Myxobolus nagaraensis is a species of myxozoa, a parasitic cnidarian that moves between fish and annelids, and was described in 2007 as a parasite of the genus Rhinogobius. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the actual status of parasitism of Rhinogobius flumineus by M. nagaraensis. Collection surveys conducted in the fall/winter season confirmed infestation at 18 of 38 locations of tributaries of the Nagara river. At all eight sites with high infection rates (> 9%) during fall/winter, the number of parasitized individuals decreased dramatically in spring/summer. The body length o

A nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was developed to amplify a segment of the 18S rRNA gene from Myxobolus cerebralis, the agent causing whirling disease in salmonid fish. The PCR amplifies a 415 bp amplicon that was identified by dideoxynucleotide terminated sequencing to be identical to the known 18S rDNA sequence of M. cerebralis. There was no amplification of genomic DNA from 4 other myxosporean parasites of salmonid fish from the genus Myxobolus including M. arcticus, M. insidiosus, M. neurobius, and M. squamalis. The efficacy of the PCR test to detect early infections was demon

The myxozoan parasite Myxobolus xiantaoensis is a fin pathogen of commercially important yellow catfish Tachysurus fulvidraco Richardson, 1846, in the freshwater ponds of China. In the present work, four geographical isolates of M. xiantaoensis were sampled from the fins of yellow catfish. It was found that the spores of four isolates exhibited few markable differences in morphometrics. The small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequences of four isolates were conspecific to the SSU rDNA sequence of M. xiantaoensis. No genetic level variation was observed, even in the characteristically more v

The genus Myxobolus comprises cnidarians belonging to the subphylum Myxozoa. These parasites have great pathogenic potential in animals, mainly in teleost fish worldwide, where studies have demonstrated great diversity, but with a high possibility of novelty in the face of the existing ichthyofauna. In this context, the present work characterizes morpho-molecularly Myxobolus cajueiroi n. sp. infecting the gills of the estuarine species of great socioeconomic importance Pellona castelnaeana from the district of Mosqueiro, Belém, Pará, Brazilian Amazon. Thirty specimens captured in the Cajueiro

This paper provides histological and ultrastructural data on Myxobolus mugchelo (Myxozoa), a parasite of the intestinal wall of thinlip mullet Liza ramada from the Comacchio lagoons (Northern Adriatic Sea, Italy). About 80% of the examined mullets were infected with this myxozoan. In histological sections, the plasmodia appeared rounded to ovoid and spindle shaped, measured 181.61 ± 97 × 122.79 ± 53.16 μm (mean ± standard deviation, SD) in size. Early sporogenic plasmodia were located primarily in the muscle layer where no pronounced inflammatory response was detected. Plasmodia containing mat

During a five-year survey including studies on the parasite fauna of bream (Abramis brama), four gill-parasitic Myxobolus species (M. bramae, M. hungaricus, M. impressus and M. macrocapsularis) were recorded in a total of 313 breams from Lake Balaton. The commonest species, M. bramae showed a prevalence of 33%, while the other species occurred sporadically. Myxobolus bramae and M. macrocapsularis infected the tips of the gill filaments and caused both intralamellar and interlamellar infection. Intralamellar plasmodia of small size developed in the capillary network of the gill lamellae whereas

The American pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus, was introduced to Europe more than one hundred years ago. Currently it is a common fish in European freshwaters but relatively few specific parasites infect this fish in this new habitat. In Europe only a single species, Myxobolus dechtiari seems to represent the American myxosporean fauna of centrarchid fishes. M. dechtiari was found in both Portugal and Hungary. This species forms plasmodia with elongated shape inside the cartilaginous rays of gill filaments. In the advanced stage of infection, after disruption of plasmodia, small groups of myxospor
