This work reports on the synthesis of nanoassemblies of supramolecular hybrids containing detonated nanodiamonds (DNDs) covalently linked to halogenated BODIPY (DNDs-BODIPY) by an amide bond, followed by π-π stacking of 2,9,16,23-tetrakis[4-(N-methylpyridyloxy)]-phthalocyanine (ZnTPPcQ) on the DNDs-BODIPY conjugate, to form nanoassembly represented as ZnTPPcQ-DNDs-BODIPY. ZnTPPcQ-DNDs-BODIPY has a higher singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.50 in water. Therefore, the construction of a three component photodynamic therapy agent (ZnTPPcQ-DNDs-BODIPY) as a single photosentisiser improved singlet qu

It is highly desirable to develop a therapeutic, observable nanoparticle complex for specific targeting in cancer therapy. Growth hormone (GH) and its antagonists have been explored as cancer cell-targeting molecules for both imaging and therapeutic applications. In this study, a low toxicity, biocompatible, therapeutic, and observable GH-nanoparticle complex for specifically targeting growth hormone receptor (GHR) in cancer cells was synthesized by conjugating GH with green fluorescence protein and carboxylated nanodiamond. Moreover, we have shown that this complex can be triggered by laser i

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are widely used in biomedical applications due to their unique magnetic and physicochemical properties. Surface stabilization and functionalization further expand their applicability in biological environments and help overcome the challenges of achieving targeted therapy. Here, nanodiamonds (NDs) decorated with SPIONs were developed for a dual therapy approach combining magnetic and optical properties: NDs offer excellent properties for optical imaging while SPIONs serve as effective contrast agents. In the present study, amino-PEGylated SPI

Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). Drug-resistant TB remains a major public health challenge and calls for new approaches to drug development. Targeted delivery of antibacterial agents using nanoscale carriers represents one such approach. A decisive factor for efficient targeting is the judicious selection of the carrier platform. Methods: In the present study, diamond nanoparticles were evaluated as a prospective vehicle for conveying anti-TB drugs to lung cells. Conventional and analytical transmission ele

The increasing resistance of bacteria and fungi to antibiotics is one of the health threats facing humanity. Of great importance is the development of new antibacterial agents or alternative approaches to reduce bacterial resistance to available antibacterial drugs. Due to the complexity of their properties, carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) may be of interest for a number of biomedical applications. One of the problems in studying the action of CNMs on microorganisms is the lack of universally standardized methods and criteria for assessing antibacterial and antifungal activity. In this work, using

Nanodiamonds (NDs) are a class of carbon nanomaterials with sizes ranging from a few nm to micrometres. Due to their excellent physical, chemical and optical properties, they have recently attracted much attention in biomedicine. In addition, their exceptional biocompatibility and the possibility of precise surface functionalisation offer promising opportunities for biological applications such as cell labelling and imaging, as well as targeted drug delivery. However, using NDs for selective targeting of desired biomolecules within a complex biological system remains challenging. Urinary bladd

Water radiolysis involves chemical decomposition of the water molecule into free radicals after exposure to ionizing radiation. These free radicals have deleterious effects on normal cell physiology. Carboxylated nanodiamonds (cNDs) appear to modulate the deleterious effects of γ-irradiation on the pathophysiology of red blood cells (RBCs). In the present work, the antioxidant activity of hydrated cNDs (h-cNDs) on limiting oxidative damage (the water radiolysis effect) by γ-irradiation was confirmed. Our results show that h-cNDs have remarkable free radical scavenging ability and preserve the

Detonation nanodiamonds (DND) emerge as versatile nano building blocks for next generation biosensing, owing to their exceptional physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. In this study, a robust label-free electrochemical immunosensor for cortisol detection is based on screen printed carbon electrodes (SPE) modified with pristine DND. By utilizing EDC/NHS, efficient covalent crosslinking and stable antibody immobilization is achieved, as shown by comprehensive morphological and spectroscopic characterization (AFM, SEM, Raman, FTIR). Electrochemical analyses demonstrate that the DND int

Nanodiamond (ND) is an attractive class of nanomaterial for fluorescent labeling, magnetic sensing of biological molecules, and targeted drug delivery. Many of those applications require tethering of target biological molecules on the ND surface. Even though many approaches have been developed to attach macromolecules to the ND surface, it remains challenging to characterize dynamics of tethered molecule. Here, we show high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (HF EPR) spectroscopy of nitroxide-functionalized NDs. Nitroxide radical is a commonly used spin label to investigate dynamics of

