Lipid profiles in Himasthla elongata and their intermediate hosts, Littorina littorea and Mytilus edulis.

In this research, the lipid profiles in rediae and free-living larvae (cercariae) of the trematodes Himasthla elongata were studied. It was shown that the lipid profiles of cercariae and rediae reflect the selective accumulation of membrane phospholipids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In addition, infected tissues' lipid compositions in the intermediate hosts Littorina littorea (whole organism) and Mytilus edulis (foot) were studied. Modifications in the molluscs' lipid compositions were mainly caused by the parasites' metabolic requirements, as the parasites are unable to engage in de novo

The effects of elevated CO2 on shell properties and susceptibility to predation in mussels Mytilus edulis.

For many species, ocean acidification (OA) is having negative physiological consequences on their fitness and resilience to environmental change, but less is known about the ecosystem effects of these changes. Here, we assess how OA conditions predicted for 2100 affects the biological functioning of an important habitat-forming species Mytilus edulis and its susceptibility to predation by a key predator, the gastropod Nucella lapillus. Change in three physiological parameters in Mytilus were assessed: (1) shell thickness and cross-sectional surface area, (2) body volume and (3) feeding rate, a

Effects of nanoparticles in Mytilus edulis gills and hepatopancreas - a new threat to marine life?

Every day new extraordinary properties of nanoparticles (a billionth of a meter) are discovered and worldwide millions are invested into nanotechnology and nanomaterials. Risks to marine organisms are still not fully understood and biomarkers to detect health effects are not implemented, yet. We used the filter feeding blue mussel as a model to analyse uptake and effects of nanoparticles from glass wool, a new absorbent material suggested for use in floating oil spill barriers. In both, gills and hepatopancreas we analysed uptake of nanomaterials by transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) in uns

Assortative fertilization and selection at larval stage in the mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis.

Assortative mating (prezygotic isolation) and reduced hybrid fitness (postzygotic isolation) are typically invoked to explain the stability of hybrid zones. In the tension zone model, these factors work in opposition to migration, which promotes genetic homogeneity. Many marine animals migrate over long distances through a planktonic larval stage. Therefore, strong reproductive isolation is needed to maintain stable marine hybrid zones. However, surprisingly little is known about mating preferences and hybrid fitness in marine organisms. Smooth-shelled mussels (Mytilus spp.) form a well-known

Nanopollutants (nZnO) amplify hypoxia-induced cellular stress in a keystone marine bivalve, Mytilus edulis.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) are increasingly utilized in industrial, medical, and personal care products, particularly as the main ingredient in sunscreens, raising concerns about their environmental impact, especially in coastal ecosystems. The Baltic Sea, experiencing severe eutrophication, faces persistent hypoxia due to excessive nutrient runoff and limited water exchange. Simultaneously, coastal pollution from industrial and urban activities introduces nZnO, a highly biotoxic nanopollutant. The combined effects of hypoxia and nZnO contamination may amplify environmental stress, yet th

Mytilus edulis foot protein mimics for tailoring long-acting endothelium-mimicking anti-thrombotic surfaces.

Surfaces with enduring and superior antithrombotic properties are essential for long-term blood-contacting devices. While current surface engineering strategies integrating anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents show promise in mimicking the non-thrombogenic properties of the endothelium, their long-term effectiveness remains limited. Here, we report an easy-to-perform, dual-biomimetic surface engineering strategy for tailoring long-acting endothelium-mimicking anti-thrombotic surfaces. We first designed a Mytilus edulis foot protein-5 (Mefp-5) mimic rich in amine and clickable alkynyl groups

Antifouling activities of N-substituted imides: antimicrobial activities and inhibition of Mytilus edulis phenoloxidase.

