to investigate the in vitro antibacterial activity and antibiotic modifying activities of crude seed kernel methanol extract (MFS), fractions (MFSa-e) as well as 3',4',7-trihydroxyflavone from Myristica fragrans against a panel of multi-drug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria.
METHODS: The modified rapid p-iodonitrotetrazolium chloride (INT) colorimetric

The anthelmintic activity of extracts from Chenopodiumambrosioides, Pycnanthusangolensis and Nutridesintox was in vitro and in vivo investigated, against Toxocaracanis larvae. The in vitro assays results showed that the aqueous extract of Nutridesintox was the most effective, followed by C. ambrosioides extracts, hexane, dichloromethane and the infusion. P. angolensis extracts showed a lower anthelmintic activity compared to the other natural products. For the in vivo assays, Nutridesintox, the hexane extract and the infusion of C. ambrosioides were administered orally to T. canis-infected mic

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Virola oleifera (Schott) A.C. Smith, Myristicaceae, has been widely used in traditional medicine in Brazil to treat rheumatic pain, joint tumours, skin diseases, halitosis, bronchial asthma, haemorrhoids, and intestinal worms. Recently, research data showed the antioxidant properties in several oxidative stress-related models. However, there is no experimental evidence supporting its potential use in managing rheumatic diseases and bone malignancies.
AIMS OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the therapeutic potential of the resin from Virola oleifera in joint and bone dis