With the increasing development of nanomaterials, the use of nanodiamonds (NDs) has been broadly manifested in many applications. However, their high penetration into the ecosystem indubitably poses remarkable toxicological risks. This paper investigates the toxic effects of NDs on the darkling beetle, Blaps polychresta Forskal, 1775 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Survival analysis was carried out by monitoring the beetles for 30 d after the injection of four different doses of NDs. A dose of 10.0 mg NDs/g body weight, causing less than 50% mortality effect, was assigned in the analysis of the d

The present work is focused on testing enzyme-based agents for the partial dissolution of calcium pyrophosphate (CaPPi) deposits in the cartilages and synovial fluid of patients with pyrophosphate arthropathy (CPPD disease). Previously, we suggested that inorganic pyrophosphatases (PPases) immobilized on nanodiamonds of detonation synthesis (NDs) could be appropriate for this purpose. We synthesized and characterized conjugates of NDs and PPases from Escherichia coli and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The conjugates showed high enzymatic activity and resistance to inhibition by calcium and fluori

Fluorescent nanodiamond (FND) has excellent biocompatibility and photostability, making it well suited for long-term labeling and tracking of cancer and stem cells. To prove the concept, the exocytosis of FND particles (size ≈100 nm) from three cell lines--HeLa cervical cancer cells, 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes, and 489-2.1 multipotent stromal cells--is studied in detail. FND labeling is performed by incubating the cells in a serum-free medium containing 80 μg mL(-1) FND for 4 h. No significant alteration in growth or proliferation of the FND-labeled cells, including the multipotent stromal cells, i

Hyperthermia plays a significant role in cancer treatment by inducing cell damage through temperature elevation, often used alongside other treatment modalities. During hyperthermia therapy, temperature control is crucial. Here, we report on a simple synthesis route of hybrid plasmonic nanodiamonds either completely wrapped with an Au shell (NV@Au) or densely covered with Au NPs (NV@SiO 2 @Au). Such integration of nanodiamonds with Au NPs is advantageous both for heating and precise thermometry at nanoscale. After structural and optical investigations, heating abilities of the obtained plasmon

Nanodiamonds (NDs) combine the exceptional hardness, chemical durability, and thermal stability of bulk diamond with a high surface-to-volume ratio and widely tunable surface chemistry. These properties enable broad control over surface charge, polarity, hydration, and interfacial interactions, making NDs attractive for adsorption and water-treatment applications. Nevertheless, their practical potential in these fields remains substantially underdeveloped relative to the depth of accumulated physicochemical knowledge. This review critically examines known and filtration-relevant interactions b

Ultrasmall nanodiamonds (USNDs) are promising platforms for fluorescent and quantum-sensing applications. Here we present first-principles electronic structure calculations of nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) centers in USNDs, and we investigate their optical addressability as a function of the surface termination. We consider both isolated nanoparticles and arrays of USNDs with different degrees of packing, and we include quantum vibronic effects in our analysis, using stochastic methods. We find that the NV- can be stabilized in a negative charge state if the nanoparticles are terminated by fluorine,

Nanodiamonds (NDs) display several attractive features rendering them useful for medical applications such as drug delivery. However, the interactions between NDs and the immune system remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated amino-, carboxyl-, and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-terminated NDs with respect to primary human immune cells. We applied cytometry by time-of-flight (CyToF) to assess the impact on peripheral blood mononuclear cells at the single-cell level, and observed an expansion of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) which are critically involved in antiviral responses. The development of collagen-based composite materials offers new opportunities for designing bioactive porous structures with tunable properties. This study focuses on sponges or scaffolds fabricated from fish skin-derived tropocollagen combined with detonation nanodiamonds (NDs), aiming to explore how incorporation of NDs and application of radiation, as a potential sterilization method, influence structural and functional characteristics of the material. Freeze-dry methods of sponge fabrication resulted in a bilayered structure of open porosity, with microporosity at the top and a microchann

Nanodiamond-based thermometry provides a photostable and biocompatible platform for nanoscale temperature sensing in biological environments. Most nanodiamond thermometry approaches rely on continuous-wave optically detected magnetic resonance, which requires microwave delivery and specialized instrumentation. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical alternative based on the temperature dependence of the fluorescence lifetime of nitrogen-vacancy centers in 100 nm nanodiamonds. To evaluate the performance of fluorescence lifetime-based nanodiamond thermometry under biologically relevant conditions,

Directly measuring kinetics within microcompartments is critical for determining the distinct mechanisms that govern chemistry in confined environments. Here, we deploy nanodiamond (ND) particles hosting nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers as quantum sensors to track the transmetalation of gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) in bulk solution and within single levitated, charged microdroplets by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). The appearance of paramagnetic Gd+during the reaction produces changes in the continuously acquired ODMR signature, furnishing an in situ opti
