ConspectusReducing bulk crystals to single-unit chains generally yields unique structures and properties, such as the simplest periodicity, high surface-to-volume ratios, and quantum confinement effects, but their synthesis and stabilization under working conditions remain challenging. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), with well-defined 1-2 nm channels, provide an ideal platform for confined synthesis and studying atomic-scale molecular transport. Additionally, the conductive single-atomic-layer graphene enables the transmission of properties of substances across monolayer graphene, thu

Vivianite widely existed in digested sludge and activated sludge as a potential phosphate resource recovered from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). As an important product of extracellular electron transfer (EET) and biological iron reduction, the production of vivianite can be enhanced by conductive materials. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with excellent electrical conductivity have been reported to promote electron transfer, which was applied in wastewater treatment to accelerate the degradation of the contaminants. However, the impact of CNTs on vivianite formation was barely reported. In this

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a novel synthetic material comprising only carbon atoms. Based on its rigidity, its electrical and heat conductivity and its applicability to surface manufacturing, this material is expected to have numerous applications in industry. However, due to the material's dimensional similarity to asbestos fibers, its carcinogenicity was hypothesized during the last decade, and indeed, we have shown that multi-wall CNTs (MWCNTs) of 50 nm in diameter are potently carcinogenic to mesothelial cells after intraperitoneal injection. Additionally, we suggested that inflammogenici

Due to their particular magnetic properties, nanoparticles of metallic iron are promising candidates for magnetic fluid hyperthermia when compared to the commonly used iron oxides. However, the difficulty of handling these structures in ambient conditions without oxidation hinders its practical application. In this work, iron filled carbon nanotubes non-covalently functionalized by human serum albumin are studied as potential agents for hyperthermia. Here the iron is encapsulated inside of the carbon shells and protected from reactions with its environment. Besides protecting the iron and biol

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been proposed and actively explored as multipurpose innovative carriers for drug delivery and diagnostic applications. Their versatile physicochemical features enable the covalent and noncovalent introduction of several pharmaceutically relevant entities and allow for rational design of novel candidate nanoscale constructs for drug development. CNTs can be functionalized with different functional groups to carry simultaneously several moieties for targeting, imaging, and therapy. Among the most interesting examples of such multimodal CNT constructs described in thi

In this paper we present a simple approach of nanodispersing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in a non-polar 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) solvent. After filtration with isopropanol and acetone, the purified SWCNTs were immersed in DCE, followed by sonication for about 15 hours. The samples were further centrifuged at 17,000 revolutions per minute for about 3 hours. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) demonstrated that the spin-coated nanotubes were mostly individual nanotubes with an average diameter of 1.6 nm and a length of about 250 nm. We also found that the presence of water, and the dry pro

Nitrogen-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ND-MWCNTs) are modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with enhanced electrical properties that are used in a variety of applications, including fuel cells and sensors; however, the mode of toxic action of ND-MWCNT has yet to be fully elucidated. In the present study, we compared the interaction of ND-MWCNT or pristine MWCNT-7 with human small airway epithelial cells (SAEC) and evaluated their subsequent bioactive effects. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction suggested

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a devastating complication of orthopedic implant surgeries, such as total knee and hip arthroplasties. Treatment requires additional surgeries because antibiotics have limited efficacy due to biofilm formation and resistant bacterial strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A non-pharmaceutical approach is needed, and examples of this are found in nature; dragonfly and cicada wings are antibacterial because of their nanopillar surface structure rather than their chemistry. Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube (CICNT) surfaces exh

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are important materials for electronics and structural composites, but their production still relies on hydrocarbon-based chemical vapor deposition, an energy-intensive and fossil-dependent process, limited by rapid catalyst deactivation. Using CO2 as a carbon feedstock offers a sustainable route for CNT synthesis, yet direct CO2 conversion to CNTs is thermodynamically unfavorable and existing CO2-to-carbon pathways mainly yield amorphous or weakly graphitized solids. Here, we demonstrate a tandem electrochemical-thermochemical (EC-TC) strategy that overcomes these limi

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized via the decomposition of CCl4 in supercritical CO2 at 175 degrees C and 27.6 MPa using an iron-encapsulated dendrimer as a growth catalyst. The average diameter of resultant nanotubes was 20-25 nm, obtained after a 24-h reaction time. Our conditions represent the first application for CX4 precursors, as well as the lowest-reported temperature regime for carbon nanotube growth, allowing the use of other temperature-sensitive catalytic substrates.