In the search for novel biodegradable antifouling agents, a series of imides (N-substituted maleimides and succinimides) have been synthesized. A large majority of N-substituted maleimides and succinimides showed an antimicrobial activity toward gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi of marine origin with minimal inhibition concentrations in the range of 6 to 24 microg/ml. The imides with an alkyl substituent showed higher activities than aromatic analogues, but structure-activity relationships were not clearly established. Some compounds were powerful inhibitors of Mytilus edulis

Opioid inhibition of dopamine release from nervous tissue of Mytilus edulis and Octopus bimaculatus.

Morphine and D-Ala2-Met-enkephalin as well as other opioids suppress potassium-stimulated release of 3H-labeled dopamine from neurons tissue of two marine invertebrates, Mytilus edulis and Octopus bimaculatus. Naloxone reverses the inhibitory effects in both species. Potassium-stimulated release of 3H-labeled serotonin is not altered by opioids. It is postulated that opiate receptors and their endogenous effectors play a prominent role in regulation of transmitter release in invertebrates.

Toxicity of copper oxide nanoparticles in the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis: a redox proteomic investigation.

Relatively little is known about the fate and effects of nanomaterials even in relatively simple organisms such as Mytilus edulis. Here, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NP) are shown to induce dose-dependent toxic effects at the biochemical, physiological and tissue levels in the blue mussel. Stable CuO NP suspensions were sized by differential light scattering and nanoparticle tracking analysis to yield average particle diameters of approximately 100 nm. These were administered to M. edulis, at doses of 400, 700 and 1000 ppb. Ingested copper was predominantly located in the gill tissue with s

The effects of organic and inorganic pollutants on intracellular phosphate compounds in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis).

1. The effects of sublethal concentrations of organic and inorganic pollutants on intracellular energy-rich phosphates in blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, were investigated by in vivo 31P-NMR. 2. Formaldehyde (30 and 10 mg/l), phenol, pyridine, mercury and cadmium gave marked reductions in phosphoarginine and, in some cases, the ATP amounts. The reduction in high-energy phosphate was accompanied by an increase in inorganic phosphate in all groups. 3. A "phosphorus index", the product of the ratios between phosphoarginine and inorganic phosphate, and ATP and inorganic phosphate, is suggested, whic

First Report of Zoonotic Genotype of Giardia duodenalis in Mussels (Mytilus edulis) from Patagonia Argentina.

Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) are among the most consumed fishery products globally. Foodborne outbreaks of mussel-associated infections by viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens have been reported in the last years. In this study, we investigated the occurrence, genetic diversity, and zoonotic potential of the diarrhea-causing enteric protozoan Giardia duodenalis in blue mussels from Caleta Córdova in Chubut Province, southeast Patagonia, Argentina. A total of 344 free-living blue mussels were collected and distributed in 53 aliquots of pooled mussel tissue (each containing 5‒7 specimens)

Influence of Himasthla elongata (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) metacercariae on heart rate in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis).

Whether metacercariae of the digenean Himasthla elongata (Himasthlidae) are harmful to their secondary intermediate hosts, the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a disputable question. To shed light on this issue, we performed field monitoring of the heart rate (HR) in mussels infected with H. elongata over a period of 1.5 years. We observed a significant rise in HR in infected mussels, but only 1 year after infection and at temperatures of 15-17 °C. HR variance also grew sharply in infected mussels within the same temperature range. We also detected a decreased ability of infected mussels to com

Differential impacts of ocean acidification and alkalinization on shell microstructure and molecular responses in Mytilus edulis.

Anthropogenic CO2 emissions are intensifying ocean acidification (OA), disrupting carbonate chemistry and threatening marine calcifiers such as mussels. Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) has been proposed as a marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) strategy that can also mitigate OA, but its ecological safety for aquaculture species remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the short-term (21 days) responses of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis to OA (pH 7.3) and NaOH-based OAE (pH 9.0) using integrated shell microstructure analysis and transcriptomics. The results showed that while survival ra

Differential sensitivity of hemocyte subpopulations (Mytilus edulis) to aged polyethylene terephthalate micro- and nanoplastic particles.

