Protective Effect of a Highly Enriched Nacre-Derived Neutral Polysaccharide Fraction on D-Galactose-Induced Pancreatic Dysfunction.

Nacre, the iridescent inner layer of mollusk shells, has long been traditionally used in medicine. While we have previously demonstrated its anti-aging effects on muscle and skin, its impact on pancreatic dysfunction and glucose metabolism remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to isolate and identify an active component from nacre extract that improves glucose metabolism and to evaluate its potential to prevent or ameliorate pancreatic dysfunction and glucose metabolic abnormalities in a D-galactose-induced aging mouse model. A polysaccharide component was successfully isolated using a comb

Nacre-Mimetic Green Flame Retardant: Ultra-High Nanofiller Content, Thin Nanocomposite as an Effective Flame Retardant.

A nacre-mimetic brick-and-mortar structure was used to develop a new flame-retardant technology. A second biomimetic approach was utilized to develop a non-flammable elastomeric benzoxazine for use as a polymer matrix that effectively adheres to the hydrophilic laponite nanofiller. A combination of laponite and benzoxazine is used to apply an ultra-high nanofiller content, thin nanocomposite coating on a polyurethane foam. The technology used is made environmentally friendly by eliminating the need to add any undesirable flame retardants, such as phosphorus additives or halogenated compounds.

Nano-Pearl Powder and Nacre-Derived Water-Soluble Matrix in Osteogenesis: Evidence, Mechanistic Gaps, and Safety Considerations.

Pearl powder, nacre, and nacre-derived water-soluble matrix (WSM) are natural mineral-organic materials with growing relevance for bone-regenerative research. Their biological activity appears to depend not only on calcium carbonate content but also on soluble matrix components that can influence osteoblast behavior, mineral deposition, and cellular stress responses. This narrative review compares pearl-specific osteogenic studies in cell, scaffold, and defect-repair models with selected comparator nanoparticle studies used to frame unresolved safety questions. The pearl-specific literature ge

The effect of nacre extract on cord blood-derived endothelial progenitor cells: A natural stimulus to promote angiogenesis?

Angiogenesis is a critical parameter to consider for the development of tissue-engineered bone substitutes. The challenge is to promote sufficient vascularization in the bone substitute to prevent cell death and to allow its efficient integration. The capacity of nacre extract to restore the osteogenic activity of osteoarthritis osteoblasts has already been demonstrated. However, their angiogenic potential on endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) was not yet explored. Therefore, the current study aimed at investigating if nacreous molecules affect EPC behavior. The gene and protein expression le

Study on the Effect of Soft-Hard Material Interface Differences on Crack Deflection in Nacre-Inspired Brick-and-Mortar Structures.

Nacre has excellent balanced strength and toughness. In this paper, the mechanical performance of the typical "brick-and-mortar" structure, including the stress-strain and strain at the interface as well as the stress in the bricks, was calculated by a simplified analytical model of the nacre. This paper proposes a new method to control the crack deflection based on the toughening mechanism of the nacre. The crack extension of the "brick-and-mortar" structure was simulated using cohesive elements based on the traction-separation law with elastic and softening stiffness as variables, and it was

Nacre extract attenuates age-related functional and tissue alterations under post-onset intervention conditions in two murine aging models.

Aging is accompanied by the accumulation of senescent cells and chronic low-grade inflammation, which together contribute to functional decline and tissue remodeling across organs. We previously reported that long-term nacre extract supplementation can delay age-related deterioration when initiated early; however, whether it can provide benefit under post-onset intervention conditions remains unclear. Here, we evaluated a water-soluble nacre extract derived from Pinctada fucata using (i) senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8) mice and (ii) a D-galactose-induced aging paradigm, with treat

A Nacre-Mimetic Mullite Nanofiber Aerogel Paper Achieving High-Voltage Electrical and Thermal Insulation via Self-Templated Assembly.

Simultaneously achieving high-voltage electrical insulation and high-temperature tolerance in a single lightweight material remains a formidable challenge due to the intrinsic conflict between dielectric strength and thermal stability. Here, we solve this problem by constructing a flexible, nacre-mimetic mullite nanofiber aerogel paper through a self-templated electrospinning strategy. In this design, functionalized mica nanosheets serve as dielectric barriers uniformly embedded within a mullite nanofiber framework, forming a brick-and-mortar architecture. This structure not only creates an ex

Neuroprotective Effect of Marine-Derived Nacre Extract against Aβ-Induced Toxicity via Preservation of Mitochondrial Function and Biogenesis.

Pearls, formed from the nacreous layers of marine mollusks, have long been used in traditional medicine, yet the molecular basis of their bioactivity remains insufficiently characterized. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a central feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology and represents a critical therapeutic target. Although nacre extract has been reported to improve cognitive impairment, its effects on mitochondrial function and biogenesis under amyloid-β (Aβ)-induced toxicity remain unclear. In this study, we examined the impact of nacre extract on mitochondrial activity in PC12 cells and i

Enhancement of Anti-Melanogenic Activity of Pinctada martensii Nacre-Derived Peptide Through C-Terminal Amidation: Mechanism Investigation in B16F10 Cells.

