The Iberian Peninsula provides a unique freshwater ecosystem for native and endemic cypriniforms to thrive. Despite cypriniforms being hosts to multiple myxobolids worldwide, little research has been performed in this geographic location. In this study, the examination of three Iberian endemic cypriniforms showed that myxosporean richness in the Iberian Peninsula is underestimated, with three new and one known myxobolid species being reported based on morphological and molecular data (SSU). Myxobolus arcasii n. sp. is described from the kidney and gonads of the "bermejuela" Achondrostoma arcas

Myxosporean parasites have been understudied in Korea, with only a few species described in marine environments. This study aimed to identify and characterize a new Ceratomyxa species associated with emaciation in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) farmed in Jeju Island, Korea. Morphological analysis revealed that the isolate had spores with an average length of 10.8 ± 1.0 μm and thickness of 41.9 ± 7.4 μm, characterized by two subspherical polar capsules (4.0 μm). The specimens morphologically resembled C. protopsettae Fujita, 1923, but were differentiated from it by their smaller spore

PURPOSE: The Myxozoa class is characterized by parasites that have valves joined by a suture line and polar capsules containing eversible spiral filamento and this class is considered an obligate parasite. The genus Ceratomyxa has approximately 300 species described in fish, both marine and freshwater fish, mainly infecting the gallbladder, but also occurring in the urinary bladder. This study describes a new species of Ceratomyxa in the Amazon region for Pimelodella cristata.
METHODS: For these analyses, the fish were desensitized by means of a medullary section with the aid of a sharp metal

The enteric myxozoan parasites Enteromyxum leei (Diamant, Lom et Dyková) and Enteromyxum scophthalmi Palenzuela, Redondo et Álvarez-Pellitero are responsible for high weight loss in infected fish, which leads to subchronic disease and low mortality rates in gilthead sea bream (GSB), Sparus aurata L., and to high mortality rates in turbot, Psetta maxima (L.). The detection of initial parasite stages in histological sections is particularly difficult, but can be simplified by means of specific antibodies. Rabbit polyclonal antibodies (pAbs) were raised against E. scophthalmi and E. leei, and dir

During an investigation of Myxobolus diversity in the Chinese longsnout catfish Tachysurus dumerili (Bleeker), a new species infecting the intracranial epidermis of the host was discovered. Upon opening the cranial cavity, several round whitish plasmodia measuring 0.55-0.80 mm in diameter were observed. Fresh spores (n= 50) were pyriform in the frontal view and fusiform in the sutural view, with a length of 15.4±0.6 (13.9-16.5) μm, width of 9.1±0.4 (8.3-9.8) μm, and thickness of 7.0±0.4 (6.3-7.9) μm. The spores had smooth shell surfaces and transparent membrane sheaths in the posterior. No fol

Enteromyxoses are relevant diseases for turbot and gilthead sea bream aquaculture. The myxozoan parasites invade the intestinal mucosa, causing a cachectic syndrome associated with intestinal barrier alteration; nonetheless, their pathological impact is different. Turbot infected by Enteromyxum scophthalmi develop more severe intestinal lesions, reaching mortality rates of 100%, whereas in E. leei-infected gilthead sea bream, the disease progresses slowly, and mortality rates are lower. The mechanisms underlying the different pathogenesis are still unclear. We studied the distribution and expr

Myxobolus taibaiensis sp. n. was found in the inner intestinal wall of common carp, Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, during the investigation of fish parasite fauna in Lake Taibai, located in the middle reach of the Yangtze River, China. The whitish ellipsoidal plasmodia, up to 2.9 mm long and 1.7 mm wide, developed in the circular muscle layer of the intestinal wall and produced significant compression into adjacent tissues, but no significant inflammatory responses were observed against this infection. Mature spores are oval in frontal view and lemon-like in lateral and apical view, averaging 10.2-

SUMMARY The cellular mucosal and systemic effectors of gilthead sea bream (GSB) (Sparus aurata) involved in the acute immune response to the intestinal parasite Enteromyxum leei were studied in fish experimentally infected by the anal route. In the intestinal inflammatory infiltrates and in lymphohaematopoietic organs (head kidney and spleen) of parasitized fish, the number of plasma cells, B cells (IgM immunoreactive) and mast cells (histamine immunoreactive) were significantly higher, whereas the number of acidophilic granulocytes (G7 immunoreactive) decreased, compared with non-parasitized

The innate and adaptive immune responses against Enteromyxum scophthalmi was studied in turbot (Scopthalmus maximus (L.)) experimentally exposed to the parasite by cohabitation. Haematological, histopathological, cellular and humoral factors were determined in samples taken from control (CTRL) and recipient (RCPT, naïve fish cohabited with donor infected fish) animals at 0, 20, 29, 40 and 43 days post exposure (p.e). Infection was first detected at day 20 p.e. and prevalence reached 100% at 40 days p.e, when first mortalities occurred. A significant reduction in weight and condition factor was

The fish fauna of the basin of the Amazon River is one of most diverse of any region on Earth and hosts a parasite fauna that is poorly studied. One group of fish parasites is the Myxosporea, a class of the phylum Cnidaria, which are obligate endoparasites. The present study investigated myxozoans found in specimens of the Neotropical catfish Ageneiosus inermis collected in Marajó Bay, off Humaitá Beach. A total of 25 A. inermis specimens were captured and anaesthetised for necropsy, including the gallbladder, liver and muscle tissue, which were prepared for light microscopy, molecular biology