Carboxylated functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNT) were synthesised. Furthermore, folic acid (FA) and methotrexate (MTX) through ethylenediamine (ED) were attached to the surface of f-MWCNT to synthesise MWCNT-ED-FA and MWCNT-ED-MTX. Release studies of MTX as free drug and in MWCNT-ED-MTX were performed. These studies showed that MTX release rate from MWCNT-ED-MTX decreased in comparison with free MTX, which is due to the MTX attachment on the MWCNT. The anticancer effect of MWCNT-ED-FA and MWCNT-ED-MTX on the breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) was studied. Studies have shown tha

Desalination based on carbon nanomembranes offers high water permeance and salt rejection, making them promising for addressing global freshwater shortages and energy demands in reverse osmosis (RO) desalination. Enhancing ion rejection by modulating the energy barrier for ion transport through wide carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a critical challenge for highly efficient desalination. We perform molecular dynamics simulations on water desalination using CNTs membranes, highlighting the key role of nanoconfinement coupled with an electric field. The results show that the electric field extends the

Terahertz (THz) radiation provides an effective means to probe and manipulate collective molecular dynamics in confined water. In this work, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate the frequency-dependent thermal response and microscopic structure of water confined in armchair-type double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). Water encapsulated in (3, 3)@(13, 13), (3, 3)@(18, 18), and (3, 3)@(23, 23) DWCNTs is subjected to linearly polarized THz electric fields applied either parallel or perpendicular to the nanotube axis, and the resulting temperature jump, ΔT, i

Chiral molecular recognition is typically achieved through static complementarity between chiral hosts and molecular guests. Dynamic control of such recognition through external stimuli remains an important challenge, particularly for interactions involving extended solid surfaces. Here we show that solvent chirality can act as an external control parameter that modulates the conformation of polysaccharide dispersants and thereby creates a tunable chiral recognition field for one-dimensional nanomaterials. By continuously varying the enantiomeric excess of chiral solvents, the conformation of

Global concern about Alzheimer's disease (AD) is justified by its increasingly younger onset and significant economic burden. AD leads to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline, ultimately resulting in loss of autonomy. Against this background, the field of biomedical research has seen a surge of interest in the potential of carbon-based nanomaterials, mainly due to their ease of degradation and high biocompatibility. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been extensively studied in AD, including developing biosensors, drug delivery systems, and molecular imaging. Here, we introduced the biosafety and

Telomere shortening can result in cellular senescence and in increased level of genome instability, which are key events in numerous of cancer types. Despite this, few studies have focused on the effect of nanomaterial exposure on telomere length as a possible mechanism involved in nanomaterial-induced carcinogenesis. In this study, effects of exposure to multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on telomere length were investigated in mice exposed by intrapleural injection, as well as in human lung epithelial and mesothelial cell lines. In addition, cell cycle, apoptosis, and regulation of genes i

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are fibrous carbon-based nanomaterials with a potential to cause carcinogenesis in humans. Alterations in DNA methylation on cytosine-phosphate-guanidine (CpG) sites are potential markers of exposure-induced carcinogenesis. This study examined cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and DNA methylation alterations on human monocytic cells (THP-1) after incubation with single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) and multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs). Higher cytotoxicity and genotoxicity were observed after incubation with SWCNTs than incubation with MWCNTs. At the selected concentrations (25 and 100 µg/ml)

Here we report the fabrication and characterization of pH sensors using aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The SWNTs are dispersed in deionized (DI) water after chemical functionalization and filtration. They are deposited and organized on silicon substrates with the dielectrophoresis process. Electrodes with "teeth"-like patterns-fabricated with photolithography and wet etching-are used to generate concentrated electric fields and strong dielectrophoretic forces for the SWNTs to deposit and align in desired locations. The device fabrication is inexpensive, solution-based, and con