Excessive melanin accumulation induced by UV exposure and hormonal changes poses significant challenges to skin health, necessitating safe and effective tyrosinase inhibitors. Pearl and nacre powder have long been utilized in traditional Chinese medicine for skin whitening. Our previous study identified a tyrosinase inhibitory peptide (Ala-His-Tyr-Tyr-Asp) from Pinctada martensii nacre in silico; however, chemical modification strategies for enhancing bioactive peptide efficacy remain underexplored. The present study investigated the structure-activity relationship of NP-TIP-1 (Tyrosinase Inhi

Artificial nacre based on polydopamine functionalized graphene oxide nanosheets constrained palladium nanocluster with enhanced mechanical properties and catalytical functionalities.

Inspired by "the composition of catechol and amine groups in the adhesive proteins" of marine mussel and "brick-and-mortar" structure of nacre, we use polydopamine (PDA) as "mortar", graphene oxides (GO) nanosheets as "brick", and Pd2+ ions as interfacial reinforcer, to fabricate nacre-like Pd2+ enhanced PDA functionalized GO membranes (Pd@PDA/GO) with vacuum filtration-assisted assembly method. Meanwhile, in situ reduced Pd0 nanoclusters by PDA chains were well constrained within the resultant Pd@PDA/GO artificial nacre composites. Good interfacial adhesion with dense packing of the GO nanosh

Nacre-Inspired MXene Nanocomposite-based Strain Sensor with Ultrahigh Sensitivity in a Small Strain Range for Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis.

Nowadays, chronic diseases are the primary threat to public health and are getting younger. By taking the advantages of continuousness, convenience, and real-time response, wearable strain sensors have been given great attention to diagnose chronic diseases via analyzing the patient's health state. However, most physiological signals, such as limb tremor of Parkinson's disease, microexpression, and slight joint movement, are tiny and difficult to be detected. Therefore, the development of strain sensors characterized with ultrahigh sensitivity in a small strain range (ε < 10%) is urgent. Inspi

Nacre-like structural carboxymethyl cellulose dual-layered film with a combination of high strength, elongation, and UV-blocking for food packaging.

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) holds great potential for food preservation applications, provided its mechanical properties and UV-blocking performance are significantly enhanced. Considering this, the study focuses on developing a novel dual-layered film using the layer-by-layer casting method. The resulting film exhibits a compact dual-layered structure, with a nacre-like upper layer (chitosan/montmorillonite/tea polyphenols) and a dense bottom layer (CMC/sodium alginate/nano-hydroxyapatite/tea polyphenols). This design enhances tensile strength through hydrogen bonding interactions among nan

Mussel- and nacre-inspired dual-bionic alginate-based hydrogel coating with multi-matrix applicability, high separation stability and antifouling performance for oil/water separation.

Natural hydrogel-modified porous matrices with superwetting interfaces are ideal for oil/water separation. In this study, inspired by two marine organisms, a novel hydrogel coating with multi-matrix suitability, high oil/water separation capability and antifouling properties was developed. Specifically, inspired by mussel byssus, hydrogel coating was successfully deposited on porous matrix surface based on the introduction of tannic acid (TA). Moreover, inspired by the "brick and mortar" microstructure of Pinctada nacre, silica particles were in-situ synthesized in the sodium alginate (SA)/Ca2

Long-Term Dietary Supplementation with Pearl Oyster Shell-Derived Nacre Extract Improves Cognitive Performance and Attenuates Alzheimer's Disease-Like Pathology in APPNL-G-F/NL-G-F Knock-In Mice.

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by cognitive decline, amyloid-β deposition, tau-related pathology, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. Pearl oyster shell-derived nacre extract is used in dietary supplement-related applications, but evidence from animal models should be interpreted cautiously and its effects on Alzheimer's disease-like pathology remain incompletely defined. To evaluate whether long-term oral dietary supplementation with nacre extract is associated with changes in cognitive performance and Alzheimer's disease-like pathological features in APPNL-G-F/NL-G-F knock-in mice

Expression, correlation and prognostic significance of CD133, P57 and HSF1 in meningioma.

Mass mortality of 0-year-old pearl oysters, Pinctada fucata (Gould), and anomalies in adults were observed in Japan's major pearl farming areas in the summer of 2019 and 2020. Although adult oyster mortality was low, both adult and juvenile oysters underwent atrophy of the soft body, detachment of the mantle from nacre (the shiny inner surface of the valves), deposition of brownish material on the nacre, and loss of nacre luster. Infection trials were conducted to verify the involvement of pathogens in this phenomenon. Healthy adult pearl oysters were obtained from areas where this disease had

Bioinspired, Graphene/Al2O3 Doubly Reinforced Aluminum Composites with High Strength and Toughness.

Nacre, commonly referred to as nature's armor, has served as a blueprint for engineering stronger and tougher bioinspired materials. Nature organizes a brick-and-mortar-like architecture in nacre, with hard bricks of aragonite sandwiched with soft biopolymer layers. However, cloning nacre's entire reinforcing mechanisms in engineered materials remains a challenge. In this study, we employed hybrid graphene/Al2O3 platelets with surface nanointerlocks as hard bricks for primary load bearer and mechanical interlocking, along with aluminum laminates as soft mortar for load distribution and energy

Single-cell transcriptomics reveals cellular heterogeneity and neoadjuvant chemotherapy response signatures in triple-negative breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) shows marked intratumoral heterogeneity and variable responses to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), but the cellular determinants of treatment response remain incompletely defined. METHODS: We analyzed the scRNA-seq dataset GSE161529 to characterize TNBC cellular states and used bulk cohorts, including GSE25066 and GSE58812, for NAC response-related signature evaluation and clinical validation. Cell types and subtypes were identified by t-SNE clustering. A permutation-based NACR score estimated chemotherapy-response potential. Differentiation hie