Bivalve hemocytes, particularly granulocytes and hyalinocytes, play a crucial role in cell-mediated immunity. However, their interactions with aged plastic particles, exhibiting altered properties that more closely resemble those in natural environments, remain largely underexplored. This study assesses the differential responses of hemocyte subpopulations (Mytilus edulis) to chemically aged polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastic (MPs) and nanoplastic (NPs) particles across multiple cellular effect endpoints. Particle characteristics were analyzed using Single Particle Extinction and Sc

Dual transcriptomics reveals co-evolutionary mechanisms of intestinal parasite infections in blue mussels Mytilus edulis.

On theoretical grounds, antagonistic co-evolution between hosts and their parasites should be a widespread phenomenon but only received little empirical support so far. Consequently, the underlying molecular mechanisms and evolutionary steps remain elusive, especially in nonmodel systems. Here, we utilized the natural history of invasive parasites to document the molecular underpinnings of co-evolutionary trajectories. We applied a dual-species transcriptomics approach to experimental cross-infections of blue mussel Mytilus edulis hosts and their invasive parasitic copepods Mytilicola intestin

Mercury(II) Binding to Metallothionein in Mytilus edulis revealed by High Energy-Resolution XANES Spectroscopy.

Of all divalent metals, mercury (HgII ) has the highest affinity for metallothioneins. HgII is considered to be enclosed in the α and β domains as tetrahedral α-type Hg4 Cys11-12 and β-type Hg3 Cys9 clusters similar to CdII and ZnII . However, neither the four-fold coordination of Hg nor the existence of Hg-Hg atomic pairs have ever been demonstrated, and the HgII partitioning among the two protein domains is unknown. Using high energy-resolution XANES spectroscopy, MP2 geometry optimization, and biochemical analysis, evidence for the coexistence of two-coordinate Hg-thiolate complex and four-

A procedure for large-scale purification of domoic acid from toxic blue mussels (Mytilus edulis).

Pure domoic acid is required for use in research to investigate the biological effects of this new shellfish toxin. It may also prove to be a useful tool in studies exploring the basis of Alzheimer's disease. In this paper we describe a procedure which is effective in obtaining adequate quantities of pure domoic acid from blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). The procedure involves tissue homogenization, treatment of homogenate with chloroform and methanol, and separation of different phases with the addition of water. The aqueous-methanolic phase (upper layer) contains water soluble components includ

Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)-A bioindicator of marine water contamination by protozoa: Laboratory and in situ approaches.

AIMS: The protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis and Toxoplasma gondii are identified as public health priorities and are present in a wide variety of environments including the marine ecosystem. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that the marine bivalve blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) can be used as a tool to monitor the contamination of marine waters by the three protozoa over time. METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to achieve a proof of concept, mussels were exposed to three concentrations of G. duodenalis cysts and Cryptosporidium parvum/T. gondii oocysts for 21

Buried Alive: The Behavioural Response of the Mussels, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis to Sudden Burial by Sediment.

Sedimentation in the sea occurs through natural processes, such as wave and tidal action, which can be exacerbated during storms and floods. Changes in terrestrial land use, marine aggregate extraction, dredging, drilling and mining are known to result in substantial sediment deposition. Research suggests that deposition will also occur due to the modern development of marine renewable energy. The response to individual burial under three depths of sediment, three sediment fractions and five burial durations was investigated in two mussel species, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis in specia

Adaptive evolution of M3 lysin--a candidate gamete recognition protein in the Mytilus edulis species complex.

Marine invertebrate gamete recognition proteins (GRPs) are classic examples of rapid adaptive evolution of reproductive proteins, and hybridizing Mytilus blue mussels allow us to study the evolution of GRPs during speciation following secondary contact. Even with frequent hybridization, positive selection drives divergence of M7 lysin, one of the three Mytilus egg vitelline envelope (VE) lysins. Mytilus trossulus and M. edulis form a broad hybrid zone in the Canadian Maritimes and eastern Maine, isolated by strong (but partial) gamete incompatibility. M7 lysin, however, is an unlikely GRP cont
