Twenty male volunteers were exposed to 95 ppm trichloroethylene for 4 h. Immediately before and aftere xposure and 4 h and 20 h after cessation, some serum-enzymes, the cytoenzymological activity of the alkaline and acid phosphatases and the naphthol-AS-D-esterase in neutrophil granulocytes and the acid-base equilibrium were investigated. Compared with the control experiment, the activities of the three neutrophil enzymes increased during trichloroethylene exposure with high significance. No significant changes of the serum-enzymes and the acid-base equilibrium could be found.

Two cytochemical methods for detection of granulocytic elastase and chymotrypsin employing alanine and phenylalanine naphthyl esters were developed. The alpha naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) cytochemical staining patterns were examined in 40 cases of acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML: FAB groups M1 and M2) classified by morphological and immunological criteria. The authors have used histochemical techniques to identify lymphocytic infiltrations in the rheumatoid nodule. They used the technique of alpha-naphtyl-acetate esterase (ANAE) for macrophages, ANAE plus Sodium Fluoride (NaF) for T-lymphocytes and 5-nucleotidase for B-lymphocytes. The results of this study reveal that the lymphocytic component of the rheumatoid nodule is mostly B-lymphocytes.

Epidermal dendritic cells showing a diffuse activity of acid nonspecific esterase were observed in three cases of mycosis fungoides stage I. As these cells by their appearance and localization resemble Langerhans cells, and dermal histiocytes and macrophages react in the same manner, this is another enzyme cytochemical suggestion of a relationship between Langerhans cells and the monocyte-macrophage-system.

DNA content of mycosis infiltrate cells was measured in 5 patients with the Feulgen cytophotometric method in the plaque and tumor stages.
